information I will never help another domainer

So I have a guy hit me up with an unsolicited direct message asking me to buy a 3 letter domain -he did the same thing months ago with another name and I nicely said no.
He wanted 6 figures months ago and now 50k. It is a nice 3 letter but I am trying to sell Birdsnest.com and pacemakers.com right now so I’m tied up.
The guy keeps messaging me so I decide to help him out and I reach out to my big boy contacts - I try not to bother these guys unless it’s something good and out of my range.
This is on Monday - a holiday where I live. My big guy gives me a number and the seller doesn’t like it. Ok - don’t take it - goodbye. Nope - comes back with another number. I tell him my big guy won’t negotiate- he insists.
At this point I am a broker on this deal! My big guy literally tells me “ tell him to fuck off” and my big guy is in the middle of closing on a house. The buyer knows all this information and keeps pushing. He finally tells me he will take the big guys offer after hours of telling me he has had better offers. I’m shielding my big guy from all this nonsense to help the seller get a deal done - he seems desperate.
I literally tell him that the big guy is buying a house as we speak - he has to agree and then I will give you his email for escrow. I’m not giving out the big guys name or email to anyone or he will disown me.
He keeps pressing me for his address.
It’s a holiday - I’m off work - my wife is complaining because I’m ignoring her and the kids - it was the last 80 degree day in Buffalo for 7 months. The buyer is busy buying a house with his wife out of the country with a time difference.
I finally get the ok from the big boy to give him an address to start escrow. I DM the buyer the address and.......POOF! Not even a thank you. It’s been 2 days and I know Escrow closed - the last message is me giving him an email address and then silence.
I literally spent hours as a go between helping this seller - I had to keep a buffer or the big boy would have told him to kiss his ass and backed out.
I spent my day off helping someone and not even a thanks - if you read this - it’s normally 10% - you’re welcome- that was a big sale - enjoy you sale and money.
Don’t help people-

It is so shameful that this kind of people are in domaining

It happens unfortunatley...some people simply lack the common decency to have basic manners. I've experienced it a few times here as well. Not related to brokering a sale but often I'd get a out the blue DM from someone asking for my opinion on something. I remember some time ago where I actually spent a fair amount of time replying with links and suggetions because the persons initial DM came across as sincere.... after spending probably 30mins or so replying/finding links and pointing him in the right direction, I didn't even get a reply saying thank you or anything... absolutely nothing. I just laughed it off.

Interesting that u are trying to sell pacemakers .com ... I've been trying to sell pacemakers .ca :xf.grin:

It sucks to help someone and not even a thanks. I always thank people that do anything for me.
I have been outbounding that damn name to every major company- 1 said no and the rest are silent- they are reading the emails so you never know

Had I been the seller, one of the first things I would have discussed with you is what you would like in return for your trouble/time...especially if I needed a quick sale for whatever reason.

In another industry I've had the same happen...with someone that had almost made it to friend status. I still help others when I can, but I let them know time is money and I will help them free for a while, but at some point we have to talk about compensation. Maybe the person will come around and offer you something for your effort rather than burn a bridge.

I agree - I should have told him after a couple of hours I need to get paid for this
The big guy is going to give me some back end after he sells it someday. He feels bad the didn’t give anything up on it

A 6 figure ask on a nice 3L.com, with a reprice at $50K, and then an ever lower counter from your buyer sounds like you could have had a lot of buyers in play in the $30-40K range if it was a nice 3L.com.

Did you discuss your commission schedule with the seller during, or prior to closing, they might have had better offers in the past, but market is a bit down right now in this space to some regards, so maybe he thought you were getting it on the buyer end because he was giving you such a good price form his perspective. Tough one for sure.

Yeah, simple manners thats all it takes. I struggle to understand how saying thank you is too much of a challenge for some people.

Strange, I would have expected the .com to get scooped up quickly. I haven't really done much outbound on the .ca version yet. Will try doing some Linkedin outbound on it from next week. Good luck on your end, keep me posted if you managed to get a buyer, I will do the same if I get a buyer for my .ca

Just to clarify

Who were you working for the buyer or the seller?

Did you have a brokerage agreement?

Cheers
Corey

That is awesome...I'm sure he appreciates your bringing him a name. Hopefully he will move it soon!

There has to be clarity in such transactions especially if dealing with strangers. If this is your first time you did such a transaction without clarifying what you will get up front, and from whom, then view it as a learning experience. We all learn the hard way sometimes, no shame in that.

If you've been stiffed like this before, then it's your fault for getting into this situation again.

This is seemingly contradictory:

I thought the sale went through, so what is the "big guy" going to have to sell, to give you something? Didn't it already sell?

Or is the "big guy" the buyer? A little hard to follow what you wrote.

Will do - good luck! If I find anyone I will ask if they are interested in the Canadian version

No - big guy bought it for his portfolio- when it sells I will get some back end. That could take years - nothing I’m thinking about now. It will be nice when it happens

I helped someone sell a super high profile name last summer using the big guy as the broker - guy gave us both a cut.
People come to me - I have connections- I usually get paid. I didn’t think this would end up an all day thing

So you brokered a deal and never thought of agreeing the terms BEFOREHAND?

Why were you expecting 10%, and not, let's say, 50%?

How was the seller supposed to know?

Live and learn. What's already been said.

Get terms before not after the sale.
The guy might have thought the other guy was hooking you up.
Andrew could hook you up with a little something for bringing him the sale. Or, I'm sure you'll be taken care of later. Maybe get some kind of deal with him for bringing him sales like this.

I wasn’t trying to traditionally be a broker - just help someone who appeared to need some help

Why do you say it is MO? Is that the big guy?

He said it in his first post basically. Big domainer, broker, the cussing, wife out of country, just bought a house. He literally posted a pic of himself holding keys to his new house on Twitter 2 days ago.

Ha ha as soon as I saw the F OFF, I thought that also, but I would have thought any 3L.com domain owner who has any sense of the domain business would have just directly brought it to them, I am sure they are willing to hear out any 3L.com buyer. They tend to know when a seller is desperate, and will leave just enough meat on the bone for them to bite. Most likely $50K, went down to $35K.

No idea. The seller might have just seen the other big sale and figured he had some money to spend and tried to sell it to him directly. I do think he'll eventually get hooked up for it, or maybe a token beforehand.
