Tried searching for this answer and I am sure I have seen it posted by other members, but confirmation would be appreciated.

I have a org name and the .com version has a minimum bid of 20k and has had a few bids on it.

To make sure I don't under/over price the org version is the general rule of thumb for pricing the org 10% of the.com value? So 2k in this example.

Now to make it competitive would you price lower, I am thinking circa 900 - 1250 range and see what happens....

I did not buy the name because the .com is priced at the mentioned amount, only found out this morning while doing some additional research.

Without knowing name impossible to say if 10% of .com is valid. It also depends a lot on category. For example, with health wellness sites it is possible for .org to have a value similar or even more vs .com based on the many major dot-org health sites. who prefer .org over .com Also so regarding acronyms and words in some categories like nonprofits, educational, gov, associations, foundations and a few others, pus health.

Thanks for the clarification, it is not associated with any of these so will stick it up at £950 and see if anyone bites.

10% of .com is usually pretty accurate, if the name does not fit the .org extension, then the name may be more around 1 to 2 % of the .com value IMO, I personally won’t buy a .org name if it does not fit the extension.

I have noticed quite a few crypto sites using the org extension, is this just at the start up stage or because the owners of the .com are asking insanely high prices for them?

I have wondered the the same thing, I have seen some decent sales of .org crypto names, I can see the relation of crypto becoming organizations, but I have yet to be able to rap myself around the whole crypto currencies niche

While it does (surprisingly!) not list .org specifically, Bill's excellent price guide at NameNinja ( at this link ) suggests dimensions like .net, .io typically 5 to 20% of equivalent com, and that seems about right to me for .org, although clearly it depends on name. A name that might appeal more to the non-profit or crypto space might value a bit more, a business maybe toward bottom of that range.

By the way this is a great guide to give ranges for one word, two word and invented com, as well as 3 letter, and also the equivalent names in one of the main country code, popular alternatives like io and net, and new extensions. Highly recommend it!

Thanks for thanking me, although in fairness I should have said that I first saw it some months ago from @Michael Cyger or Domain Name Academy (two separate Twitter feeds) on Twitter. But yes, very helpful and I have already referenced it several times when interacting with clients. And of course @Bill Sweetman is the creator of the amazing graphic. Here is the link again everyone:

https://www.DNAcademy/how-much-is-a-domain-name-worth (DNAcademy link)

http://www.nameninja.com/blog/name-...ide-to-help-startup-founders-budget-correctly (NameNinja link to price guide)

There was a debate a while ago about Twitter, with most negative, but would just like to say again that almost every day I discover on Twitter something helpful domain/brand/startup/analysis related, even though I spend a lot of time here. Would urge more to try out Twitter!

Thanks Bob (y) I wondered if the owner was on np. I hadn't noticed you'd tagged him, so I did a search and there's a lot of ninjas here. (I think there may be more, but of course, you can't often see them.)

Bill is a major domain handler here in Canada, but I don't think he very often posts on NPs though. He is super respected as someone who has handled a number of large value domain sales.

I agree with this. In some cases, I find that .org is almost on par with the .com equivalent and even better suited. Personally, I will prefer domain names like worldpeace.org or humanrights.org to their .com equivalent. Especially, when you consider that most global organizations, charities and foundations build on the .org extension if they want to be taken seriously

org also is popular in educational use and schools, i.e. some .org acronyms have sold for 5 figures for education related sites.

The ".org is only for non profits" story is a myth. Maybe it was true in 1999 but not anymore. .org is for ANY type of business .org is the 2nd best domain extension after .com

Ignition.org sold for $2500
RawMilk.org sold for $500
Dreamy.org $3300

And there are many forums online that use .org I've noticed.

Crypto startups like .org for 2 fold: probably cheaper Domain name, and I believe the .org registry is in some way decentralized. Not sure if true but that's what I've read

I did not buy the name because the .com is priced at the mentioned amount, only found out this morning while doing some additional research.

Just doing fraction might not quite work, except for really high value names.

I sold a .org for $45K and the .com of it would definitely be 7 figure name. So in this case it was 1/40-1/100 range of .com

But then, if .com is $10,000 name, .org wouldn't be automatically $100-250. They could be worthless for some and could be up to 1/10 if in anyway relevant to non-profit or crypto etc.

Take acronyms, for example. For 4L .com there might be hundreds of potential end users that would benefit from it, while you might be hard pressed to find 1-2, if any, for matching 4L .org and even then they might never be willing to pay even low $xxx.

And now add on top of that 50% higher renewals. I owned thousands of .orgs and now am down to tens and probably will just leave handful.

In short, if you have 3L, great dictionary word, mid to large city name, popular first/last names, crypto related names, then by all means, price high and stick to it until sold, otherwise, you are much much better off just focusing on .coms

The 10% rule applies until a stronger debate. Some type in 2 words maybe more specific to needs.
horse dot com net org may not appeal as much as horse dot bet which sale of may lift values again etc.
