advice Turning $25 into $498 - Make Sure To List Your Domains On Afternic

NameSilo
Watch
In this blog post, I discuss why I believe you should make sure you list your domain names on the Afternic platform. If you aren't, like I initially did, then you may be making a mistake.

Also, I break down certain things I look for when renewing domains in our portfolio. If they don't meet these specific criteria, then I usually drop them.

See more here.

IMO, it’s total time waste and no knowledge gain to read such post when the domain is not disclosed.

Thanks for the advice, the only nag being that there are quite a number of registrars now giving GoDaddy a run for their money price wise and with GoDaddy no longer giving out those promo codes like before not many people are looking that way. All the same thanks for the advice lots of sense in it.

The post was not originally about the name sold but about where to list your name for maximum exposure, though stating the name would also help

Nothing to read here...
Any normal domain can be sold for $498 and at any platform including own page.

But noise like "Turning $25K into $498K"...

In addtion. GoDaddy's systems are breaking down terribly when it now take 5 days to push a domain (with lots of uncertainty). At most registrars a push to another account are mostly instantaneous.

And they insist on 1 recent purchase in their auctions, I should provide them the auth code, on a domain I don't own so they can transfer it to GoDaddy to put it in my account. They were very rude when they said I should report the bad whois to the domain registrar. When even using GoDaddy's Whois, it shows I am not the registrant (different name, different address, different country).

Is this only happening to me?

Sorry you feel that way Abdul. Just not comfortable revealing the domain name. I'd rather protect the buyer, not too sure if someone would email them and let them know how much I got the name for etc. Maybe that won't happen but not worth it to me.

True, but Afternic is partnered with several registrars not just Godaddy. But Godaddy is still the registrar with the most traffic in terms of an end user looking for a domain name.

Thanks. Yes, exposure is key and in regards to this sale I didn't have to do anything but list it on the platform and eventually it sold.

I don't agree, as I believe I shared some type of valuable information in the post. It wasn't only about the afternic sale. I also briefly talked about my basic process for evaluating if I should hold a domain name or not.

Really? Any normal domain can be sold for $498. If that is the case, why are there millions of domains on the drop list everyday from people who couldn't "sell" there domains then?

Sure, selling domain names is very possible but I do not believe for a second that any "normal" domain name can be sold. Normal is subjective. What's normal to me may not be normal to you. It all depends on the type of name, quality, extension etc.

Yes, I agree you can sell on various platforms even your own landing page. My point was too encourage anyone who may not have listed or are lazy to list their names on a site like Afternic too give it a try.

Yes, the transaction was rather smooth and the payment was smooth as well!

Yes, Part 4 coming soon...

Yep, using all tools available to sell your domain is important. Thanks for the kind words.

Well it’s not really accurate if you didn’t subtract out Afternic’s cut? Is that $498 before or after Afternic took their share ?

I tend to agree with whoever said you can sell at that price anywhere. Less to do about where listed and more to do about the name which of course we don’t know.

GoDaddy and Afternic are terrible glitchy sites. If lay people go there it’s simply because they don’t know there are a ton of other registrars. I think a reasonably intelligent person can think of a name and find it on Google. GoDaddy not needed.

I wish there were more posts encouraging people to sell on their own page. 😏

Unless you misled the buyer about what you paid, it shouldn't matter. The buyer surly knows anyone can register a domain for less than $25.

Yes, I didn't add in the Afternic commission. The number I quoted was the Gross amount of the sale.

Regarding to the sites being glitchy, I haven't personally had an issue that I can remember. If a person finds a name on Google, how will they purchase the domain name though, which registrar do you think the average person would use?

Also, I LOVE the idea of having your own page and having it sell for you. It's something I have tried in the past but didn't have any results. Very possibly because my portfolio size was small or because the pages did not convert. Not sure. But I do know that now I park all my domains with Uniregistry and use their pages so I can get Inbound leads, which works well. Whenever I get an inbound lead, I continue to follow up with them.

Thanks for the sharing your thoughts!

Yeah I see your point, I did not have any type of prior contact with the buyer before hand as it was simply purchased via afternic without any discussion initially and after.
