I was blocked today on Twitter by DomainGang for essentially agreeing with one of their posts that was political (which I should have known better). This is after receiving likes for other replies in the past. Instant block when I replied today. Maybe it was one of their sponsors I spoke of - I dunno - but all I basically said was no domain company should push a political side and alienate the rest of their customers.

I have been in tech/domains for 2 decades and have always been willing to help, talk domains, fix problems for people at no charge - regardless of their political affiliation... Something is different lately, and everyone just blocks themselves into their own echo-chamber. Sad.

I enjoyed DomainGang's site - but how can I even visit it now if the operators obviously have something against me for one politically neutral comment? (I didn't pick a side)

With Politics bleeding more and more into Domaining lately - do you think this is positive or negative?

I truly hope this thread doesn't get buried - but I understand that NPs may not like my post like this. Sorry to the Moderators if this is inappropriate - but IMO it is very relevant and important to discuss.

As I am posting this I am hoping DomainGang isn't a current sponsor here - or I may burn this bridge too. But I am tried of being attacked or muted for trying to bring the 2 parties together on a common interest - Domains.

Absolutely this has been going on for awhile, I have had clients who told me if I know, and I have to know they don't want me to broker a name to a liberal, had another no Trump supporters.

I had someone tell me I should never associate with Morgan Linton as he is a "low life liberal" I obviously work and write a lot for TheDomains and Mike likes to make political tweets, I have had people say we won't advertise, others who block Mike, others who retaliate and block them.

I wrote back in 2016

So I had a reader ask me my opinion on a recent back and forth they had with a potential buyer. I was not really sure where my opinion would factor in as this was about his deeply rooted political feelings. I did ask if I could share the back and forth here on the blog. I was asked to edit the domain out, which I have.

Buyer: Good day kind sir, I am interested in purchasing **********.com. Kindly forward a price.

Now in the signature line of this email read the words “Feel The Bern” indicating this prospect was a supporter of Bernie Sanders.

Not sure I would have went with this response, but I understand the passion and political divide.

Seller: I would never sell this domain to you, kind sir. You and your socialist God, make me sick… I would never sell this domain to you and will keep it forever.

May you and Bernie Sanders burn in hell ! So kindly GFY !

I guess they will have to hold the name forever or only sell to someone where they can identify the political leanings of the buyer.

So would you not sell a domain to someone based on their political affiliation ?

A lot of people are blocking a lot of people if you have only been blocked by one I would say that's pretty good.

Personally I try never to have discussions about politics, in my personal life I have always avoided it, sometimes someone doesn't get the hint. They keep talking, 20 years ago at a dinner I just got up and walked out, after the person did not like me saying I don't wish to discuss politics, not looking to change your mind, and you will never change mine, next topic.

Looking at your choices, I would say the domain industry has always been segregated, not just because of politics, extension choice... I know people who hate Mike, Rick and most of the top domainers, why? They own adult names and for these people pornography is wrong.

Domaining a collection of echo chambers

Many times I have written about how divided the domain industry is, some like to say the industry has to become united again. It never was united. I see the back and forth with the latest posts by Rick, where some are like you tell em, and others are like aren't you rich? Nothing better to do. Morgan is telling people they don't get it, he is leaving out the point that some just don't care, they need to … [Read more...]

@equity78 - You have always been solid in my book. I'm pretty sure I've seen your around since I signed up here over 10 years ago. You have the right thought process. Politics are best not discussed and should have no bearing on who you do business with.

So would you not sell a domain to someone based on their political affiliation ?

I don't care what political, gender affiliation, race, sex, etc. We are all the same, we are all human, and I would never treat anyone differently. We need to come together as a society and world and understand there is common interest. So, I would never decline a sale or not buy due to someone's political affiliation.

I'm up here in Canada and often get involved in extended political debates on FB. I think political discussion and open debate is extremely important for democracy. But at the same time it has to be done using real facts and with both sides respecting the other enough to try to understand their perspectives. Both of which are seriously missing these days.

That being said .. when in business it's one of those things you have to keep in mind to some degree. Domains are international and people from different places are going to have different values and beliefs .. and if you let them get in the way you probably aren't going to get very far.

It's never happened to me ... but if I knew I was going to sell a domain to a company that was going to use it for a startup in Asia with 8 year olds making running shoes for 10 cents a day .. that ultimately is a political decision to help them. I'd like to think I'd say no .. but not sure how easy that would be if they offered to pay an amount that would clear my mortgage or something like that?

I'll sell my names to anyone. I might even enjoy selling a name to someone who's politics I disagreed with more...now I have some of their money, at least that amount they can't spend spreading their misguided political views :)

One more person who I have high respect for even though I have no idea of their political affiliation. I have seen you here posting lists and helping people. That is what people should be doing. Even if you could possibly be on an opposite site of politics than me - I wouldn't think less of you - or not do business with you. Another good person in my book regardless of your political views or even what you think of me. You reach out and help other domainers - and that is what I love to see. +1 to you and the positive domainers in this community.

Not necessarily the most neutral response, but I respect it. :xf.grin:

Edit: Smiley as it is deserved,

I got the gist of your post but on the bigger subject of being"neutral" in regards to politics or in responding to it, I honestly believe that that is the worst way to go. The MSM is a perfect example, instead of being the reporters or investigative journalists that they claim to be they just take "neutral" positions and act like referees, helping no one get better informed or helping to secure our Democracy, just attempting to secure their corporate paychecks.

Ideally we are respectful, but "neutral" never, because I can learn something from you and you can learn something from me as long as we are sincere, genuine and never neutral.
