With the revamped website, Dynadot has also changed the procedure to unlock a domain and obtain it's auth code. I'll outline the old and the new process below:

Old Process:
If you wanted to unlock and obtain the auth code for an expired domain, you do the following:
1. Contact support to remove the expired flag and then unlock the domain yourself (or Support can also unlock the domain for you)
2. View the domain details page to get the auth code

New Process
1. Visit the domain page and request for unlocking the domain
2. Wait for 5 days while Dynadot "processes" your request to unlock the domain
3. Obtain auth codes
4. Initiate transfer and hope it goes through fine

I absolutely do not understand why @Dynadot would make it so difficult to unlock the domain. Obviously, there isn't a technical requirement or a policy restriction. This is all their own doing. And in making this change, they're now worse than Network solutions who have a 3 day waiting period for auth codes (To be clear, network solutions has a 3 day waiting period for auth codes for all domains and not just expired domains. Dynadot has a waiting period of 5 days for expired domains only, as of right now).

In my opinion, this is a highly retrograde move and requires that you unlock and request for auth code at least 5 days in advance of the last day of the RGP. Highly regressive change that just does not make sense.

I don’t get it. I just bought some names and can lock and unlock myself easily. When unlocked an auth code is right there automatically.

This change applies to "Expired Names" only!

Tagging @Dynadot, they might know the reason.

I'm considering to move my 250 domains to dynadot.com slowly because I can opt in for afternic.com premium listing unlike uniregistry.com

If they wanted to make our job so complex then better to stay away!

We wanted to move the unlock process back to the customers, rather than the old procedure, where they had to email us for unlocking (or rather, allowing you the ability to unlock) expired domains.

That is a good move but why the unnecessary 5 day delay? You and I both know that there is no regulatory/policy reason for this artificial delay. This is extremely onerous and anti-user

@Dynadot Can you please change this back and remove the unnecessary 5 day waiting period? If not, can you please provide the rationale for this delay period?

@Dynadot - would love an answer here : smile :

Tested this myself. Expired domain, was on day 31 and when added renewal to cart had the additional $10 late renewal fee. Asked chat to waive the fee, they said no. Did the unlock in control panel and saw the 5 day wait, then told them to manually unlock to allow transfer away and they "made an exception" and removed the Expired Flag. Was then able to unlock and get Auth Code and begin transfer.

The correct language to use is "Remove the Expired Flag" once they do that, you can unlock immediately.

Still a hassle to have to contact support for something we should be able to do without the artificial delay.

This is not an exception.
All registrars have no any rights to block the transfer-outs within AGP (up to 45 days).

*UPDATE*

Dynadot got rid of the 5 day Expired Domain unlock button. Now you simply contact Support and they will remove the expired flag immediately. You still then have to Unlock the domains yourself in control panel.

They did some right then in chat (was logged in before connecting with chat).

Next day chat was closed, so tested more domains by filling out the "Send An Email" form https://www.dynadot.com/community/about/contact.html
Entered my email as the one that matched my account, they emailed me within a day and expired flags were removed.

UNX:
Unlock Request button is gone, please unlock my domains for transfer away

Dynadot Support Team:
> Hello,

> Yes, the option was removed from within Dynadot account. Now if you want to unlock a domain after it expires, please let us know via email and we'll remove the expired flags manually. It's done for your below domains so you can unlock them now.
