I hope I am not duplicating a thread, but could not find a showcase for the newly in general availability .icu extension. I admit, in general I am not a fan of the extension, and it will be interesting to see how successful it is. Konstantinos Zournas commented on Twitter overnight that .icu had learned nothing from last 4 years of ngTLDs and I think there is a lot of validity to that. He did not outline what his tweet meant, but I presume referencing lack promotion, lack getting end users on board first, bargain initial pricing, holding premium domains at registry.

I believe in general the extension is intended to mean "I see you" but somehow the extension rubs me the wrong way (biz does also, along with many other extensions).

I have never seen this elsewhere, but another possible use for .icu would be as in intensive care unit, since it is a common abbreviation for that. Will be interesting to see if it gets any use with that meaning.

It is encouraging that it seems (at least from what Namecheap are listing as regular price) that the renewal rate is less than $8. A lot of good names seem to be reserved as premium by registry, although with variable prices some of which are only a bit above normal.

Do you plan to register any .icu?

If you have, registered some, share them with us!

I had no plans to register any .icu at all, but discovered that money could buy happiness, so I did! :xf.smile:

So as of right now I have happiness(.)icu

See it used in positive psychology, happiness therapy, positive childhood experiences, etc. ICU could be interpreted either as "I see you" - meaning groups that help people see or find happiness, or "intensive care unit" meaning those who help people deal with getting more happiness in their lives.

Be happy everyone!

I see that ICU has (surprising to me!) hit 24,000 registrations after day one of general availability. It has now edged into the top 100 of ngTLDs. Surprisingly, registrations almost entirely (99%) in three countries (US, UK, Seychelles).

Although growth rate now just a few hudred per day, I see that .icu now past 29,000 registrations. Also, I noticed Namestats are reporting 2 in top 1M Alexa - seems surprising for an extension just in general availability for a few days.

I have investigated prices for a wide variety of names. While most good names are 'premium', in many cases they are in $10 to $75 range. The pricing seems smarter than with some other ngTLD launches.

I have added a couple more .icu

ultrasound.icu
sustainable.icu

I like the former, as you do see ultrasounds, and the extension is gone in all reasonable extensions.
Has anyone else registered any? Tell us about it!

I grabbed two at lowest rates, because I'm sceptical about this one. It doesn't look appealing in general. However, ICU is an abbrevation for "intensive care unit" and could potentially be a good move in that direction.

Mine are:
Helpline / icu
Hotline / icu

Help / icu is up for grabs at a higher pricelevel though.

Regged one...
But then surprise from Sedo - they don't support this gTLD at all: Invalid domain.

It took them a while to get .app and this is newer and less well known. Will be interesting to see if they eventually do support it.

In meantime Undeveloped is one option, along with an Efty Marketplace or the registrar marketplaces.

It seems to have gone largely unnoticed, but according to @NameStats data the brand new #ICU extension already has 27 sites in Alexa top 1M - 1 per 1256 registrations (vs 1 per 4243 for #APP as comparison). I think ultimately end use is the key element that will drive marketplace sales, and I am encouraged that this many sites are up and running with reasonable traffic levels after just a few weeks of general availability.

Since I last posted I added
ancestors
patterns
perfection
kindness
advisors in icu,
as well as SeeMe (as in See Me, I See You).

I particularly like the word patterns that could be used in a lot of different contexts (analysis, investment, design, etc. even quilt), and "seeing" patterns makes sense.

I notice that the .icu registrations are almost at 50,000 rnow. Significantly, according to NameStat data, it is in the top 10 currently in terms of growth rate and also in terms of trend in actual use in websites it is also in the top 10 (click Useage and Trend).

You can learn about the .icu Pioneer program at this link. It provides those who have registered an .icu (mainly for end users, not domain name investors, I presume) with a set of tools for promotion of new sites.

Among the more complete actual working sites using the .icu extension is this one from India, that use their site as a catalog for a wide range of (mainly) industrial agriculture products. Whether you need a brick making machine, a log splitter, or a post hole digger, these guys have you covered! Should .icu take off in the sense of catalog sites, the potential market is obviously large.

I noticed that ICU now has the first two aftermarket sales listed in NameBio. They are just for $199 and $197 (both on Flippa), both two word expressions.

The much better in my mind is SwimmingPool which actually has very robust search and advertiser stats and it fits well with 'I See You' if interpreted as perhaps reference list, review, information site on Swimming Pools perhaps? (just sold on Flippa, does not yet resolve to working site).
Here is the NameBio listing:
https://namebio.com/swimmingpool.icu
It is interesting that the same name in the .eu extension went for $9000. Just for fun I checked what GoValue told me it was worth in .icu and it says $327.

The other makes no sense to me and has no advertising revenue listed. It is CowNature Interesting to see what it gets used for (if it ever gets used)!

