Hello everyone!

I thought this would be a perfect addition for this beginners area so that beginners can come here and read this and understand why it's important to check for trademark issues before registering a domain. If some of you could please share your stories / experiences with trademarked domains you may of registered, some words of advice or even just let every one know why this is an important topic that would be great. I feel the newer domainers will have more knowledge and not have to get into trouble with trademarks. This also would provide a central place for new users to get this information. If the moderators could maybe even sticky this thread that would great too. Thanks and I hope this helps someone! :)

I've registered several trademark domain names...because I filed for and registered the trademarks!

Don't have the trademark? Don't register a matching domain name.

Two main sources for cross referencing are USPTO and IPO

I hated doing sales outreach. People call you nasty names.

I'm like, "Wait, I did you a favor giving you a chance to buy it for a low price for my effort, and you only own the rights in your trademark class. Many people own the same name. If someone else registered it, they'd probably sit on it. You should be thanking me."

It's in one ear, and out the other. People offended and don't listen to reason. That's one reason why I stopped doing it. I recommend that if you plan on doing it, just set up a landing page with a BIN.

You can also check trademark247.com to check your domain name for trademarked words or phrases. Hope this helps!

Ok thanks guy, So what happens when one registers a trademark name by mistake. Does he just let it expire?

Yes, it's not a good idea to try to sell or even cotact the trademark owner or it could be viewed thar you registered the domain in "bad faith" with the intention of selling the domain for a profit. Good luck to you!

Using "Ribbit" as a real-life example.

Excluding the international holders, there are at least nine active US entities using this same name at the same time (http://www.wipo.int/branddb/en/). The dictionary meaning is simply the sound of a frog, so how will any of these holders go after the new ribbit(dot)com holder if the word is so common?

For sure I won't go around to call these companies but wait for them to come to me with an offer.
