I was looking for new domains to register and found out that PHILIPS is using a new gTLD domain
to redirect it to their lighting business.

Here is the domain name :

Led.Lighting - really good quality exact match new gTLD!!

It is good to see that major companies like Philips are adopting to new gTLDs.

I hope they will be using it as their main website when the new gTLDs gain more awareness by the random Joe on the street.

Thanks for sharing. An excellent use of a perfectly matched gTLD.

I don't actually think this is good marketing for new gtlds, when they're just used to forward to a .com, I think it could actually hurt.

And I can't imagine them using that as their main site when they're already using the branded and well known Philips.com

After reading this comment I laughed so hard.... my chest "actually hurts"

I have to agree with @JB Lions, I think redirects are not very beneficial because they reinforce the idea that nTLDs are not for serious projects and thus do not deserve a stand-alone website. On the other hand, if they advertise the URLs it's positive. So we can look at it like a half-full (or empty) glass. Otherwise it's another defensive reg.

I don't think it is a defensive reg.

Led Lighting is a niche in lighting industry and PHILIPS own the domain as a major player in that area.
Giving them competitive advantage against their competitors.

But I think you are right about seeing the glass half full or empty. Probably people who have never invested in new gTLDs will see the glass empty while new gTLD investors will see it full.

Actually they are not forwarding it to "Philips.com"

It is redirected to "Lighting.Philips.com"

The main banner on that site is about Led Lighting

so "Led.Lighting" is great idea for the company imo.

It is easier to remember comparing to "Lighting.Philips.com"

It is shorter than "Lighting.Philips.com" and most importantly it is a category killer domain.

I respect your thoughts but this time saying it could actually hurt new gTLDs didn't make any sense to me.

Saying that is like, you don't even see the glass. While we see it full and others empty.

Kate understood what I was getting at. You started a thread about a major company using a new gtld. But they're just using it as a forwarder to a .com. That's not a big deal and not a good look for new gtlds. It would be major news if they gave up their already established .com for a new gltd. But it's just a forwarder. I doubt there will be any type in traffic. Maybe they think if they even get a handful it might be worth the price. I wouldn't market that url in anyway, when they could just market the .com and further build/enforce the brand.

This is a great example that a large company often are using multiple domains. First the main one, then other ones for divisions, products, segments, campaigns and re-directs.

Even a tiny company like mine is built around three domains, depending on the segment.

Exactly, and this is just another defensive domain purchase that needs to forward to somewhere, so Philips sends it to their Lighting department. That means less than nothing as even small companies do this and forward multiple domains they have in stock just to create even a little more traffic.

What would actually mean something is if Philips changed their main lighting division site to Led.Lighting and used the .COM as the forwarder.

That's why the Sixt example used above is far better, as they are actually using sixt.global as their primary corporate address. Now that means something.

As an aside, I recently checked out a few of those "Corporations Adopt New GTLDs" articles, where companies actually changed over their corporate websites to a nGTLD and as of 2018, virtually all of them had switched back to a .COM.

I'm not some "King Crony" who's heavily invested in the extension and use every opportunity to promote it like a religion, but the evidence was pretty damning.

But this is a bit different, and obviously Philips Lighting is trying to slowly build a new Signify brand name and get out from under the yoke of their Royal Philips licensing fees:

The company will continue to use the Philips brand, the most trusted lighting brand in the world, under the existing licensing agreement with Royal Philips.

Sure. Many new gTLDs are being re-directed to a .com. There are also (many less) companies doing the opposite. Like this one for example: www.dxc.com

As a domainer, I am happy whatever extension I can sell to a company. The profit is what matters. Personally I have sold more new gTLDs than .com names to companies, since 2014, but we all work in different ways.

I have zero ".Lighting " domain in my portfolio.

Are you a new basher in the forum or a returning one?

I am sharing some news which I found out while searching for new domains to reg. and you guys like : He is promoting or marketing new gTLDs in every opportunity he got.

Just stay away from the new gTLD forum on namePros if you can't take to see any new gTLD related posts.

Cause this section of the forum is only about gTLDs and I am trying to contribute the community by providing this type of information. I am not affiliate to any of the new gTLD registry or what so ever.

You do realize that "King" stands for right? .COM.

I am simply stating that I don't have a horse in this race and if every company wants to buy a new gTLD and sell their .COM, then more power to them, but the evidence suggests the exact opposite.

And BTW, this entire thread relates to branding and not domain sales in way.

Just stay away from the new gTLD forum on namePros if you can't take to see any new gTLD related posts.

And as for the "stay away from the forum" comment, this was posted in the gTLD section, which obviously includes the original gTLDs of .COM, .NET and .ORG and is confirmed in by Namespro:

Talk about generic top-level domains: unsponsored gTLDs (.com, .net, .org)
