Last week I wrote about 6666666.com (7x) at GoDaddy. 6666666.com is off to the races. It was up to $78,777 after 2 days. While that price seemed outrageous the auction has gone higher and now sits at $99,999 and closes today. GoDaddy educated everyone on the Dispute.com auction how fast payment needs to be made. This is the best case scenario closing on a Monday, so do you think this … [Read more...]

@Joe Styler Have you guys verified this bidding legit?

I could maybe in some way understand that for 666666.com (6*6), but for that domain?

We verify all bids especially high value ones. There's two bad bidders on this auction. The bidders were banned from bidding again and other more secure steps were also taken but the bids were not cancelled as normally immediately follows. I can see we pretty much knew right away the bids were bad and then took action on any related accounts days ago. Normally bids are removed when we find a bad bidder immediately following us taking steps to make sure they cannot bid ever again on the auctions. This time the bidder wrote in once he realized he could not bid anymore and said he would send us payment for the amount up front to prove he's legit. That seems to also be false so we are walking back the bids. There's a similar situation with the other bidder. Bottom line we were watching this auction closely as was everyone else.

So what happened Joe $71,000 legit close?

We took out any bids we thought looked bad before the auction ended.

Right 35 bids and 3 bidders, a new bidder came in at the end, the new bidder #9 and he bid $71,000. So that's the close.

Hi @Joe Styler I have a question:
If I bid on a domain $78000 and there is a fake bid of $90000 , then you 'discover' that the last bid was fake so you remove it and ban the bidder, must I pay?
I am asking you because once I am no longer the highest bidder on a domain and I can't overbid, I move to another domain and invest my money there, now if you ban the fake bidder and you ask me to pay I will not pay because I don't have money anymore or I think that the fake bidder is from Godaddy (kidding) :) !!! In my opinion you should take necessary actions before (and not after) bidding in some high value domains !

I was going to ask this question on TheDomains. TheD and Twitter is where I was posting my thoughts and findings on this crazy auction.

This is a legitimate question for sure. Especially in most normal auction situations where GD removes bids much earlier than the last 2 hours of the auction. If there is more bidding 20k over my highest bid and I am stopping at whatever my max is, I would be moving my money elsewhere and won't even watch the auction any further after getting knocked out. Even if it was 1k over where I wanted to bid, I am moving on and not looking back.

Luckily in this specific auction, as GD kept removing bids, they went all the way down from 99.9 to 69.8 and someone came in last 20 minutes and bid up to 71k. But what if bidding stopped altogether? Would be very hard to get bidder 7, 8, 9 to pay up if they moved on.

Great question Yan

First these kinds of bids are rare as we have a bidder verification process and manual and automated checks. In the few cases that something slips through and we need to take manual action, most of the time you are held to your bid. We actively watch and ban people in real time so very quickly after you made your bid. This auction was an exception so there was a couple days more than usual.

Ok thanks for the answer. I see the word "most" in there which makes sense. I am sure there are a few gray areas with this such scenario.

Lets hope this one goes thru and doesnt find more gray areas along the way.

Thanks Joe.

Namejet, dropcatch requires ID, agaist fraud. Ok then bidders also need to avoid fraud, and should be able to see eachothers' ID.

In my opinion, once you discover fake bids, you should cancel the auction and start a new one with legit bidders only, because if we are two domainers bidding on a domain, then the price reach $20000 for example , and you 'discover' that the other bidder is fake, I will not pay even $10000 because the price was artificially increased, and the right price should be my first bid in my opinion, you can't ban a bidder and keep his previous bids that participate actively in the final price.

We don't keep the bids. All bad bids are erased when we ban someone which is why you noticed the price drop from 99k to 69k.

Yes I understood, but you don't erase the bids that participated in increasing the final price (the final price here is 69k not 99k) because if there were not fake bids, I am not sure that there would be a 69K bid, perhaps 20K, 30k, but not 69k, do you understand me? Sorry English is not my mother language :)
I would like to say that the winner (69k) was encouraged to bid higher because of the fake bids.

This kind of shit happens to evil number domains like this one.

We removed all the bad bids this also removed any bidding activity that would change the price. We went from 99K to 69K. We believe the bids that lead up to the amount it closed at are valid bids.

Interested in the final outcome of all this, my guess is lucifer bought the evil Number .com , that is a wicked evil .com . i wouldn't touch a domain with a 6 in it if someone paid me a million dollars to put in my domain vault, wont ever happen
