Should I Forward It Or Develop It? (Premium Domain Name)

Hi Name Pros,

I got lucky and acquired a premium domain name for a product type for only $500 but I am having difficulty deciding what might be the best use for it. Here's my situation; I am currently developing a brand that sells 5 or 6 types of products and each product will have different sizes and/or flavors. For example purposes, lets say its a Hamburger brand. Now, there's many types of hamburgers such as Cheeseburgers, VeggieBurgers, ChiliBurgers, etc and lets say the domain I acquired was Cheeseburgers dot com.

Would you develop the premium domain Cheeseburgers dot com into a Cheeseburger superstore selling other peoples products + yours OR would you 301 forward it to your brands website but directly to that particular products page (E.g., *.com/products/cheeseburgers)

The domain I purchased in an exact match of a type product that gets over 30,000 unique searches globally and 12,000 in the USA alone. Its a VERY popular product/food. I think developing it into a superstore would provide better short term profits but long term 301'ing may build brand recognition. However, my site isnt even launched yet nor any of my products are made. I'm about 8-12 months away from launching my own brand.

Thoughts? Experiences? Opinions? Thanks!

I'm in the same position with a main domain and niche domains within the same market. What I've decided to do is to launch everything on the main domain and then use the niche domains for related articles and so on to funnel traffic to the main domain. I think this will save me on marketing costs for the main domain and has obvious SEO benefits.

Another long term consideration, and this is just my opinion, is if you decide one day to sell the business, it may make things easier if everything is one place.

The risk with the opposite approach, where the niche domains are developed distinctly into their own brands is that inevitably at some point there will be overlap between then and the main domain, resulting in work duplication, extra business costs, brand confusion, and products cannibalizing each other. Companies try to avoid this through mergers, so they can benefit from synergies, where they consolidate their operations as much as possible to save on business costs. This makes me think that my chosen approach above is probably the correct one.

I would suggest the balance solution niche store + powered by brand.

own brand means more works/more money for operation.
301 completely relies only on type in traffic which is very little traffic & visitors will easy forgot about the exact match domain.

Use software like magento that allow you to build a store out of the same database so for operation/business it is still the same place but for marketing wise you can market the niche site individually without heavy investment on setup/operation side.

Also niche store + powered by brand allow you to promote your brand and as the same time capture traffic (various channel of traffic). Imaging with two domains you can get two positions in search engine result pages. If that is position 1 & 2, basically you capture 80~95% of the traffic already instead of only 1 website which maximum capture 70% organic traffic only at position 1. Also with 2 out of 10 position you are limiting your competitors to enter the market as well.

May I provide an example? Lets say this is in regards to burgers and my brand goes by "Joey's" and "Joey's" sells burgers + more. However, I wind up acquring burgers dot com. So I develop a full store for the Joey's domain but only a niche site for burgers (powered by Joey's) focusing only on burgers? If so, and I dont want to actually sell burgers on burgers dot com should I do a "Where to buy" type of outbound link to the Joey's website? And would I include a rel="nofollow" to avoid passing juice or in this particular case i'd want to pass the juice?
