Got this mail from Bodis today and I'm sure that everyone here is ok to join:

Sometime before November 30, 2018, the price of .COM domains may go up when the NTIA's "price-cap" agreement with Verisign, called the "Cooperative Agreement,” expires! You, the owners of .com domain names, stand to lose hundreds of millions of dollars collectively if that price increase goes into effect. But you also have the power to do something about it! Demand that ICANN and the NTIA take action NOW to stop a potential price increase on .COM domains and keep their pricing reasonable!

With just a few clicks, make your voice heard and sign a petition (https://www.change.org/p/david-redl-stop-verisign-from-raising-com-pricing) started by the Internet Commerce Association (http://internetcommerce.org/) directed at David Redl of NTIA and Göran Marby of ICANN.

This is what we need you to do:

1. Visit StopThePriceIncreaseOf.com;
2. Sign the Petition: change.org
3. Share the Petition on Social Media

Verisign has vast funds to help them lobby the Congress for the price increase. We have you, the domain name owner, to help us stop it! Please help us and share the petition and website on your social media, blogs and online publications.

Signed, I can't find anywhere how much they are talking about increasing .com , I may have missed it

Change.org is known to spam a lot, check comments at mywot dot com, so if you're signing always use a "non-important", "spam bait" email address. I signed using that way

Q: Has the term of the .com Registry Agreement been extended?

A: Yes, the Department of Commerce has approved the extension as in the public

interest. The registry agreement term now ends on November 30, 2024.

Not sure why Bodis seems to be the only one talking about it. Maybe they got old info ?

Yes, I wonder about this as well. I logged into my account and saw the notice. I never received an email yet from Bodis.

But... it's only Bodis that knows about this :D

ARE YOU ALL SIGNING A PETITION THAT MIGHT BE TROLL?

On a more serious note, what exactly will the price be for .coms? Will the cheapest be like $7.01 or something... Cuz if they raise it to like $11, then that meas namesilo will be $13... and continued....

@namesilo do you know anything about this increase.

As to my knowledge, with the 6-year agreement Verisign struck with ICANN in 2012 to operate .com they where able to increase .COM price by 7% every year but they did not. The .COM bulk registration price now is the same as 2012.

However, current administration in Washington may be eager to increase the price now, as it has taken a number of pro-business initiatives.

Thanks for posting this. Signed. I hope more domainers will join in and sign the petition. We need to make more noise to avoid this unnecessary price increase.

Increasing .com prices is definitely not a pro-business initiative. Making domains more expensive for small businesses, for example, doesn't help and Verisign sure doesn't need to extra revenue either:

Well, because of a large number of .COM domain registrations are made by individuals and companies outside the USA, for the Washington administration it is a pro-business initiative - the US will rake in more money globally. And yes, at the expense of its own citizens too.

it might be a good thing though, will encourage quality investing over mass speculation, people who play the game of sitting on truckloads of overpriced but essentially worthless .coms will be forced to liquidate but investors who decide only to hold a smaller number of high value .coms will be able to justify an increased holding cost, as they will have better upside value in their portfolio, so maybe it's a blessing in disguise

We're a member of the ICA (Internet Commerce Association), and this is a petition that has been headed by the ICA to stop Verisign from increasing prices on .COM domains.

We felt this was something we should spread the word on as I'm sure no one here including ourselves want to see an increase on .COM prices.

We appreciate everyones support. Thank you!

I'm quite sure this is wrong. The amount Verisign has been allowed to charge registrars was set to ~$7.85 .. with NO possible increase. The upcoming renewal will likely see the status quo is my guess. The best option however .. would be to open the contract to competitive bids. That could actually DECREASE the price of .com given the massive volume .. but I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen either .. but if it did it wouldn't be too far a stretch to see .com prices drop by $2-3 .. maybe even $9.99 retail and $6-7 for those with volume discounts. Opening the contract to competition should ultimately be what we're looking for here.

Respectfully .. I could not disagree more! While we all know of likely millions of domains held by domainers .. the truth is still that the vast majority of domains are being held by end users and potential end users (people with an idea who haven't built it yet). If prices go up, then some of these domains will be dropped .. but more importantly .. the demand on new registrations (hand regs) will also go down .. which will eventually lead to more domains being available to end users .. essentially a relatively increased supply .. which means that as domainers there will be less demand for our domains .. the final result being higher registration costs combined with lower sales prices and volume .. pretty much a disaster for domainers depending on the actual price difference.

Signed the day I got the news from Bodis. (thanks for the notification Matt!)
This is definitely too important not to care!
We all need to spread the word on, as we all stand to lose if Verisign win their argument
and increases the price.

I've been fearing the risk for a while that is why some of my domains that are .com have until 2021 for renewal, might add a couple more years to some of them. At, this point the renewals of $8.47 (or less) on .com's make cheaper than 95% of what renewals are on other extensions (well maybe a few cctlds cheaper but you get the idea).
