Crypto related domain names have been hot property for investors in the recent past with domains such as CryptoWorld.com and CryptoBank.com selling for six-figures a piece. Up until now, the ultimate crypto domain name has never been for sale, with its owner publicly revealing the name wasn't for sale. This looks to have changed, however, since the name is now showing a holding page for Crypto.com, a service provided by MCO Technology.

According to the company's Twitter account, MCO Technology, also known as Monaco, has rebranded to Crypto.com. Headed by Kris Marszalek, Monaco raised a total of $26.7 million through an initial coin offering in May 2017, propelling the company's efforts to accelerate the World's transition into cryptocurrency.

The now former owner of Crypto.com is Matt Blaze, a Professor of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, who registered the name back in 1993. Matt is likely to have received numerous offers for the domain name in recent years thanks to the funding now available to many crypto companies.

None of those offers have been acceptable, until now. It's highly likely that Matt had been offered seven-figure fees for the domain in the past, but Monaco may have provided something in addition to money that made the deal irresistible. Perhaps it was equity, perhaps it was assurances about the domain's use going forward.

Unfortunately, no details of the transaction are currently known, but requests for information have been submitted to Crypto.com (formerly Monaco) and Matt Blaze.

Congratulations to both parties on the deal.

Update on Jul 10, 2018: The former owner of Crypto.com, Matt Blaze, confirmed the sale of the domain name in a blog post whilst stating he has no financial interest in the company. Reports have surfaced that this was an all-cash deal worth $12 million, with Cheddar.com citing an unknown source involved in the transaction. If this figure is correct, it would make it one of the largest sales of a domain name in history.

Agreed.

If the revolution is to succeed, whatever price they bargained for may yet in the future be viewed as a paltry sum.

Domainsherpa.com have to do an interview with either the seller and buyer but preferably both and an idea of its sale price but just to hear the offers turned down and due to the length of time he had the domain it would have been free to register back then in 1993

High 7 figures or 8 figures, only a fortune 500 company would turnt hat down.

He was a cryptology professor; that integrity of, "I'm not selling," is going to melt away when someone offers you $10MM +.

As it should.

Crypto currencies, and the technology, are blown way out of proportion.

Accepted fiat currency will one day be completely digital, and there will be very few winners at the top of digital payments (as it is right now). That's the only real version of cryptocurrency that you will see.

The ICO rush was fun, but thats done.

A $20k BTC coin was fun, but that's done.

The only changes for crypto will be the pairing with actual commodities with established values; instead of creating a 'futures' market out of thin air.

Congrats to the seller.

Sorry...but you are totally clueless. He DID NOT RECEIVE a $30 million offer. A domainer (who is on Namepros) advised him to ask $30+ million for Crypto dot com.

So what I heard couple of months ago here was true, 'every domain DOES have a price'.

Congratulations to the buyer (since the buyer is more lucky here than the seller, I believe-to acquire such a gem).

it will never sell again, not as a domain.. if it does, it will as a business..

They raised $26.7million in the ICO which was held in last year May. Techcrunch post says that they Monaco have a $200 million balance sheet due to the increase in cryptocurrency price. I guess they may spent 1% max of the balance sheet to buy the domain which means $2 million or less.

Some interesting comments by Matt Blaze today.

You may have noticed that this blog, and my domain, is now at www.mattblaze.org. Twenty five years ago, back in 1993, I registered the name crypto.com, which I've used as my personal domain as well as to host a variety of cryptography technology and policy resources.

Over the last few years, I've gotten an increasing barrage of offers, many of which were obviously non-serious, but a few of which were, frankly, attention-getting, for the crypto.com domain. I shrugged most of them off, but it became increasingly clear that holding on to the domain was making less and less sense for me. I quietly entered discussion with a few serious potential buyers earlier this year.

Last month, I reached an agreement to sell the domain. I have no idea what the new owner plans to use it for beyond what I read in the trade press, and I have no financial stake in their business. The details will have to stay confidential, but I will say that I'm satisfied with the outcome and that it involved neither tulips nor international postal reply coupons.

It's been, I think, a pretty good run, as these things go. See you on the Internets.

If I were in Monaco's shoes, with a $200m+ ledger, I would be willing to put 1/4 of that up to lock down the best name for a crypto card. If Monaco wants to be the top crypto payment processor, it would be a no-brainer to make sure no one outbids you.

No doubt, he was getting offers all day for $10m, it has to be higher. My guess is the deal was for $10m+ cash/crypto with options maturing in the next decade, pushing it closer to $20m.

Talk about wrapping it up, succinctly put to say the least

And a fairy tale ending to a domain owners story. Man ol' man. Dream come true for any one of us.

Now, he can take some of his profits and reinvest in Blaze.com, move off of that .org..
