Hi, I'm a designer / web developer new to the domain buying scene. I like the fact that when I buy a cool domain name, there's potential I can develop a website on it myself.

But recently I spent a lot of money on domaining... so I would appreciate if you have some advice or direction for me; or maybe I should just quit domaining because of how bad the regs are?

Also what should I do with keyword domains as Brandbucket doesn't seem to like these.

4xAA.com (keyword)
AceGT.com (brandable)
AgenciesList.com (keyword, will develop this)
AiBoots.com (keyword - nonexistant yet)
Aihance.com (brandable, I like this a lot because of Behance (big site) )

one of the benefits of working with BB is that you can submit "unregistered/available" domains, if & when approved, you can then get your babies..

you avoid huge losses doing so..

Appreciate that advice, but can I see the link for that info please?

I mean their staff could just register the domain before you get it.

Also the same for Brandpa, Namerific, Brandroot?

I don't have a link for such but you can ask Mr. Keith Deboer @Keith DeBoer to confirm.

BB team will not register the domains, I & others are doing it all the time.

As to BP, no they only review registered domains.

Don't know about the others.

good luck

Cool, I'll take your word for it!

@MS-Domains PS. It takes them a week sometimes to approve the names though, so there's a bit of a risk involved but it's good to know anyway.

yes, there is.. it is one you'll have to take.

& with proper research & practice, you'll eventually be able to recognize good from bad brandables.

still, losing an accepted name is far less painful than losing such amounts of cash.. imo..

thanks

The shame is that for what you have spent to register all these undesirable domains, you could have purchased 1 or 2 decent domains through an auction or even NP. It's much better to have 1 good quality domain than 50 poor ones. You should definitely spend more time reading and researching before purchasing more.

Digery.com (brandable)

Perhaps the only one I would develope.
A digital dairy?
Longggg shot but might make the cut if you build it with a friendly ui.
Good luck.

Are you saying all of them are undesirable?

Most of the keyword domains there have a lot of searches / month and some have over $1000 estibot values like FeetInches, VegetarianCurry. Altho I'm not sure to do with them.

And the brandable ones I researched brandbucket for inspiration and they are close to what sells usually (eg: InvestBliss, SkillJolt), unless I'm wrong?

Didn't think of dairy when I thought of that name, thanks!

I'm sure there are some that could have some potential, but put zero weight on valuations from estibot, godaddy, or any other automated valuations. They mean absolutely nothing. I don't see any value in "feetinches", but "vegetariancurry" could have some for the right buyer. Don't ever reg a domain based on evaluators though, that's just financial suicide.

By the way, I do think Digery.com is not bad for a brandable. That could be a worthwhile hold. :)

Yeah true, I like it for getting an estimate but sometimes it can be off like in this case. FeetInches is surprisingly $2600 on estibot due to the sheer amount of searches for Feet to Inches conversion but as a name I think it's really terrible and don't know how I can sell it or at all.

Maybe develop a feet to inches conversion tool but google already has one so it's a bit redundant.

Thanks, so hold on to it instead of selling? Hopefully I can make a return sale on one of these and it will cover all the regs I made.

By hold I just meant to keep it rather than letting it drop when it expires. Definitely sell though if you have an opportunity and fair price. Yes, that is one of the good things about domaining. One sale out of a batch of domains can potentially wipe away the tears and expenses. :)

I wouldn't spend any energy trying to get made-up domains listed on the brandable domain marketplaces.

2-word domains are the bread and butter of successful domainers.

Don't bother with hand reg. Make a list of 2-word domains that are relevant to your industry that you would enjoy developing and have a clear business concept as well. Business models that make money will pay more for a domain that represents them well. And you know the words that work in your industry.

These are just random ideas, no research at all:
  • DesignTutor.com
  • DevCrowd.com
  • SiteShield.com
Don't go for words that you need to look up. A good brand is one that uses words everybody knows and uses.

Pro Tip: Find a list of the most common words used in domain names and work back. If a word is used a lot it's probably a good one to use in a 2-word pairing. You could do the same for all the data on NameBio and make an average sale price for each word. Use this alongside your industry knowledge to make great pairings.

