So im into my 4th day buying and creating Domain names. I havent sold a thing yet but im kind of feeling great about the learning process and was hoping I could gain some valuable insight threw this site.
I have a Focus containing a few Sectors broken down.
How accurate our GD and other sites "appraisal" they give on domain names ?
Cheers

Welcome to Namepros!

Automated appraisals dollar valuations should never be relied upon for anything.

So what does besides the obvious Sale of an actual Domain ? Not really a worthy reply information wise ? But thanks for the reply.

Don't trust bots. The best indicators of value are the reported sales of similar domains and tlds taken if you own the .com.

Hello!

I rely on 20+ years with domain names as a barometer re pricing and, moreso, the search /research
for " comparable sales " and prices realized.

Pricing in my opinion, is a " well educated guestimate" as a million and one variables can be in play.

Welcome to NP!
Some tips that have been helpful to me as I get started in domaining:
1) Take take time to read through the threads here on NP. Especially helpful is this introductory section for beginners: https://www.namepros.com/threads/popular-beginner-discussions.844937/
2) Read a lot and buy slowly - that will keep you from spending money on domains that have little value.

Good luck!

@ThatDomainGuy

Hello and congrats on your new venture, just be very careful, domaining is not what it once was and it takes years to build a valuable portfolio. You will be tempted to go on a registration spree and that would probably mean failure for you. Read, pick your domains carefully, spend only what you can afford to lose and above all remember that the renewal dates come very quickly and you have to be prepared to reinvest on a yearly basis.

Good luck (y)

I would add my welcome as well, @thedomainguy (BTW nice username, surprised someone had not taken it!). I would echo those, such as @MapleDots, who urged you to start slowly. Almost everyone here has rushed into registering/acquiring domain names that they later regretted, particularly in the early months. I wrote a long summary of advice, and #1 was start slowly! (entire post here if interested)

Before acquiring a domain name make sure you have a fairly long list of who might want / value from the domain name and some ideas on how they would come to see it.

Re valuation, if you use the search button you can find various heated debates re automated appraisals but I would briefly offer the following re the value of a domain name.
(a) It is only worth as much as someone who wants it is willing to pay.
(b) It is helpful to use NameBio.com to find similar domain name sales. For example if you had the name NamePros.net you would first look to see if any direct sales in that. If you found it sold in com for $35k, then maybe the net is worth 10 to 20% of that. If no sales directly, look at sales of net extension domains that start with Name and those that end with Pros, and look through this list to find comparator names.
(c) GoValue will help you find comparators not in NameBio and is rather good re comparators in most cases. However, don't place too much confidence in the actual appraisal value. Use Estibot to see how they agree with each other. Estibot will give you an idea if advertisers have CPC.
(d) Either formally on Appraisal section, or perhaps better informally with those whose judgement you trust, get several opinions of worth.

Welcome to our community, and we look forward to your contributions!

Hey Bob.

Hope your headed into a great weekend !
Thanks a bunch man for the positive "mana"
Stoked to be here.
Greatly appreciate the time and thought put into your response.
Im guilty of pulling the trigger on a few domain names I've created myself.
Research is the name of the game for sure. I have so much to learn ! Really excited for this venture. Got to pay to play unfortunately. With education the odds are increased. Nothing guaranteed. All learning along the way.
Thanks for all the recommendations , putting them to use.

Cheers

I suspect that 90% of us when first into domaining registered more than we should have, and had some regrets later. However, even that can be a positive experience, as one is motivated to work even harder to show that the early choices were good ones to cement a deal. It is psychologically important to get those first sales, so urge you to be realistic with price expectations in the early going. Lots of time to hold out for more premium prices a bit later in the game. Not all would agree, but that is my view. Best of luck!

Nicely put. I would have to agree with you Bob. It makes the world go round. Progressive thinking. Only way in my book.

Im hedging towards the future on my plays. Im a "creator" by trade. I rely on my ability to utilize creative out of the box thinking to excel. Failure would be the response if I did not believe in or relying on my Concepts and Creations.

Would be great to get some constructive criticism by you if you have the chance on a few of my creations. Have 3-4 structured sectors that i focus on.. 1 sector im truly early to the party. But oh what a party it will be. Science Tech is in its Infancy, domain wise. A great deal of tech that will 100% become the IT.
Im cool with taking a gander on the other side of the fence. Search for new grass. Literally..)
Original sells.
Again I rely on my own creations. I will succeed...I will fail. But im confident come time. Ill succeed more so then fail.

Aloha

I agree with MetBob that most of us start out a little too enthusiastically -- and that doing so is part of the learning process.

Yes I agree as well. I have much to learn but it's not going to stop my creationism.
I have a hard time understanding how names that have absolute no meaning what so ever are selling ?
I feel its an un regulated game kind of. With some kind of inside trading going on

I'm not the man. But I think you are trying to go from crawling to running in an impossibly short amount of time. Just read a lot, keep an open mind, if you make a bad purchase move on to the next. Many people on this forum will educate you over time if you let them. I never stop learning and I would never pretend to know something if I don't.

Welcome! I agree with the above on the use of bots as valuators but often can't resist using Estibot to get a ball park figure.

As people have said a much better indicator is what is actually selling and Namebio and DN Journal give a great indication. I check Namebio every day to check the previous days sales.

I am a relatively 'new' domainer too compared to some - I can tell you the initial enthusiasm will turn to bemusement and then the enthusiasm will return (x100) the more you learn and get that first sale.

You're right too, it takes money to make money but you have to invest wisely. You're doing the right thing by commiting to reading and learning a lot before diving in!
