Where does GoDaddy pull their comparable sales from?

When I check for a Godaddy valuation they always show comparable sales. I tried to check some of these by searching for the exact domains that were sold (For high prices) in Namebio and I haven't got one of them to come up yet. Are those comps just fake sales? Or where do those figures come from?

Most likely Afternic and GoDaddy itself (Premium and auction listings)

You are really suggesting that, just because namebio won't show GoDaddy's past sales, Godaddy's comparable sales are fake? ... really now?
Namebio and all the other similar services show just a fraction of what is being traded and we never know how those sales happened or what was involved in the sale... we only see the numbers.

Godaddy's valuation system is based only on the sales that happened through the years via their platform. That's what it is, it's not 100% perfect that's why you should know what it is before you make decisions.. but, based on fake sales?... :/

Supposedly from Godaddys sales history database.

One important thing to keep in mind, many of the sales can be very old. Sometimes a TLD will be very hot for a while and domains will sell for very high numbers. If the TLD cools off and you see an old sale it can fool you into thinking you have a great domain. A ten year old $5,000 sale of a .mobi might be shown as a comparable to your .mobi. Except today the $5000 domain might sell for $50.

Seems to be a newbie and was asking a question to learn. We can cut them a little slack!

You are totally right and I apologise if I was a bit harsh.
It was the 'fake sales' claim that turned me on. People shouldn't be so quick to find a scam everywhere.

@Mcpherson I believe Namebio only gets GoDaddy's expiring auctions and some older sales. You will find some sales show on dnpric.es and not Namebio and vice versa. I think we can be confident that GoDaddy have enough sales data to not need to fake sales :xf.wink: Perhaps @Michael and/or @Joe Styler can elaborate on this.

I guess Namebio reports just 1% of all global sales by volume and just 10% of all global sales within the Godaddy network..!!

I feel, GD as a market leader should come up with their own past sales record.

You will find some of the GoDaddy appraisal tool comparable sales on namebio.

It seems to be a combo of everything in NameBio + GoDaddy/Afternic's own data.

As far as I know their appraisal comps only include GoDaddy and Afternic sales. Most of their higher sales happen at Afternic, which doesn’t report to anyone, so nobody else will have those comps. It would make zero sense for them to throw in fake sales as that will screw up the appraisal.

@Satyajit Adhikary Your guess is way off. Why just make up numbers when you don’t know what you’re talking about?

Shortly after godaddy went public and bought afternic they stopped reporting aftermarket sales and made it difficult to track auctions. They have multiple patents for appraising domains, the sales data is worth something to someone. It was fun to watch them catch up to, if not exceed, sedo sales. Now they are quite the powerhouse D-:

Let me stress what other replies have said - just because it is not in NameBio does not mean a sale is suspect!

NameBio really has a fairly limited set of data provided to them. As far as I know, none from Afternic Network or Undeveloped show there unless the buyer or seller individually report it to NameBio.

Having looked at a few thousand GoValue estimates by now, while most are probably from GoDaddy, GoDaddy Auctions, and the Afternic Network, I am pretty sure they also have the publicly listed Sedo too.

they are internal sales, my only caution is;

1. no dates on the sales - are they recent or from 2001?

2. what names do they decide to include or exclude for the comparable's - will they include names that sold for $50 or $100 - or do they just use higher priced sales????

UrlUrl if you used the GD tool for a while and cross checked some of the comparables you’d know that some do appear also at namebio, some are recent some are older, and also sometimes the comparables listed are as low as $50.

Their comps aren't all recent. I saw some nice 4Ls worth a fair amount with sold prices around $xx or low $xxx. These names would be selling for at least $x,xxx or more today.

I think that they use the highest relevant sales they can to up the price. I actually found one today that GD listed as a comp on Nambio - It was a sale for $2000 from 2010.
