Hi Everyone

Looking for some advice on this subject - brand new territory for me!

Yesterday evening, I received an email from a US based attorney, with an attached letter template, advising me that a domain name I bought earlier in the year had in fact been wrongly/illegally transferred from their client's Godaddy account, prior to my acquisition of it. The firm are now investigating the issue with Godaddy.

The letter requested that I make no attempt to sell/modify/delete the domain, or I may face legal action myself - I should point out that I myself am under no investigation, have no part to play in any wrong doing, and am prepared to assist in any shape, form or matter that may take.

I have checked out both the attorney group (Haug Partners, New York) and the client (The Falconwood Group, New York) they represent, and both seem to be legitimate - this assuaged my immediate concern of a potential scam to acquire the domain at no cost.

I can provide more details if necessary, but am looking for some quick advice on this one - I'm thinking to either contact the attorney, or their client directly, and offer the domain back to them at no cost. The domain in question, which I won't reveal here, is probably mid $xxx in value, and I acquired for less than $20, so I'm thinking the goodwill gesture is probably the way to go.

Any thoughts?

Thanks John - I saw this yesterday and have been communicating directly with the OP since. Out of respect to a fellow member, and due to the sensitive nature of this subject, I'm going to close this thread for the time being until the matter is fully resolved.

I'd like to thank everybody who has contributed and offered valuable advice over the last 5 days or so, as well as those who have reached out through DM's to offer their insights - along with the claimant, I am also an innocent party in this matter and the experience has been brand new to me - the NP community's support has been invaluable in aiding my understanding and learning along the way.

I'll open another thread once the matter is fully resolved to share my experience and hopefully add some value to those whom may be affected by something similar in the future.

Any update?

From what I can tell, the domain in question is now for sale by HugeDomains.com for $2,595...

Did the owner (@falconwood) say you could keep it?

Because it appears you listed the domain for sale on nP after this thread was created.
All 2019 renewals, except for Acals.com, which expires 22/11 - I will be renewing if this listing does not sell before the 22nd.

assuming it didn't sell. And you didn't renew it. Hence the HugeDomains ownership.

I'm curious though.. If @falconwood is still trying to get their domain back, how does this additional change of ownership (I assume via expired registrar auction to HugeDomains) complicate the process?

e.g. If a domain is stolen. And the new owner is informed. And decides to do nothing. Not transfer it to the alleged owner. Nor renew it. Then the domain expires. And is picked up at expired auction. Does the original owner have enough legal rights to claw back the domain from the new new owner?

The domain was actually acquired via eBay, where I've purchased a handful of brandables this year from a very reputable eBayer, and domainer in general.

@Netmunch -- Did you ever report the seller to eBay? Given several allegations of stolen domains from the seller (assuming Alejandro or PatyGmar) on various platforms, I think eBay would appreciate the heads up.

Also, would you mind sharing the eBay link for the sale (and/or the seller link?)

Thanks.
