New country name is born: one of Balkan countries is changing its name.

Macedonia, one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, declared independence in 1991. It became a member of the United Nations in 1993, but, as a result of an ongoing dispute with Greece over the use of the name "Macedonia", was admitted under the provisional description the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (sometimes abbreviated as FYROM and FYR Macedonia), a term that was also used by international organizations such as the European Union, the Council of Europe, and NATO.

From the news dated June 13, 2018:

Prime Ministers Tsipras and Zaev say they have agreed on 'Northern Macedonia' as the new name for small Balkan country.

Republic of North Macedonia, or Severna Makedonija in Macedonian was one of three names left on the table since talks began in January. The leadership in Skopje chose it over Gorna (Upper) Macedonia and Nova (New) Macedonia.

"I believe all Greeks can today be proud," Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a five-minute address from Athens on Tuesday night.

"This is a great diplomatic victory and a historic opportunity … not just for our nation but for our entire region. A source of discord that undermined the region's ability to go forward together is ended, and a window of friendship, cooperation, prosperity and mutual growth opens onto the future."

The agreement, he said, cemented Greece's status as a "leading power" in the Balkans and as a "pillar of stability".

His northern counterpart in Skopje hailed the agreement as "historic".

"We have been solving a two-and-a-half decade dispute ... that has been drowning the country," said Zoran Zaev, whose election in December 2016 presented a new opportunity for a solution in the long-running issue.

Zaev added that the deal "will strengthen the Macedonian identity."

From the news dated June 20th:

SKOPJE (Reuters) - The Macedonian parliament formally ratified a landmark name agreement with Greece on Wednesday, paving the way for Skopje’s admission to NATO and the opening of accession talks with the European Union.

Some extra details:

Capital: Skopje
Population: 2,103,721 (2017 estimate)

Comparable countries in the world by population:
Qatar, Slovenia, Bahrain, Latvia

Smaller countries by population:
Estonia, Mauritius, Cyprus, Bhutan, Macao, Luxembourg, Iceland

... Happy regging :)

Posting this in news subforum, as this news should mean more geo domains regged or developed in relation with the "new" country. Mods please move to more appropriate or better subforum if there is one...

I'd rather go for New Macedonia that sounds better with hope. North Macedonia doesn't sound like new born country.

Indeed... but since Greece and independent Macedonia were unable to reach an agreement during 20+ years, it is finally something neutral. "New" Macedonia might imply that Greek region with the same name is an "old" one which might sound negative for some Greek people.

Will be interesting to watch. Why would somebody sell it now is a big question, exact geo country names are always liquid... and the country in question is going to join EU which may make it more known/popular/whatever after some time.

Owned FYRMacedonia.com but the new name i registred few
for the moment is very vague what exact names will be for country . Some publications use North other Northern with "of" without or with "the" or without . Oficial & final decision will take place arround end of june or july 2018 because other country from EU must be agree & recognize the new name that be official:
Republic of North/Northern Macedonia
So anyway i will keep FYRMacedonia.com , but the new are:
TheRepublicNorthernMacedonia.com
RepublicNorthernMacedonia.com
TheRepublicNorthMacedonia.com
RepublicOfNorthernMacedonia.net
RepublicOfNorthernMacedonia.org
RepublicOfNorthernMacedonia.eu
RepublicOfNorthMacedonia.eu
RepublicNorthMacedonia.org
TheRepublicOfNorthMacedonia.eu
RepublicNorthMacedonia.eu
NorthernRepublicOfMacedonia.net

* eu domains very good because country is in Europe & attend to be part of UE

Since the country is not English speaking, it appears that the English translations may and should vary, at least initially. Official name should be in macedonian language, and various sources do report the following: "Severna Makedonija". Longer version: "Republika Severna Makedonija". I guess "Severna Makedonija" should practically prevail. Indeed, for example the country commonly known as Mexico actually has noticeably longer full name "The United Mexican States" (or in Spanish: Estados Unidos Mexicanos).
