I was wondering how often people promote subdomain possibilities when they promote a domain name.

For example, if you owned (I wish!) currencies(.)com would you point out that the owner would also be able to use crypto(.)currencies(.)com or foreign(.)currencies(.)com.

I recently wrote a blog post on using DNS redirects or subdomains to make effective use of this. Here is the link:

One example I use in the blog post is the name planners(.)top, which can become wedding(.)planners(.)top or financial(.)planners(.)top or career(.)planners(.)top or many other possibilities. Look forward to hearing what people think!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
With the majority of my domain holdings I don't mention them because I think they either don't work or are weak. However, when there is a good fit, I almost always mention possibilities.

I have only once used them myself in a significant way on a website (it is now no longer operational). I had a regional tourism site that I had built and maintained for a number of years. When we wanted to sell our oceanfront cottage in that area I created the subdomain cabin. We sold it ourselves quickly, and the buyer said they had seen us through the website. I am not sure how Google hand subdomains added to a long standing domain website, but we seemed to get traffic right away.

I have a number of times when I did appraisals on NPs mention them if they seem a good fit for the name being considered. Several domain owners have told me they had not thought of that, which is partly why I did the blog post and this poll.

I also consider possibilities when I am looking at possible domain names.

Subdomains are significantly harder to market and brand. Any branding efforts to them automatically goes to branding of root domain instead.
So, unless all the subdomains are some how connected to a common niche, it is not gonna work.
