I'm not sure if this topic will take off, but I'm genuinely interested to know if other NP members have had their own unique "run-ins" with famous people, celebrities, movie stars, sports figures, royalty :xf.grin:, what have you!

For instance, on another thread I mentioned a bizarre karaoke moment with Mrs. Carol Brady, aka Florence Henderson (if the younger members even know that name from TV Land).

The Rules:

Rule #1: Remember, honesty is the best policy -- so it had to have actually happened!

Rule #2: There has to be an "Up Close and Personal" aspect to your interaction such as a conversation, hand shake, getting an autograph, catching a foul ball or the like. Just being at a concert, for example, probably wouldn't make the cut.

Rule #3: Reality show "stars" and YouTubers don't count! (And never will.)

Okay, take it away then...

Do politicians count....?

A few years back "Kim Mitchell" was doing a concert at a local arena. Just so happen that after the concert, he and his roadie started partying a the bar of the hotel they were staying at. The same bar that I frequented.

Ended up meeting a few roadies while playing pool and was invited to sit and drink with them, Kim Mitchell and some local groupies...

At closing time, went asked for a autograph from Kim Mitchell on a beer coaster!
He left taking 3 groupies to his floor and the roadies partied with the "leftovers" on a lower floor ... No I didn't after hours party, had a earlier morning..

Next afternoon, check the autograph....."Bathtub Farts Kim Mitchell" lol

Politicians, absolutely! I nearly added that "explicitly".

That Kim Mitchell kind of looks like Eddie Van Halen, doesn't he? Guess it's the hair. (Or is it David Lee Roth?)

Okay... maybe not! :xf.laugh:

I met Paris Hilton when she was dating Nick Carter. We were all in the same movie theater together. The movie was Secret Window. Didn't even realize they were in the movie theater until I got up to use the bathroom. Caught them after the movie. Nick Carter was kind enough to get on the phone and say hello to my sister.

Lennox Lewis went to the same school as I did and he was a bit of a jerk.

Eventually my business sponsored him for the Olympics where he took home boxing gold.
We used that in a number of promos.

He went on a few years later to win the Heavy weight boxing title of the world.

Here is a funny story...

In those days I was working in a Mercedes-Benz dealership and Lennox Lewis came back with his entourage after he won gold and he had a tricked out 500sec Mercedes-Benz.

He came in and said.... ya mon (in a thick Jamaican accent for man). Ya mon my a/c no work. I said ok lets go for a ride. During the ride he said see mon a/c no work. I asked him if he remembered me from school and I think he recollected beating me up a few times. :xf.laugh:

Anyways, I asked him what happened to his English accent because he was originally from England and settled in the same city as me in Canada. I said he was always British sounding when we went to school and now he was trying to sound so cool with a Jamaican accent. He says.... no mon I always sounded like this and my a/c still no work.

I pushed his recirculating button and in my best fake Jamaican accent said....

See mon, a/c works...

Funny I don't remember too much after that

Cool story...make me wonder if she had a "toy dog" in her handbag...

Not sure if this counts...but, when I was young (about 10-11ish) my parents sent me to India for summer vacation. I'd grown up in Canada, so they really wanted me to see their homeland, and experience the Indian culture in general. It was my first time, and I went alone. I was to stay with various aunts and uncles over the 3 month period.

One of my uncles is fairly wealthy (chemical business), and he lived in Mumbai or "Bombay", right next to this guy:

For those of you who don't know, his name is Amitabh Bachchan - an absolute Bollywood legend. I can't even think of a Hollywood counterpart to compare him to...they just don't have that lasting quality.

Anyways, as great as he is, my "claim to fame" or experience of him is very small. Minuscule even. And, embarrassingly so...

One day, my aunt told me they were having some friends over for dinner. And, lo and behold, it was Amitabh Bachchan and his good friend (yet another Bollywood legend) Shatrughan Sinha:

Before they came, I couldn't stop thinking about all the questions I was going to ask him, all the conversations we would have, and the relationship we were bound to form. This was it! I was going to make him my best friend, my mentor, and "finally" get my big break in Bollywood!!! :glasses:

...Reality, however, unfolded differently. As soon as they entered the house, I was starstruck. I couldn't even manage to get a "Hello" in. I smiled and nodded to communicate, giggled awkwardly when spoken to, and ran away every chance I got.

