I have been working on some research in another thread on Where Won Godaddy Auctions End up, and this got me curious. What does the entire landscape of the .com zone file look like?
First off, I am focusing on Landers. (domains that resolve to a for sale page at a known service)
To me, the results are staggering... I am still working on researching to verify a few things. (more info below)
Total Domains - 132,041,676
Landed Domains - 9,889,783 (at service with over 25k names) - about 7.5%
This research was done by running the .com zone file through a program and identifying known nameservers. Please understand that this method is not 100% accurate, but overall produces a reliable representation.
HugeDomains number was so large I had to take a step back and make sure these statistics were correct. Their website states "over 200,000 names." When I add up the totals on their category page I get 658,196. So then I turned to Google. How many for sale pages do they have indexed?
I performed this exact search (if you want to reproduce): site:hugedomains.com "is for sale ("
Last night, and on another PC this morning I am getting 3.7 million results.
This morning on my PC I am only showing 1.34 million results.
Slightly odd google results there, but still with 3.7 million for sale pages reported indexed in google - I feel pretty confident the 3.1 million statistic above.
The only other question mark in these statistics is New Ventures Corp. They do not have an internet presence to speak of or way for me to confirm these numbers - so I will let you in on my methodology. It appears as if Netsol/Web.com/Register.com will warehouse expiring domains and these domains have their nameservers changed to ztomy.com. I could not find any other service using these nameservers and only complaints on google of "domain hijacking" against the ztomy. I am decently confident that names parked at these nameservers all all NewVentures domains - but please anyone correct me if this isn't the case.
Here are the actual statistics that produced the graph:
HugeDomains - 3,114,263 - 31.09%
BuyDomains - 947,823 - 9.46%
Sedo - 928,229 - 9.27%
CashParking - 804,178 - 8.03%
Uniregistry - 673,570 - 6.72%
New Ventures - 655,881 - 6.55%
InternetTraffic - 615,720 - 6.15%
NameFind - 608,008 - 6.07%
Above - 409,615 - 4.09%
DomainMarket - 310,598 - 3.10%
Afternic - 241,606 - 2.41%
Bodis - 220,361 - 2.20%
Efty - 126,614 - 1.26%
Undeveloped - 83,026 - 0.83%
Vodoo - 71,802 - 0.72%
Brandbucket - 47,204 - 0.47%
Brandroot - 17,313 - 0.17% (not included)
Flippa - 12,661 - 0.13% (not included)
Brandpa - 1,311 - 0.01% (not included)
Let me know if there are any landing services or companies that you think are missing in the list.
