I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
If it drops, it could get more this time around.

I doubt it, as old school EMDs are not getting the cash they used - times have changed (i.e. the move to brandables) and Google has totally negated keyword domains like this.

In 2018, this would sell to a company name that starts with Oil, not a company that just sells oil. Look at Shell, they dropped ShellOil.com not long ago to stick with only Shell.com under Shell Global. Shell Global an "energy company", can sell anything, while Shell Oil is strictly one-dimensional.

If I recall, it went for around $25,000 about 8 years ago. I was in auction for it.... I tapped out at $24,999. lol

If it drops, it could get more this time around. We could all dump our piggy banks and go for it together. Then turn around and sell it to Shell for mid 6 figures. :P

Has not sold so far..... only a limited number of oil companies in Canada and none of them are called "Oil"

Even if I was dealing in hash oil it would mean nothing to own the domain oil.ca, I would want hashoil.ca

Personally I would not spend 25k on oil.ca, I would rather buy something like blue.ca as my next acquisition. That domain name can be used for anything and would have a much broader base appeal.

I go into a bar..the waitress ask, what I want..I reply "Blue" and I get a Labatts!

Oil can be a great redirect for a CBD oll site...coconut oil..baby oil..

Just my thoughts..

Yes but you would have to go to a gas station to say "Oil" then they would ask.... what kind.

I still think if I am going to spend 25k I could pick a broader potential domain.

Oil is not the same as POT, now that one I would spend a lot on.

Just giving exsmples of other uses for potential enduser.

Not sure about which is better..oil or pot..with the right marketing team/plan/budget..anything can happen..

Sex.ca would be my dream buy for three characters..

But in this case, the proper example to "oil" would be "beer" and you'd still get asked what kind you wanted.

This similar to when CPU.com went to auction and everyone expected Intel, AMD, ARM, etc. to get in a bidding war, but it's a different world today and none of them wanted it. They are happy with their brands and didn't want a generic that might possibly muddy the marketing waters.

Now, Oil.ca is still a valuable LLL domain, but it's really only of interest to a company like Oil XXXXX (I found 5 federal corporations named like this and there are more provincial/private/partnership, etc.), not generically to any company remotely associated with some type of oil.

In the era of brandables, the market for generics is a lot smaller than it was 8-10 years ago. No major brewery is going to spend millions on Beer.com, but a company like Beer Law Offices might spend 5-figures for the name.

I’m curious if one of those domainers owned oil.ca? It’s been in redemption for a bit.

Oil.ca hit the TBR in 2009 and auctioned for $32,000 if I remember correctly. If its hits the TBR again I would expect to see a multiple of that.

I'm sure this sale price is listed earlier in this thread.

Wow, big surprise that Oil.ca got registered on MyID.ca - couldn't have seen that one coming a mile away.

I know in the US that Registars are allowed to do this, but I didn't think the same rules applied in Canada.

Was it renewed by the owner or did myid grab it before it dropped?

The number of days it stood on redemption (required by the CIRA) before it was mysteriously registered tells me it was obviously the latter. They can't touch it until then, and no way the owner is going to wait until literally the last minute to renew.

How many days?
@namesilo says can renew .ca up to 60 days after expiry.
What are redemption fee and how many days after expiry does redemption fee kick in? @namesilo

What are everyone's thoughts on renewing random/ugly 3L .CAs given the recent surge in TBR pick-ups?

MyID gets the Top 5 selections, including Lily.ca, Hashtags.ca and CryptoBank.ca.

Nice haul...

I am thinking the plural is not completely worthless.
Thoughts on CryptoBank.ca vs CryptoBanks.ca ?

Today is the first day of my 2 week holiday. I'm Vancouver Island bound with stops in Campbell River, Tofino, Parksville, Nanaimo and possibly/probably Victoria.

I'll be checking in sporadically so if you want to get together for beer/coffee or whatever PM me or alternatively I'll leave my phone number in my signature for the duration. Looking forward to meeting some of you and talking shop.
