Well, your're looking at a 3500% return on your investment. It never hurts to counter, but taking a profit is always a win. Just my opinion though. Good luck to you!

Personally, I would take that offer and run because it's not a very good domain and you're lucky to get any offer on it, let alone $500.

$500 will get you something much better / more valuable on Godady auctions or Namejet.

1. The name was registered today.
2. It is not listed at Afternic or Sedo.

Therefore I think it is a complete BS / trap.

Counter with $800 and wait his next offer, always you can to accept his first offer, may be he will accept your counter offer. If you will accept his first offer immediately, a buyer can reject and will ask you to reduce from $500.

IF you are ready to sell and invest that money to make more its fine. Else you can negotiate if you think you deserve more for your domain name. Make a genuine deal. Asking too much could lead to rejection.
