Greetings,

Why are url shortening websites banned?
The system created in the forum can be avoided very easily. The worst part is that once a domain is in the black list (namepros seems to save the domains that are/were used as url shortening) and does not let them show even as text.

Hello,

In short, URL shorteners make it possible to evade our security systems. Therefore, we block them.

For a longer explanation, please see this thread on the same topic:
We hope that helps.

Blocking them did basically nothing. From what I am understanding the blocking is done by reading website's title and possibly meta keywords, things that can be avoided extremely easy.

Nothing can be blocked entirely. The blocks most certainly help to avoid a significant amount of problems. If someone evades our blocks and we find out about it, then we will take appropriate actions and adjust our technology as needed. As always, it's a constant cat and mouse game that we go through every day to keep our members safe and the community operating smoothly.

We hope you understand.

This is like:
- sheriff : we have a thief in our community. The problem is that we have no idea who he is, so we decided to put everyone in jail.

If you are going to sacrifice the whole community for some users, why not just remove the feature to create links in the first place? Lol

Those are not comparable. Let's be realistic and refrain from the dramatizations/theatrics, please.

URL shorteners shouldn't be needed on NamePros for any legitimate purposes. In fact, many use-cases for them are forbidden by the rules (e.g., hiding the URL or showing ads before redirecting to the desired URL).

Please explain what you are trying to do.

I'm realistic, you couldn't find a good solution, and in the end you choose the easiest way, block everything.
The simplest case I can tell you is, I could not sell (not even type the domain as text) a website which is a url shortening service. I had to add characters in the domain to type it as text.
Regarding the need to use url shortening on namepros, the easiest example is signature, but there are other reasons too.

That's a legitimate purpose; we apologize for the inconvenience.

Please keep in mind that we offer upgrade options if anyone needs more characters in their signature.

We disagree; this has been the most efficient and effective solution that has not caused any issues except in rare circumstances like yours. Unfortunately, we cannot justify decreasing our security efforts due to an issue with a single for-sale listing in the past three years since we enabled this technology.

We hope you understand.
