Hi All,

I picked up this set of four domains, given their synergy to the travel and cruise industry I'm hopping they will carry some serious value.

Looking for your opinions on their valuation in USD

cruise.cymru and also (cruise in welsh) mordeithio.cymru

travel.cymru and also (travel in welsh) teithio.cymru

Thanks heaps

Hello @mirecart,

I do not see any value in either because of the extension.

Good luck!

Hey,

First I hear of this domain extension! After some Googling I realized it has to do with Whales.
The pool of users is very small too.

I personally do not see these domains going for more than XXX each if you find the right buyer. Even then you have to be lucky.

Would like to see other opinions.

Good luck !

.cymru is welsh version of .wales and with over 500,000 Welsh speaking people in Wales. I know its a niche, but I thought by acquiring both the English and Welsh translations that may increase their value.

Dw’i hoffi Cymraeg!

I’ve had some lessons but that’s about the limit of my Welsh, which is far more than most people know.

I think those Welsh domains are fantastic but as an investment, they are very high risk with little profit, if any. The fact people don't know the word Cymru and confuse Wales with Whales just shows how little demand there is. My guess is most are American which as a general rule tends to mean little knowledge of the world outside their own country.

The language is spoken by a large minority but those that are going to visit probably won’t earn enough in profit for a company to justify the cost of the domain, I think .wales is lower risk but not much lower. The number of people learning Welsh is growing, so maybe you should just sit on it for a few years.

I think your best bet is to create SEO optimised websites with a few original articles in English and Welsh (and maybe in Chinese) and on the homepage you have three featured images, each one linking to search results or webpage for a real travel agency or travel comparison site for holidays in North Wales (where Welsh is spoken most widely, plus it’s an amazing holiday destination). Trivago offer an affiliate opportunity to make some money. Also offer free publicity on the site to the Welsh Tourist Board. The travel agencies won’t want the competition taking their business, so after you've got some history of attracting attention to the site, send them a friendly email with an offer to rent exclusive use of the featured section plus a banner ad, or to buy the domain for double the registration price, I doubt you'll get much more. You should be able to use Google Analytics to see where most visitors come from and whether the volume is growing, maybe there are thousands in China starting to take an interest.

I meant Wales, sorry....
I looked at some registrars and they do not have this new gtld
It looks like NameCheap does...

I don't see value either, because:
  • no aftermarket
  • limited audience: approx 3M people if you count the whole of Wales but your own count of actual speakers is just 500K
  • I am not a fan of geoTLDs because they compete against strong national extensions, in this case (.co).uk, imo they are doomed
  • on top of that .cymru also competes with .wales... seriously those overlapping TLDs are a dilemma for end users, of course the best way to solve the conundrum is to avoid it
Speaking of .wales, Namebio has only one recorded sale:
enjoy.wales 876 USD 2015-03-06 Sedo

Data from ntldstats.com:
.wales has 13,646 domains while .cymru has 7,561
So the English version seems to be more 'popular', assuming pricing and conditions are identical.

It's the kind of domain that you develop, but don't expect to resell.
For a travel portal, travel.cymru would be terrific. In fact, I would have expected this name to be in the hands of the official tourist board for Wales if there is one. But owning the .wales counterpart would then be desirable.

I hand reg contact.cymru when I first started a few months ago and will not be renewing it. As stated above not a good enough re sell market and better alternative extensions out there.
