Offers shortly after renewing name

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
Just wondering.. has anybody received an offer on a name within a day or so after renewing the name?

This has happened to me twice in the past few months.. I suspect that the buyer was watching the whois record in hopes that the name would expire, and as soon as it renews they make their offer.

Curious to hear about the experiences of others.

It's has happened to me 3 times this year and each sold for 4 figures. The fourth is under negotiation. I renew all my names at least once before considering a drop!

It's happened to me uncountable number of times. The point is that some domainers (may be end users too) keep on their watchlist domains of particular interest to them. They will wait and watch till about it's expiration and then swing to action. The smart ones may contact you to purchase the domain, instead of using dropcatch services - which is more of a lottery. And you're more than inclined to bargain.

My strategy is simple. If i'm undecided on keeping/dropping a domain name, I deliberately leave it to expire and keenly monitor the number of queries it receives via whois. If I observe any spike in the figure, then Some domainers are watching!. I renew the domain within the grace period.

It is almost routine in this business...

How do you monitor the number of queries a domain receives after its expired?

regarding the above, I am also wondering how, and you can't tell by your stats since the registrars I use and others immediately change the DNS when it expires.

There are several options. For example, if you're with GoDaddy, you can download your domain list to see the number of whois queries for each domain: monthly, weekly and daily. see attachment.

Epik provides lots of info about whois lookups for all domains in my account. Each domain shows the number of lookups and it's color coded to tell me if one person is checking multiple times or if multiple people are checking within the same organization. It even shows me the IP Address of every person who checked and the dates that they checked.

For GD you get to this screen, then MORE, then EXPORT LIST, then choose the option for WHOIS in the checkboxes and download the list.

For Epik, you login and when you get to your domains dashboard you click PERFORMANCE and you'll see the WHOIS checks on the side.

Epik shows lots of performance data for each domain in each portfolio in one concise table.
