I think some in the Democrat party want to be more like the Nordic countries, I think they're calling it Compassionate Capitalism. I understand those on the right wanting to use something like a Venezuela instead.

This:
"The Nordic countries don’t actually do much of those things. Yes, they offer government-paid healthcare, in some cases tuition-free university educations, and rather generous social safety nets, all financed with high taxes. However, it is possible to do these things without interfering in the private sector more than required."

Sounds a lot like what some Dems are wanting.

Even some of the slings towards Bernie was that he owned multiples houses. Again, sounds more like the Nordic setup.

Employment numbers are still going up.

That's great. Of course during the recession it usually goes up, went up to 10% last time. And has nothing to do with what was being talked about.

wanted to add. We have people here that live in countries with Universal Health Care, let's just ask them. Do you like it? What's good, what's bad etc.

Somebody ask Gilsan:

"Does Portugal have universal health care?
The SNS is characterized as being national, universal, general and free. It is national as it should be provided nationwide, although presently it still only covers Continental Portugal. It is universal as all Portuguese citizens and foreign residents have access to it."

Would he give that up in favor of a U.S. type system?

Bernie Sanders and Bloomberg disagree. It would be hard for them to institutionalize their plans but that doesn't mean they don't want to control the economy or how much money people are paid.

As a matter of fact, they're pretty up front about it.

Not much of your post made sense.

Again, the stuff they want sounds like the Nordic type, you didn't post anything saying otherwise. Universal healthcare, some wanting free college, same stuff.

"Those questions were answered in the video, and Uncle Bernie's favorite girl AOC."

? They live in America, not other countries. I said:

"We have people here that live in countries with Universal Health Care, let's just ask them. Do you like it? What's good, what's bad etc."

Other people in this thread. Simply ask Gilsan, I folded him awhile back so he's not reading my posts. You ask him, how does he like the system in Portugal. What does he like, dislike etc. Get real input, no need to guess.

And the Nordic, they seem to be doing quite well. Even with all that stuff being paid for, still healthy economy.

Bernie and Ortez want to control:

Housing
Health care - Bernie's plan make it illegal to offer private insurance. Only supplemental coverage is allowed.
Education
Wages

How do you run a market economy like that?

I said more like the Nordic countries. Cortez is just a district - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York's_14th_congressional_district

How do you run a market economy like that?

How does Norway do it? Seems well, people that live there, seem to like it.

It's why I want to ask people that actually live in those countries. Me and you don't need to guess at this.

How does Norway do it?

She's a "democratic socialist" running for a seat in the Senate. It's party platform. She'll probably be elected.

Not sure how Norway does it. They have oil revenue to offset the cost. Not sure how much of their economy has been nationalized.

Also, they have a small population.

Honestly don't know how Norway does it. They have oil revenue to offset the cost. Not sure how much of their economy has been nationalized.

I'm open to the health care issue tho. I think we should examine other countries and see what's working.

Let's start with Gilsan, I can't ask him. Can you? Let's just get input from people outside the U.S.

Anybody on this forum living in Norway, some other Nordic country? What's good, what's not?

Universal Health Care in Portugal used to be free, but 5 years ago, due to the crisis we have to pay a little, when going to hospital or government health centers. Just like the rest of Europe we have to pay higher taxes to get this benefit. Everyone is covered.

What happens here is sometimes you need to wait many months or even a year or more to have an operation. As an example a few years ago I was put on a waiting list of about 1.5 years for a cataract operation.

I opted to go to a private clinic, paid about €2.200 Euros and 3 days later had the operation.

However, if you have any health emergency or accident, you are attended right away.

As an example, about 14 years ago I had a heart attack and was immediately very well attended, spent about a week in hospital and didn't pay a cent.

The richer countries in Europe have even better Health Care, but are being strained by the millions of illegals, many of them arriving with various tropical diseases, or rotten teeth and even tourists from Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Asian countries, who soon after arriving seek medical care and then go back to their countries without paying the bill. Many pregnant women especially Nigerians and others from African countries also take advantage by arriving just before giving birth and then returning without paying a cent. The UK is a favorite destination for this rip off.

As a result, the the National Health Service of the UK has gotten worse over the years, thanks to all these foreign fraudsters, filling up hospital beds and forcing British citizens to wait much longer than before...

Jeremy Hunt: Immigrants are 'clogging up' UK hospitals
Immigrants who should not be entitled to free healthcare have “clogged up” hospitals across the country, forcing British people to wait longer for treatment, Jeremy Hunt has claimed.

It started well, but you couldn't resist adding your daily dose of fascist crap.
Doesn't even make any sense, why would an African pay hundreds or thousands to come to Europe, then go back just to benefit from supposedly free health care ? If they have that kind of money, they can get good health care in their home country, or in a neighboring country.
An EU visa is not cheap and not so easy to get, generally you have to show you have a return ticket, insurance, sufficient subsistence means and if you come from certain countries vaccination or a medical check-up may be required.
PS: at your next consultation, you should ask if they have a solution for your rotten brain.

Now, to address the question.
Europe in general has affordable health care AND education, that is even free in some countries.
But Europeans pay higher taxes.
However inequality is rising (a worldwide trend).

