The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
BrandBucket publishes sales data annually but sometimes it's not until the middle of the following year. So sales data for 2017 has not been published but here are their sales stats for recent years with links to where the information can be publicly found.

*****

2013 - Founder, Margot Bushnaq, reports in a Domain Sherpa interview that annual sales for 2013 exceeded $1 million and that sales were on track to exceed $1 million yet again in 2014.

2015 - Sales increase to $2.4 million.

2016 - Sales increase again to $3.1 million.

2017 - No report yet. 2016 sales were not reported until August 2017 so hopefully we'll have a report coming out soon.

Meanwhile here are details from the 2016 sales report.
  • 1017 domain names sold
  • $3070 average sale price
  • $2295 median sale price
Average price went up year-over-year, and even with more high-value sales than ever, the median sale price of $2295 (half of the sales were above this price, half were below) is higher than previous years.

Sales Price Breakdown
  • 75 sales under $1500
  • 318 sales between $1500 and $2000
  • 404 sales between $2000 and 3000
  • 109 sales between $3000 and $4000
  • 51 sales between $4000 and $5000
  • 43 sales between $5000 and $10000
  • 17 sales over $10000
Of the 1017 domains sold, the bulk are in the $1500-$4000 range, which has proven to be a sweet spot for startups and entrepreneurs.

Buyer Behavior
  • 14.5% of sales were to repeat buyers
  • 2.27% average discount on listed price
The number of sales that closed with a discount was higher than previous years, mainly due to more transactions in the higher price range, and older inventory that had not had a price adjustment in many years.

Seller Metrics
  • 238 unique sellers with a domain sale
  • 134 sellers with 1 domain sale
  • 37 sellers with 2 domain sales
  • 15 sellers with 3 domain sales
  • 51 sellers with 4+ domain sales
  • $2,063,088 paid out to sellers in 2016

Regarding individual, current sales on BB, there are many sales reported by sellers at BB's private sellers forum but there are also some reported here on NPs in the Completed Domain Sales thread. Several were reported this past week.

Some even report them on Twitter!

I had submitted some brandable names last week, BB was quick to reject two of my submitted name but 7 of them still in pending review.

@Furquah
I don't know this for sure but it seems to be the consensus amongst BB sellers that when you get a domain(s) rejected within a several hours or the next day, that means the domain was rejected previously when submitted by another seller and the system is kicking it back to you as rejected.

That is where the problem is.

The inventory doubled from 2015 to 2016, while sales went up by only 25%.

The inventory went up by another 20% or so in 2017 and the sales haven't been up by that much (we will see this too when and if the sales data come for 2017).

BB sell-through now is probably around 2.2-2.3% average and around 1.0% to 1.5% for outsiders.

You can get similar result by adding to Afternic+Sedo and end up paying 15-20% in commission instead of 30%+logo (effectively 35%+ for most names) without going through logos, fees, waiting, selections etc.

I am done adding/purchasing names with BB. Have around 175 names there and will give it another 6 months to see if anything changes.

It's hard to pinpoint the sell thru rate because inventory is always growing. But we can get pretty good idea based on some facts. I have kept records on BB's inventory growth so I know that:
  1. Since Sept 2014 BB inventory has grown at a rate of 938 domains per month.
  2. In March 2016 BrandBucket had 27,498 domains on their website.
So let's add 3 months (3 X 938 = 2,814) to 27,498 and we get 30,312 domains. That is the approximate inventory on BB in June 2016 (midway thru the year) 30,312. Let's count this as the average inventory for the year since later in the year the inventory was higher and earlier in the year it was less. Both by equal amounts

In 2016 they sold 1017 domains.
1017 divided by 30,312 = .0335.
That means they sold approximately 3.35% of their inventory in 2016
Which is what we call the sell thru rate.

Every seller should do what is best for them.
The should sell their domains in a way that generates the most sales, income and profits.
BrandBucket may not be right for you.
Whatever platform(s) or methodologies works best, that is the one you should employ.

Wishing everyone continued success and prosperity! :xf.grin:

The slowdown has been for the last few months. The other places let us know if there is a slow down and when it can be expected to be caught up.They even show how many days each step currently takes. I just stopped submitting until it is resolved.

