Last week, I was curious about my old website. In the late nineties, I was giving lessons to one of my piano students. She had her website and had some difficulty with it. She asked me if I knew HTML, I replied, no. Then I got myself an HTML how-to book and began to teach myself how to build websites. It has been a hobby of mine since. Nowadays, I use Dreamweaver, for the most part. But, when I got my first site up, I created the name someinfo.com. It was cool, I put links to favorite sites that I like to visit. It was purely for my own enjoyment. When I went to renew it at the end of the year, I ran in to a snag. Finally, as I made a third attempt to renew it, it had gone past the expiration date. I was shocked to see it wasn't available! But, I compromised and got someinfo.us instead. No biggie. Well, I went to one site, not this one. Turns out someinfo.com is for sale at $4,999. I was blown away. This is a fascinating development and so I joined this to check out the domain broker business.

Hello @Jeff Ellis .. and Welcome to NamePros! :)

One HUGE thing you need to keep in mind is that the "asking" price on some domains has absolutely nothing to do with actual value. Already valuations can vary a great deal from person to person .. but also many times people deliberately put super high prices just to be in a good negotiating position (whether that's a good idea or not is a completely different question beyond the scope of a meet and great thread .. lol).

Long story short .. purely for domain value SomeInfo.com already isn't a strong name (not horrible .. but I'd personally pass on it even at $11 closeout if that tells you anything about the wholesale value). Then keep in mind that the .us is going to be a tiny fraction of the .com value .. as tiny as 1%. Which is about right .. because if someone offered "SomeInfo.us" here in the free giveaway forums of NamePros, I likely wouldn't even bother because I see a virtual zero percent chance of selling it for any price .. so low that it wouldn't be worth the 10 minutes exchanging messages and going through the hassle of transferring / pushing the domain between accounts.

I suggest you take a look at the appraisals forum to get a better idea of some domains perceived values .. more importantly .. look at recent domain sales.

Best of luck to you going forward in domaining if that's a path you're going to take! :)

Welcome to Namepros Jeff. I just want to point out that anyone can list their domains for any price they want, regardless of the domains having any real value.

Someone asked 7.5k for a domain and I offered 500 bucks.
Six months later I was contacted if I still wanted it.

Bingo 500 bucks later I got the domain

Listen to @Ategy.com he knows his stuff (y) (y) (y)

Hey Jeff, welcome to np. Like has been said, what is being asked for isn't necessarily what it's selling for.

Hey there @Jeff Ellis ! Things sure have changed since the 90's, (pre Google days) no more hand coding your websites..now you can use a free "blog" template (Blogger/Wordpress/etc) and get a fairly decent site! Not even going to mention SEO....anyway..

...I compromised and got someinfo.us instead...

SomeInfo, org is vastly superior to SomeInfo.us and that .org is unregistered. Any particular reason you went with .us which names are usually very low or no value.
