The majority of sales of two-letter .COM's that we have covered on the NamePros Blog have been acquired by Chinese investors or companies. China has been one of the big trends in domaining, but one of the most recent is cryptocurrency.
This year has seen many high value sales including the reported $12 million deal for Crypto.com, but the latest big deal looks to be for the two-letter .COM domain CT.com. Thanks to DomainIQ's monitoring tools, we were able to spot the movement of this domain earlier today.
According to DomainIQ, the name moved from MarkMonitor to GoDaddy under privacy protection, switching nameservers in the process. Up until recently, the two-letter name was owned by Tribune Media and displayed a web page for The CW Television Network. From research, it looks as though it was specifically the Connecticut-based WCCT-TV.
Although the domain has moved under privacy protection to GoDaddy, it's highly likely that the buyers are Cointelegraph since the name immediately started forwarding to that website. Founded in 2013, Cointelegraph boasts a strong global team that provides independent coverage of cryptocurrency, blockchain and decentralized applications. Cointelegraph.com currently has an Alexa ranking of 3,360.
The price of this transaction is currently unknown, although we have reached out to representatives of both Cointelegraph and Tribune Media for comment. It looks as though MediaOptions was brokering the sale of this name in 2017 after it appeared on several newsletters, with the price on February 16th 2017 quoted at $1.3 million.
