Some facts from an overview of TOP 100 domain sale of 2008-2017:
  • January is when most big sales take place statistically, compared to other months for the period.
  • SEDO is leading the way in terms of number of sales in the TOP100 echelon within decade of 2008-2017.
  • More new gTLDs make their way into TOP100. Well, it was the ".top" that started the trend amass. .club, .loan, .bio continued.
Statistics are based on @NameBio figures. Any feedback is encouraged and welcome so I can fine tune it with pro feedback further.

Excel sheet is available to download for those fond of pivot tables.

Thanks for the post, very informative. Kind of makes me want to put buy now prices on some of my domains on Sedo and take them off UnDev since apparently deep pockets use Sedo the most..

Any info for % of type of domains sold from the top100? Ex: 1L, 2L, 3L,..., N, 2 keywords, made up words (brands), geo, etc?

Thanks so much for the interesting analysis!

It is interesting that January is the most popular month (and February good too). I had wondered if end of year would be more popular as companies rack up 'costs' for tax savings. Or I guess the company tax deadline in many countries is April, so maybe that is happening. Also surprised that July is slightly better than the rest of the last half of the year (although fairly constant) - I would have expected that to be a slow month.

I suspect when you add 2018 that the companies handling the .top extension will be even more pronounced than 2017.

I am not at all surprised that Sedo leads among venues for high value sales and has done so pretty consistently. Of course with respect to venue, need to remember that some venues like Afternic, Undeveloped and most registries do not report, so sales there only get on NameBio if a buyer or seller or someone associated submit them, or if publicly announced in a verifiable way.

Thanks so much for the great analysis! This is the kind of thing I wish we saw more of on NPs!

Thank you, @Jay Ha for your kind comments.

I will need to do some formulas to go through the categorisation you are talking about. 2018 is nearing its end soon anyway, might be something to do for the refresher report 2009-20018 decade.

Great idea, even though time consuming, will be a fantastic insight for sure!

Hi, @MetBob!

Thank you so much for the kind words! Even though in the learning curve, this stats helps me to understand patterns, bigger players etc. NameBio does a fantastic job in collecting and providing data there for all - I found it really a great source of info.

Lots of insights. In the excel I highlighted duplicates and it is interesting how names migrate and change hands within just short period of time someone doubling the price tag.

Most humbled by your kind words.

Best, Nat

I would put all the privates together, 3 different entries for that. Private, Pvt Sale, Private Sale

Thanks so much for the interesting analysis!

Some of that could be industry events, Namescon was Jan/Feb of this year.

Hi, @JB Lions and thank you so much for the feedback! You are good at reading fine print boring paragraphs, are you ;)

Probably will do in the refresher update. I kinda didn't feel entitled somehow to deviate much from NameBio. But also discovered it after I had quite some reports pulled together, so felt a bit pressed for time to redo it, quite honestly.

Promise to do so next time though for the better precision, totally agree!

This is an insight about the industry events results going into early months too, thank you!

Most welcome, @Folio Team!

Enjoyed compiling the report. It is fun to have a look at a bigger picture and those big numbers are an inspiration for every domainer - a veteran and a noob alike.

So much of interest in report! Everyone be sure to click on link to full report from her blog using link at the top of OP (or repeated here).

I found the graph of how sales volume and average price varied over decade interesting and important information for domain investors.

The day of week is an interesting observation I had never noted before. The only possible explanation I can think of was for most of decade those announcing big sales wanted maximum press coverage and conventional PR wisdom is go midweek. So why the change to Sunday which seemed to approximately start when ngTLDs started? Also it corresponded roughly with big push on domains in Asia. Different thinking re best PR day in that region possibly?

Thanks again for fantastic analysis, @TOP gTLD !

Bob

Dear @MetBob, I can't thank you enough for the interest! This is why I did the report.

I may have been a bit too frivolous in terms of judgement of the future trends /I appreciate there are a lot of veterans who have invested hundreds of thousands into .com inventory/. But I truly believe it may be the likely scenario - maybe later rather than sooner, but likely anyways.

I hope I have not offended anybody :), just imho - even though a new hand here, I have been around for a bit and immersed into diverse businesses, allowing some space for judgement.

Once again, thank you so much for your opinion, I plan to do more of the analytical articles of all sorts, will keep the community updated.

PS. If you like playing with pivots, the excel sheet, that is downloadable from article too - gives you so much more - all domains by registrars - the interesting point is how one and the same domain is sold within short period of time - all duplicates are highlighted for ease of use.

Thank you, Sir. Real flattered by your kind feedback.

I really look forward to seeing additional analysis and blog posts from you, @TOP gTLD . Yes, agree some of your discussion points later in post, well not all would fully agree with :xf.wink:, but I really like the emphasis on starting from an analysis of numbers as you did. You found several things that I would not have predicted, so I definitely learned from your analysis. I see absolutely nothing wrong with adding discussion after an analysis, but on NPs some just concentrate on one part of that and ignore the full analysis.

I think the most important thing from your analysis is looking at how number of sales, volume of sales in $ and the average price varied over the decade. I had not realized that average prices were substantially higher in 2009-2010 than currently, and that it has been pretty steadily decreasing since then.

Thanks again for putting all the work into this. As you probably noticed I promoted a link to your analysis on my Twitter this morning.

ps Sir makes me feel even older :xf.sick: - I am not that experienced in active domain investing either. Thanks for your respect but Bob or That Guy That Writes Long Posts or anything else is fine (well almost anything!)

Thank you @TOP gTLD. This information underlines one of the key pieces of advice given by experienced NP'ers: Stay informed on changes in the industry. From my limited experience, it seems as though one of the big keys to success is flexibility. In a way I think being new at this is an advantage, as we can just start with what's going on now rather than having the expectations of earlier years.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you, @J Sokol! Indeed, the landscape is ever-changing, important to keep an eye on new trends! Bigger picture is always vital for understanding micro phenomena.
