It amazes me how these "huge" gtld sales always seem to stem from the registries....

How can you tell if it was a direct sale from the registry?

It's written in the article

A vacation rental company has paid $500,300 to acquire the domain name vacation.rentals from registry Donuts in an all-cash transaction

not surprising at all - as the registries hold back the premium names to sell themselves.

I wish someone would pay 500k for

deluxe.rentals

Could have started their own registry.

Surpasses home.loans by 300 bucks as the largest gTLD sale

Congrats to the buyer and registry.

This reminds me of the Home.Loans sale... Just another buyer that has no idea what they're doing...

Just imagine the traffic they'll be losing to VacationRentals.com. HomeAway, Inc must be jumping up and down with glee.

hmm, so sale actually happened 4 months ago, and the buyer is now emulating the business model that "Vacationrentals.com" abandoned.

Maybe guys at donuts agreed to guarantee at least his monies worth in unpaid advertising or his money back.

they all agree the extra $300 against the loans sale was no coincidence. Perhaps they should have made it $500,500 and 50 cents for the picture line

Wish there were more of those!

"rentals" is a big keyword, I am always shocked when people let a good "rental" / "rentals" domain sell for cheap.

Congratulations to the buyer on being able to toss around $500k.

Blimey - Who woke you up (26 posts in eleven years) ;)

but your right - if the domain sales figure press brings-in around another 50,000 uniques that's the money end taken care of. Hence the 4 months since launch to announcement

Thw buyer said he had wanted the domain for years and once it became available, he went for it and contacted donuts registry.

Allegedly per the buyer, Donuts wanted more. lol I can only imagine.

Has to be some sort of publicity stunt with the added $300, although there are probably smarter ways to spend that money on marketing lol.

Congratulations to buyer and Donuts on a completed deal.

Congrats to HomeAway and VacationRentals.com. Nothing like a competitor working hard to send you some free traffic.

agree with your assessment
a short-sighted investment

Always amazes me when businesses can spend half a million on a domain name, but then their website looks like they downloaded a free template.

A very similar scenario indeed.

Maybe $100,000 would have been good purchase.