The ate, drank, played cards, and made merry, while I hid in the hallways and eavesdropped on them the entire night...

I met Orville Redenbacher at the San Diego airport when I was in the Navy circa 1978. Kept talking about his grandson who runs the company now.

Side note: Airline / union dispute, someone called in a bomb threat. They put us on on a buss to a remote runway, gave us our baggage and made each person open their bags in front of police, with dogs.

I've met Karen Grassle and Charlotte Stewart (most famous for Little House on the Prairie tv show fame.) Someone tried to stop us from approaching and talking to Charlotte but she told them to let us come over and we talked to her for a minute and she signed an autograph. She was very nice and down to Earth.
Also walked by Dean Butler (from the same TV show) another time while he was getting into a vehicle.

Mentionables below:

I was at a festival and walked by Chuck Schumer (NY Senator) and didn't realize it right away. By the time I did he was in a conversation with someone so I just kept walking. I also saw him at a college another time.

Mall Encounters

Saw and walked by Jim Kelly (former NFL QB) at the mall. Also saw Drake Bell (from Nickelodeon) randomly when I was at the mall another time.

Concerts

Was in front row and close enough to have the sweat drip down on me at several shows. One was Scott Weiland during a Stone Temple Pilots concert. Another was KMFDM, where I was so close I actually had to move back because I couldn't see anything except the female vocalist's pants right in front of me lol - and at this same show I was standing next to the vocalist from the opening act when she finished her set. Yet another was a Tool show with Maynard Keenan.

I met the entire band Flyleaf. All were very nice and also down to Earth.

Almosts

I got offered a gig by someone we knew to work for a show that was coming up. The reason was because she couldn't do it and was trying to find a last minute replacement. It was for 30 Seconds to Mars. I was supposed to basically be a sort of driver / assistant for the night. In order to do the job you needed to know the area. I didn't end up doing it but found out later that she took the job after all and ended up driving Jared Leto around town lol.

I have a celebrity connection that actually involves a domain name (which I presumed was what this post was all about).

One day eight years ago or so, I saw that CheechMarin.com was dropping at auction. I was the only bidder. I immediately emailed Cheech's manager and told him I just won the name at auction and that I would like to give it to Cheech for free, as I am a fan.

We immediately completed the transfer to Cheech's lawyer.

Afterward, as a thank you, Cheech's manager emailed me to offer me two free tickets and backstage passes to Cheech and Chong's upcoming show in Ft. Worth, Texas in two weeks. We went, enjoyed the show, and met both Cheech and Chong backstage. Nice folks. I got Cheech to autograph a printout of WHOIS showing his lawyer as the new registrant. He was thankful to have his domain name under his control.

Today, you can see that http://www.CheechMarin.com/ is Cheech's main website and email.

Another Lennox lewis story........

I grew up in Hadley Wood, Barnet, North London - my dad was running a Golf club franchise at the time.

When I was 9 my dad told me Lennox Lewis lived around the corner and told me and my sister (age 7) to go and knock at his door and get an autograph....we duly followed his advice (orders) and promptly made our way there on a Saturday to be greeted with a giant wooden gate with a intercom link.

I rang the buzzer and a man answered (can't remember the accent) and said Mr Lewis was not in, I turned to my sister and said lets go then - my sister being a gobby little thing back then (and now) said he's lying that's him.

All of a sudden the gates started to open, quietly and slowly.......we made our way up to this huge house and he poked his head out of a side door and made a gesture to come over, we went in and on the right was a mini office and he signed 2 pictures of himself in gold pen!! Result!

Still got the autographs to this day :xf.smile:

Hi all,
I / we've registered / acquired domains as a courtesy to their rightful owners (actors / musicians/ politicians / corporations / athletes) and so have traded eMail while effecting transfers.

But face to face, Canadians might know Lloyd (could have been Prime Minister) Axworthy. He stepped on my foot at some "do" … but then (of course, very politely) apologized.

I had a drink with Bryan Adams. His rep brought him around when the first album came out. I've managed marketing events with The Police, Cheap Trick, Sir Bob Geldof… and more… but one bit I like to tell was having Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull) jump from the stage and run right up to ME… only to hand my DATE a glass of champagne…
