Hi,

One of my .COM domain expired on 3rd July at safenames.com about 9 days back. I requested SafeNames to get Auth-code to transfer out the name but they said that the Domain name is deleted in 7 days and they are asking for $199 redemption fees.

This is against ICANN's policy. Its just their way to scam customers to earn extra $199. I have renewed several names post expiration within 15 days at other registrars like Godaddy, eNom etc.

Please avoid scam registrars like SafeNames.com

your right it is against icann rules

when I called icann once in past about stuff like this.. they said call us up.. give us domain name and registrar.. and we'll act on it to get your code to you within 5 days... their words.. u can try this if u want.

and now for the more obvious conclusions for all to draw from it:

never deal with registrars that only 100 people in the world have heard of.. there are enough big reputable verified ones to pick from.

this is worth remembering for all.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing. How you end up using them at first place?? Just curious to know so we all can learn something from it.

Thanks

Well, scam is a strong word that shouldn't be used lightly. Unfriendly terms maybe.

What is the domain status right now ? If it's already in redemption they can ask for such a fee.
If the name is just expired but not in redemption yet (grace period), then Icann policy is clear: you should be allowed to transfer out
https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2017-10-10-en

But the duration of the grace period depends from one registrar to another - some may offer no grace period at all so redemption would start as soon as the name expires.

PS: their site says 5 days only before RGP kicks in.
It is important to get familiar with the terms, that vary from one registrar to another and avoid making assumptions. Some registrars will allow up to forty days and even a bit more, but they are not all so generous.

Doesn't work out that way. They deleted the domain within 7 days of expiration. Which registrar does that for a .COM. I didn't chose them, i got the domain there through the backorder on Snapnames. So a registrar deletes a domain within 7 days of expiry and asks for $199 redemption fees is not a scam as per you? Its clearly mentioned on ICANN's website that I have the right to transfer out the name. Already registered a complaint to ICANN so that people are careful and stay away from such registrars. I wouldn't have chosen them if I had a choice.

I read over their Terms & Conditions policy.

"2.2.2 We may in our discretion cancel, and /or refuse to register, release or renew any domain name:"

Not exactly amicable.

As long as the domain is not in redemption. Have you confirmed this by looking at the whois record ?

Maybe the last owner lost the domain in the same way.

My advice for the future is to transfer any domains out of unknown registrars to your trusted ones, dynadot, godaddy etc