I've only been submitting for about 2 months, but have noticed a marked slowdown over the last 3 weeks or so. Before that, they were reviewing names generally within the 3 day range (sometimes a bit slower, sometimes even a bit faster). Now, I have some domains as far back as 6/30 pending review (although I have some other rejections through 7/6. Nothing after 7/6, and no acceptances after 6/28. I assume my domains between 6/30 and 7/6 are pending some sort of second level review and have a decent chance of being accepted. It is frustrating though, and in the meantime if the pendings get accepted on another marketplace I'm likely to list them there.

Who are insiders exactly?

Margo? I established about a year ago that she has a slightly lower sales rate than me!

Krell? I agree, his sales rate is amazing, he was offered a job at BB because he obviously understood the brandable market so well. He no longer works there.

So... what insiders / outsiders are you talking about?

I think BB should implement some sort of progress indicator like BrandPa.

BP currently shows average number of days to review a domain and also shows at what stage domain appraisal currently stands at.

It won't improve the speed of acceptance but at least users will know their domains are being looked upon.

Great suggestion :)

Thanks for the info. I wish they setup some sort of weekly/monthly newsletter or blog post specifically tailored for publishers making them aware about issues and opportunities.
BB does have a private channel wherein BB sellers can interact with each other as well as BB staff. NPs does not allow discussion of this but if you email me at [email protected] I can help you get connected. :)

Thanks for your post, Keith. I believe you are a true asset to BB.

Regarding the numbers:

Thanks God for Archive.org. No need to guess. On June 23 they had 31.3K names, let's say 31.5K by the end of June.

You can't apply 938 per month number, as it hasn't been straight line since Sept 2014. It was growing at much faster pace in 2016 and 2017.

1017/31.5K=0.032286 or 3.23% which is still very good, although worse than 800 sales from average of around 20K for 2015, which was close to 5%.

Now, unfortunately, it is not 2016 anymore. Average of inventory for 2017 was around 45,000 and average for 2018 will be 50000.

They probably have/will have 1000-1200 range sales for those periods meaning sell-through of 2.5-2.7% for 2017 and 2.0 - 2.4% for 2018.

Krell? I agree, his sales rate is amazing, he was offered a job at BB because he obviously understood the brandable market so well. He no longer works there.

So... what insiders / outsiders are you talking about?

1. Enter most valuable/searched keywords on BB website
2. Look through the top results, especially not obviously relevant, but generally top.
3. Lookup the owners of those results.

I am also aware of BrandBucket's search result conspiracy. I did find that myself, when I would search a keyword there would be some totally unrelated, madeup domains at 1st position or 2nd position (not 1st or 2nd page), sometime multiple madeup domains, owned by same person . When I'd look up whois to find the owner it'd either Boxador or former Managing Director MK's name. That was before Boxador portfolio moved to Namesilo and used privacy for whois.

NP member 'offthehandle' wrote a detailed post regarding this conspiracy.

Someone asked me this question on another conversation and I'm answering it here so as not to derail the other thread:

Since you are aware of their hierarchy of designers, I would like to ask about some inside info. Are the designers really waiting for the domain to sell to earn their $100?
I have seen logos which gave me the strong feeling that the people creating the logo do not care if the domain ever sells.
My understanding is that originally logo designers' only option was to receive the $100+ logo designer award if and when the domain sells. However, I think it was difficult to attract logo designers under this scenario. So these days I believe they have two options: $5 now or $100+ if/when the domain sells.

1
•••
its unlikely end users would keep those logos anyway..

3

this is the logo for a domain I have with them, I dont like it at all, but I dont think it matters.

i hope it doesn't ,lol..

I tend to agree with you. Some logos I like and some I don't like but sales don't seem to be influenced by logos. A nice logo on a poor domain is iike lipstick on a pig and vice versa. I think a good logo gives a small lift but nothing more.

No, please, not this again. It's endless.

Some consider there are insiders with privileges. Some consider there's no such thing as insiders.

Please, allow everyone to have their own opinion. This has been discussed till madness.

771 domains and only 2 sales?????:xf.eek::xf.eek::xf.eek::xf.eek::xf.eek::xf.eek::xf.eek:

you dont think you could have done better with afternic or using your own undeveloped landing pages ?????

Do those 2 sales even cover your renewals?:jawdrop:
With the exclusive clause. It makes me wonder:ROFL:

Has anybody had a name accepted after 6/30? I still have some pending review from 6/30 through 7/17. No acceptances. Have some rejections through 7/12, but seems they are taking forever to do their second-level review.