Since many of the premium domains just go for about $78 and $18 (and the premium is only year one) I expect that most resale prices will at least for the short term, just be in the few hundred range. The highest two premium levels by the registry are $780 and $7800 but not many seem at those prices.

Critics will say these are pretty modest prices, while optimists will say it is encouraging to see any aftermarket sales in the first 3 months of general availability. Many of the new extensions waited much longer to get their first sale.

ps While Sedo and Undeveloped accept them to be sold on their marketplaces, I just checked and see that Afternic do not yet accept listings of ICU.

... or something about creation date and/or arm's length

cownature.icu - creation date: 2018-08-23

Thanks for information. I see that both are registered at Namecheap with privacy on. Is there a way after a Flippa sale to know anything about the buyer/seller (I have never tried to sell on Flippa and searching now could not find a way to look at recent sales, but that may just be my inexperience). Thanks.

Without signing in to Flippa I see 2 different seller IDs and no buyer info. Flippa labels both sellers as having no transaction history and both usernames are suggestive of the same place of origin. One thing is certain, cownature.icu and swimmingpool.icu have a lot in common:

  • registrar
  • creation date
  • aftermarket venue
  • aftermarket seller IDs regional similarity
  • aftermarket seller IDs no transaction history
  • aftermarket listing date
  • aftermarket sales date
  • aftermarket sales price

I enjoy reading your scholarly efforts to analyze the domain market but nothing beats a quick smell test.

I have updated my review of the ICU extension so it now has the most recent data on registrations, abuse, use, etc.

A few key points:
  • ICU now has just over 62,000 registrations and covered by 39 registrars. It is in the top 60 as of today among the ngTLDs. For example, now above BERLIN, GLOBAL, and NEWS in registrations, while near but just below WEBCAM, GURU and GROUP.
  • Country distribution very uneven. USA, UK, China, Seychelles, Spain (in that order) account for most.
  • The pricing for ICU (exact will vary with registrar, NameCheap based for following) have base promotional pricing in the $1 to $2.00 range, first tier premium at abouot $16, next at $78, then $780 and $7800. Full review gives some examples from each premium price level. Very few are in the top two tiers. The premium ONLY applies to the first year, not renewals that are all at standard rates.
  • In terms of use in actual websites, ICU now has 105 sites in Alexa 1M, or about 1 per 600 registrations. This is quite good, especially for such a new extension (e.g. similar to ONLINE and XYZ, but about 4x better than TOP or APP). I know some do not like Alexa, so usual caveats apply. My review has a number of real world sites to get an idea of how it is currently being used.
  • I have tracked Spamhaus abuse data for the past month, although with such a new extension clearly not yet well established. Generally consistent and trending slightly better. The abuse score as of today for ICU is 1.02. This made it slight worse (lower is better) than COM (0.62), XYZ (0.71) and ONLINE (0.47), similar to NET (0.90) and INFO (0.98), and much better than CLUB (2.83), BIZ (3.43) and TOP (5.56), and hugely better than the worst extensions that are the 'free' country code extensions. These all updated today, for some reason CLUB seems way up I notice, may just be a short term statistical fluctuation. There are regularly significant numbers being taken out of the zone file, which may mean that the registry is being proactive re abuse (or maybe it is for some totally unrelated reason).
  • As of now ICU domain names can't be added to Afternic, but there are ICU domains for sale on Sedo, Undeveloped, Flippa (and others). I may quantify how many in a future revision.
  • Two, possibly questionable see above, resales, both just under $200, so far. Of course just 3 months into general availability, would not expect much resale traffic.
  • Registry continue to do a fairly job promoting both use of the extension and premium names available. They do not report to NameBio their premium sales.
The full revised ICU review is at this link. It is part of a series I am (slowly :xf.wink:) doing on domain extensions. The next will be on SPACE but not guaranteeing when it will be release.

Disclosure. Note I do have about a dozen ICU domains in my 250 domain portfolio, so may have bias.

I updated my ICU review to reflect the most current stats. The extension is now up to 75,000 registrations. More impressively, it now has one Alexa 1M website for each 300 registrations (259 sites: data at https://namestat.org/icu), an amazingly high number for a new extension. I know there are issues and ways to distort Alexa, still strong for a ngTLD. Here is link to my updated review. Three aftermarket sales of .icu on NameBio ($128 to $190 range).

ICU got some nice names @Bernard Wright :xf.cool:! I particularly like hope, birds, did, bugs and will! Good luck with them!

Thank you, Bob! I don't know much about SEO, but I presume the keyword-related words might hold unique value for some. If you google "ICU[space]" the suggested autocompletes include a few in my list. I quite like eyewear domain. I played around with it a little. The site is live but I'm too green to know how to develop it further.

I understand peoples' apprehension regarding the ICU gTLD, but I do think there are some unique opportunities to be explored. It's nice to know you share my sentiments. Thanks again.
