This spring .App was released by Google and it has steadily moved up the charts and poised to be #13 as they have more domains in the zone file than the 3 right in front of them and they have no drops as of yet.
Why is .App doing so much better than most other extensions? Well there is a long list and if you are a domain investor you would have created a list.
  • 3 letters. They did not reinvent the wheel
  • It refers to something specific
  • The specific thing it refers to is a huge moneymaker
  • There is actually need, want, desire and demand...

Well, this is amazing, cute story.

I have invested in hundreds of different new gTLD extensions, but one which I have totally skipped, and have 0 registrations there, is .APP .... and he has invested massively just and only to .APP ...hmm...
really curious how this will work out.

And nice to see that .com domain investors of this caliber start to consider new gTLDs
:)

Probably going to take a hit on this one. They don't sell too well on the .com. I've had some, not buying anymore.

loansapp.com1,015 USD
wellnessapp.com1,225 USD
shoesapp.com181 USD
mathapp.com1,876 USD
etc

I agree. I just do not see what is so special with .APP...I have read all the explanation, and everything, but I just do not feel it will be something special, or different, comparing to the other new gTLD extensions.

If there is a good combo in .APP for good renewal why not to take it, but otherwise, same logic as in all the other new gTLDs should apply, imo. Well, but lets see, maybe I miss something and they will make huge sales with .APP, who knows? :)

Rick did buy Flowers.mobi

Took a big hit on that but the hit was very insignificant to the profit on his .com's he's sold.

Come to think of it i have not seen any sales of Ricks recently, anyone know anything ?

Yes, he blew 6 figures on .mobi a decade ago, he just repeated the same feat.
I'm happy to own zero.

Obviously this article is just a way to get domain investors to invest into .app/ngtlds

I have not personally invested in .app, but I agree with most off the points he makes in this post. The key thing we always stress is are there end users for any domain name. The potential market for app is significant with so many new apps. The rate of new apps in the Google Play store from 2016 to 2018 has averaged of the order of 2000 per day (levelled off since early 2018). And of course all the other types of apps.

It really is too early to say what the resale rate will be. The roughly 3 months since resales started has had 8 sales with an average price of $3516. That would translate to maybe 30 to 35 sales over first year, not great but as Rick says that is way more than many ngTLDs.

I guess we will all see.

I think we should be future-looking in investment and look into individual domain. It is not appropriate to compare .app with other ngTLDs as their backgrounds and targeted usages are different. In the actual stock markets, there are many cases that a few stocks can stand out from the crowd in bearish markets.

One reason why I think .app will stand out from the crowd is that Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), a new web technology, is emerging that may replace apps in the future. PWAs are websites which operate very similar to apps and can be searched easily in search engines. On the other hand, apps are hard to be searched in app stores. So developers and companies will develop PWAs instead of apps. .App is more suitable for any app-like websites (i.e. PWAs) than other extensions as it is more relevant to apps and hence may result in better search engine results.

.App is backed by Google and Google is promoting PWAs, so we can see .app is actually supported by PWAs. I think the value of .app increases as the popularity of PWAs increases.

What do you think?

I think if this is true, then in next round we will witness the launch of .pwa extension )))

Fact is the intuitive domain for any end user to type in is name dot com or name+app dotcom.

And having premiums as well as costing double of .com is not helping.

Have you seen the other TLDs that Google owns ?
They are DOA, they have no clue about domain extensions in general or they are just experimenting.

Whether you build a website or PWA, there is no need for purpose-specific extensions.

I must agree with @Kate that I scratched my head when I saw the list (which is here for those unfamiliar with Google plans -- note most not yet in availability)

https://www.registry.google/

I see that .page is in general availability next month. Despite what I think though, Google has a pretty impressive track record of success in various things, and a big advantage through their other operations.

I am pretty sure the only reason for Google to get .page was to create a vanity blog page at www.larry.page and an email [email protected] :-D

Does .app pass radio test? I'm not sure. Apps are usually for mobile phones, and for them we have .mobi already. Maybe someone should create .scr for scripts or .prog for programs. It is a good extension but would I invest on it: yes if casino.app is available for 10 usd per year.