The UK has socialized medicine that in my opinion isn't so great. If you have to wait for years for cancer treatment it's not working. If you have money you can go to a private practice but the system is supposed to provide universal care for people, even when they suffer from serious medical conditions or have limited means.

What I find baffling is that the US spends a lot on healthcare too, but the system doesn't seem to very efficient for people. Maybe it works well for the doctors and the industry though.
People in America are highly vulnerable if they start having health issues and do not have good, private, government or corporate coverage.

Another huge problem in America is that students who pursue studies in universities have to run into debt massively. When they start working they already have a 5-figure debt (or more) to pay. More or less slaves for life.

It works for the insurance industry. Costs are crazy especially if it involves a hospital visit. If you look at a hospital bill you’ll see outrageous charges even for simple things like an aspirin.

Insurance premiums are also outrageous, especially if you’re not covered by an employer plan with group rates. Speaking as someone who has been buying coverage privately before and after ACA, ACA wasn’t perfect by any means but it made some improvements by limiting annual and lifetime costs, preventing insurers from dumping people with pre existing conditions, and covering wellness care to keep costs down. Also capping the premium gap percentage between 20 and 60 yr olds and limiting annual premium increases.

Then the current admin wants to get rid of it...personally I think fixing the parts that were lacking would have made more sense, but I’d have no problem with them scrapping it if there were plans to put something improved in its place. But that’s not the case - instead they're chipping away at it to make it collapse. They’re re-allowing cheap short term plans with basically cover nothing. Those were available before ACA - by using them you can be covered for treatment for a sprained ankle or the flu but will quickly run past policy limits if you have a catastrophic illness or accident.

People die because they can’t afford treatment and go bankrupt in this country if they get a serious illness. As a developed country, that’s just not right.

In Africa? That's a joke right? Do you know of anyone from Europe or America going to Africa for an operation or for Medical treatment?

In Malaysia, Singapore, India, yes, but certainly not in Africa.

If poor Africans can pay 2000-4000 Euros to human traffickers to get them on a boat to cross the Mediterranean, then thousands of more affluent Africans can better afford 1000 Euros to go to the UK for a a week or so, get an operation or have their babies with the knowledge that they will get far superior hospital care in the UK than in their countries and with the knowledge that they will get it for FREE!!!

They already know all the "tricks of the trade" before arriving in the UK for freebies...

This is common knowledge among some English people, except for biased Liberals like yourself who refuse to acknowledge the facts.

People in the UK carry no idea or social security cards, unlike other European countries. So it's less obvious whether a patient is eligible for care or not. Hospitals are supposed to check and charge upfront for non-urgent care.
Certainly doesn't work like this in Portugal and elsewhere in Europe, but you know it right ?

rip-off NHS £16million a year makes a good headline for an English ragtag tabloid but national healthcare systems "being strained by the millions of illegals" like you said is untrue.
NHS has a budget of £120+ billions.

You don't even wonder how she ran up such a bill ? It's because the story is more intricate than presented in that tabloid (what a surprise). In fact that woman ended up giving birth in the UK by accident literally.
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-38809530

You have a way of presenting things that is always deceptive and selective on facts.
Of course this is what happens when you are fed with biased reporting all day long and you never question what you read. Train your brains more please.

That's funny, as you just did the same thing you're accusing GILSAN of! Talk about stretching the facts to support a narrative. She was in the U.S. to deliver her crew of babies, and didn't have the right insurance paperwork so the U.S. was sending her home to Nigeria, the medical emergency happened en route to Nigeria so they stopped in the UK. So she was trying to abuse the medical system of the U.S. purposefully and ending up abusing the medical system of the UK accidentally. But I guess it's ok because she was trying to defraud the U.S.? Good Grief Kate!!

From the article:

The woman, who is included in the BBC Two programme Hospital, was due to give birth in the US, where she has family, but had been turned away for not having the right hospital paperwork.

She was taken ill on her flight home to Nigeria and ended up in St Mary's A&E, which covers Heathrow after her flight stopped over at the airport.

Priscilla was three months away from her due date.

She gave birth to one baby who died and she and her three children were all placed in intensive care.

Another of her children died on Saturday and her two surviving children remain in intensive care which costs £20,000 a week per child.

Priscilla was released from hospital after six weeks and is being supported by a charity as she has no family in the UK and admits she has no ability to pay the bill.

She had family in the US - who could possibly support her there, you don't have all the facts (nor do I). What do you know about her insurance or lack thereof ? Be more cautious in your assessments. Just because somebody does not have the right paperwork does not mean they are fraudsters. I was once nearly turned down from a hospital for that exact reason.
Anyway, this case was clearly outside the norm and most unusual, all that to make a point.

Please don't shoot the messenger. I am only digging for truth, something that Gilsan should have done, rather then presenting another deceptive article.
There is a huge gap between the truth and what some people want to believe.

Also, the comments smack of anger and racism, because there is a lot of ordinary citizens abusing the welfare system. Abuse from foreigners is marginal in comparison.

Hmm I wonder if anger displacement qualifies as a medical condition ? I think medicine should be 100% subsidized and distributed handsomely over here :xf.rolleyes:
