You won't get charged, you only get charged when only you placed the backorder or when you win the auction.

I never placed a backorder with GoDaddy so I don't know how they work, all I know is that Dropcatch, Namejet and Pheenix are the best backorder companies out there. If you want to have higher chances of winning the domain you should backorder it with multiple companies because you don't know which one will be the fastest in reserving it.

Don't use GoDaddy! They're backordering system is quite bad
I agree, however I have learned that if the domain is being dropped by GD, and you put in an order for it, it will catch it for you (I presume no one bid on it). I accidentally let a six-letter invented brandable that I had put in a domain marketplace delete recently. On the day the domain was finally deleted from my account I got a notice, and less than three minutes later I got a notice that GD had "grabbed" it for me.

GD has caught three domains for me this way, but did not catch many others. The only redeeming value GD "backorder service" has is if the domain isn't caught, you can enter a new domain name to try to catch on the same "backorder service" purchase. However, if you don't do that eventually—a matter of months—they will remove it altogether; I had to call my GD rep after a chat person told me I couldn't get one back that they had deleted that had not yet caught a domain, yet I had entered a new domain to try to catch several times.

Assuming it wasn't backordered on any other service, sure, GD can catch it. Try competing backorders between SN, DC And GD and then make a determination about the efficacy of GD. Without dropcatching competition, I can hand-reg a dropped domain too ;)

That depend if you can put a lot of money on it or not, avoid every service with public auctions if you dont.
As the more backorder they have for a domain the more power they will put on it, but the price in public auctions could be higher than with services without public auctions.
