Just wondering what the general thoughts are about whether the recent trend to legalize marijuana will boost the prices of pot-related domains?

Having been out of the game for some years, this thread got me to thinking...

On a whim, I thought I'd make a play on my (last) name and just regged this:

budworship...com

Who knows, I think I might use it as a personal email account just for laughs.

Or try to sell it to Mr Bud Worship lol (I know a few guys named Bud, maybe a nickname that replaced their real name?)

Timeline for Marijuana Legalization in the United States: How the Dominoes Are Falling
"Going green has taken on a new meaning in the United States. Less than two decades ago, marijuana was illegal in all 50 U.S. states. With Oklahoma passing a ballot initiative in June 2018 to legalize medical marijuana, 30 U.S. states now have broad legislation in place that allows of the use of marijuana.

Think of the states as dominoes lined up one by one. When the first domino topples, it leads to a chain reaction that causes most, if not all, of the others to fall. That's what has happened, and continues to happen, with state legalization of marijuana. The timeline for marijuana legalization in the U.S. shows how those dominoes keep falling."

Indeed, some great names here. NYS is decriminalized but working to legalize .

My last name begins with "Bud"; I'm also surprised that the name was available.

Actually, I just hand-regged another couple of domain names since my last post:

bluntcure...com / bluntcures...com

I guess I'm a sucker for a play on words - even if the "butt" of the joke is on me.

This is going a little off topic, but I can honestly say I have been waiting 50 years for the repeal of a totally unjust law.
I can remember when possession of a seed (like on the floorboard of your car) could land you in prison, and I have known people that went to prison for a forgotten roach in their car ashtray.

Just to stay on topic, I have a few, one I got here:

Yeah, I've heard the term bantered about by some Millennials...I'm by no means an expert on this. :xf.smile:

Again my play on words got the better of me as I was shooting more for the adjective form of the word.

I'll leave it to the individual to determine whether the word "blunt" is in noun or adjective form...or both.

Thanks for the heads-up; I'll give it a good read...at least now I can say I have some skin in the game.

I've regularly seen them wack out certain names and branding options also. Specific to weed, pot, and marijuana. These municipal entities don't want pot shop names they are interested in Canna and Leaf etc ( the leaf is my plug fyi) ; and other non get high connotations on street signage and branding.

This has been totally my observation as well, here in BC, Canada. There are multiple businesses being granted licences and opening up in readiness for the October date. All of them are using "Cannabis/Canna" or "Leaf" names. The old stoner names referencing "Pot", "Weed" etc, or anything remotely sounding like it's from the Cheech & Chong era, are nowhere to be seen.

Nothing wrong with a "play on words"..think "High Times"..

~~~~~~~~~
Speaking of "High Times"
Canada Estimates $1 Billion in Legal Cannabis Sales in First Three Months
Canadians Could Spend Over $1 Billion on Legal Weed In 10 Weeks
Statistics Canada’s $1 billion dollar sales projection isn’t a yearly figure. Instead, it’s what the organization estimates Canadian cannabis consumers will spend on weed in just the final 10 weeks of the year. And that’s not even what StatCan expects Canadians to spend on cannabis total. The $1 billion figure represents just legal sales. Add on an extra $250 million to $315 million in illegal cannabis purchases. Then you’ve got the complete picture of StatCan’s pot purchasing predictions.
* testing labs
* nutrients for isolates
* nutrients for growing plants
* HVAC people people specific to cea
* education; and seminars
* trade shows
* online blogs
* clubs
* tax and compliance
* genetic and hybrid breeders
* small plug and starter suppliers
* equipment makers in cea (that's my day job). And yep it's got a top Leaf brand with solid trademarks. Takes years to bring a company to the retail space in equipment for instance, I know I live it daily.
Many on this list will be regional, more sales potential. There can be a leaf coffeeshop in say Portland Or and a Cannajava in Burlington Vt. This is where I see the true potential in this. Brandables are cool but hard too sell. Everyone lookin for a coffeeshop ; or smoothie domain will choose, hopefully:) from a myriad of seo coffee domains in the Cannabis space.
Lot of those names is because if they want to do business they have to abide by Government/Provincial (advertising) laws basically like the Alcohol/tobacco industry but in "Beta" stage..
Speaking of pressure from the public in PA...
Rally held in Harrisburg to support recreational marijuana legalization
State Auditor General Eugene DePasquale supports legalization
"
HARRISBURG, Pa. —
At the state Capitol in Harrisburg on Monday, supporters of legalizing recreational marijuana use rallied for changes to state laws.
Members of NORML, the ACLU and the Keystone Cannabis Coalition attended.
State Auditor General Eugene DePasquale supports legalizing marijuana in Pennsylvania, partially because of the money it may bring to the state"
I've found that " cut and paste " is used frequently to drop in legislative verbage.
Small towns and cities simply copy others ideas on laws and branding. They put in the no cartoons and characters on packages also in the same paragraph as no traditional marijuana references.
All of this is a mentioned by briguy is in the beta stages, but there is a trend emerging. Canna, Leaf and brandables. It's in the entire state of New Jerseys 250 page legislation proposed for instance. It's in there somewhere, last version I read. Their debating over taxation and micro growers.
This goes against many of Kieths actual true metrics of NOW sales. Most if not all of the legislative limits in branding has yet to land into true tangible business yet...they need permitts.
I'm not a domain guy ( exactly ) I follow the cannabis industry and local laws that are evolving. And then I put that to my inventory of domains. Not from a traditional domain perspective.
I personally think it will be too costly for local businesses to afford brandables and the difficulty in launching on street level. A seo I feel is a necessity, all in .com
The stores will have solid web presence for both updating on varietys on hand as well as for both pickup and deliverys in many cases.
As the prices drop branding will increase, think alcohol. Bar rack ( the cheap stuff ) and then there's Belvedere and Absolute. These stores, and their products will be no different with the exception of localized and state by state varietys and local and regional growers represented, as opposed to say Absolute that's global.
In the cut flower industry that is my core background the qualities of grower to grower with a specific variety or strain varies greatly. You will see tremendous competition on quality to maintain price; that would be supported by branding by grower and retailer. Or synergy of both.
Med Men: I'll at a later time get into this, it's a branding platform like McDonalds with local ownership with national standards. More later on this.
People won't be cheap. They know there's money in this. I feel prices from a few grand up top say five thousand would be a acceptable price for these startups.
As the Fall progresses we will see much of the state cannabis boards ( established as per 2016 ballot wins) and the decisions made reach a more local level where they will overlay local regulations on signage and such, including words.
This is truly a new frontier
The Alcohol/Tobacco business know that Cannabis will really cut into their profits..
Molson Coors Plans To Sell Marijuana-Infused Teas, Seltzers And Beer
We’re driven by being the first choice for consumers and customers, and [cannabis] is a new space that’s opening up,” Hunter said in an interview with Bloomberg. “It’s clear that the occasions that some of these alcohol-free drinks which will have THC and CBD components will be competing in similar occasions to alcohol.”
“Venturing into this in Canada allows us to do it in a very tight geography—we can incubate, we can test, we can learn,” he added. “And really, we had to decide whether we wanted to be a spectator or on the playing field.”
"Though alcohol companies know they want to make cannabis beverages, it’s not yet legal to mix marijuana and alcohol in the same product."
"
Molson Coors’s stock prices have been on a general downward trend since hitting a peak of around $111 US in late 2016, trading in the $60 range for most of the summer.
Meanwhile, tobacco companies are eyeing the marijuana space but have yet to make a strong move."
