If you are buying domains and you say to yourself that you will hold it for a year and then decide to renew, you are buying the WRONG ones.
– Rick Schwartz

One of the great joys of domaining is waking up and seeing the words, Your Domain Has Sold!, in your inbox. There’s nothing better than earning several hundred, or even several thousand, dollars while we’re sleeping. But there’s another, more insidious, process that also occurs while we sleep. It’s the silent cancer that eats away at the money in our pocket and it’s called, domain renewals.

Every day the clock is ticking on the hundreds (or thousands) of domains we own. Renewal fees come due night after night. For every thousand domains in our portfolio the annual renewal cost is about $8,000 per year. That’s $666 per month or about $22 a day. Yikes!

With numbers like that we’ve gotta be careful and make sure our portfolio is a clean, lean selling machine with no dead weight. Otherwise renewal costs will eat our profits faster than an African tapeworm. So how do we avoid that?

He lists all these factors below but he's way off. Most low to mid x,xxxx brandable domains that sell meet all or most of this criteria. So I guess most of my domain sales have been toxic domains. LOL 😀 .

First, know the telltale signs of a toxic domain:
  • No inquiries or offers from end users after two years
  • Rejected by two or more brandable marketplaces
  • A zero Estibot valuation
  • A GoDaddy appraisal under $500
  • No Google traffic
  • No CPC value
  • No prior owners (check it here)
  • Never had a website (check it here)
Those are usually the kind of domains you wanna get out of your system.

Very good article, totally agreed! If you do not have your renewals in check, it is not fun anymore :)

I also have had a few sales that met most of these criteria so I agree it would be wise for each investor to set their own criteria. The fact remains that dropping domains that are unlikely to sell is a must-have skill if you want to be a successful (profitable) domainers. What are the criteria you have @hookbox when it comes to renewing or dropping domains?

Personally, I only have one when it comes to brandable domains and that is: Would I name my business with this name?

Yeah. One needs to be careful with renewals. It kills the joy

The renewal date comes faster than one can imagine. Is a year that short?

Depend "Rejected by two or more brandable marketplaces" not necesary - Rejected by brandable markets and sell for good money.
"No inquiries or offers from end users after two years" sometimes need to wait more 3,4,5 years depend your feelings
About "Domain Renewals: The Silent Killer" - welcome to domaining
I will ad this - to register domain names that renew price not exceed $10 / $12 ...over $ 15 not worth unless are premium

While I agree that you need to factor renewals into all decisions and renew your best names way in advance I disagree on his definition of toxic domains.

If any brandable site or all refuse your name it doesn’t mean the name is no good or won’t sell. I have sold rejected names for XXXX.

You have to know a good name when you see it no matter what the opinions of brandable marketplaces. If you base all your decisions on their evaluations you will never make a big sale on your own like a big boy/girl and will be highly confused because the valuations vary greatly.

When I get a rejection or a ridiculously low pricing on a great name I shrug and say
more money for me when I sell it on my own. 👏

Also no history is better than bad history.

which is the cheapest and reliable domain registrar?

I don't think there's one good answer. I say that partly because prices tend to fluctuate more often (e.g., discounted vs regular prices, quantity, domain extension) than quality of service.

There have been some registrars with extremely poor service track records. I'd work on getting to know which ones those are, and staying as far away as possible from them as I could.

You will probably get a number of different answers. Without trying them out for yourself, there's really no other way (aside from researching/paying attention to feedback/reviews in the NamePros forums) to determine which one is best for you.

For some, multiple registrars are the way to go. I'm in this bunch. I use Epik and NameSilo quite often, so those would be my contributions if you're taking a poll/making a list.

Good Luck!

Thank you. I am crawling through every possible sites but if I find any cheap domain registrar then their other services are not that good.

One thing I can say without a doubt after over 1K sales and a few years in the business is that I am still surprised over which names sell and which names don't.