Contrary to what you think, if the domain ideas you have are registered that's positive, as it shows demand. If they are not registered put them to the bottom of the list for future reference.

Contact the owners of your listed domains to try and buy direct. You might be able to pick up 2 or 3 for your $500 spend if lucky.

Now you have a nice collection of quality domains that you can build on or hold. And more than likely you could sell them for a profit on Flippa because they would not have been in circulation.

Thanks a lot, this makes sense. In your example Design Tutor would be the most expensive one as that one has a lot of searches as well as being a good brand name... so would you go for keyword over brandable?

The last one I registered for keyword platforms like that was AgenciesList.com (but it's not ideal as AgencyList is taken) to develop a directory platform on. And FreeAds.io for a classified directory.

The brandables for BrandBucket makes too low money to be worth it? I submitted a lot over there and it's pending but they approved one of it so far (royalopen). I like Expertoid, Aihance (might keep this), SkillJolt, Zenasy, InvestBliss for the madeup names.

I just put most of them up on Undeveloped with a landing page for the time being and slowly submitting them to Brandbucket (brandables I care about), Namerific (brandables I wanna sell cheap / fast).

I see you have plans to develop AgenciesList - it works well with subdomains if desired e.g. Venture.AgenciesList.com or Appraisal.AgenciesList.com etc. so could run a bunch in parallel on one domain each of which had a unique third level domain name. Just a thought.

Fundega sounds like a crowd funding, possibly. I will let others more expert than I in brandables comment on those.

I actually think InvestBliss is quite good. It has a nice positive feel, two memorable words, and investment is a good return and demand area, and it is generic enough that it does not tie you into a specific investment style. There have been 42 sales of .com that end with the word 'bliss' average price $1176. Some of the nice sales seem somewhat comparable to me, e.g.
CareerBliss sold for $2788
TeamBliss for $3495
SilverBliss for $1395
I would definitely work on getting this one listed multiple places and in front of some potential end users.

Thanks!

For the Subdomains , I guess it would be more like Coding.AgenciesList.com or Design.AgenciesList.com, and that would work for google ranking?

I noticed that google doesn't bold the keywords in the URL anymore, maybe the URL doesn't matter as much nowadays. I really didn't know if I should use a brandable wordspin like Agencist.com instead of a keyword for this website.

How does Fundega sound like crowdfunding? that's interesting, thought it meant just to do with money.

Much appreciate your thoughts on InvestBliss, thought I was going crazy thinking that I like the name and no one else here. Invest has an average price of $5712 on namebio as well so that's something. Seems like it could definitely get $3k or so, I'll submit it to BrandBucket :)

Here is the seller's info for BrandBucket.

https://www.brandbucket.com/help/faq/sellers/what_kind_of_names_do_you_accept_for_listing

If you'd like confirmation that BB will accept for appraisal domains you do not own
sent them an email: [email protected]

There is a $1 fee for every domain review/appraisal, whether you own it or not. If the domain is accepted there is a $9 fee if you decide to publish it on BB. However, that fee has been waived for the past year and there are no immediate plans to reinstate the $9 fee.

Send me a PM if you have any questions. Happy to help :glasses:

Automated appraisals are worthless. Names don't sell just because of search volume, the TLD matters, the name has to make sense etc.
And for some names, you say you don't know what you would do with them. If you don't even know, who is supposed to know ?

If you were able to handreg all these names, it means nobody would touch them for regfee, nobody had the same brilliant idea, then the odds you will be able to resell them for more are slim.

Now you have a big pile of junk that will cost a lot to renew (which I advise against).
Instead, you should have bought just a few good names on the aftermarket.
Quality > quantity.

A few are OK, I think Expertoid is cool. But it's very easy to lose money with domain names, after all the majority of domainers are losing money. They normally all make sales from time to time, but the revenue does not offset the acquisition and renewal costs. This is something you have to consider.

And I am sorry to say, domainers are expecting too much from the marketplaces, they can't sell names that nobody wants. BB will not deliver miracles for you. They even charge people for the privilege of listing names with them. So they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The risk is on you.

Obviously, you are never going to develop all these names, nobody has the time to develop and maintain hundreds of developed websites. You need to be more selective and stop trashing your money... right now.
