It's everywhere. The Eye of Speculation constantly scanning, monitoring, filtering and, registering. Reminds me of those futuristic tech movies a la "eye in the sky" where you'll see a room full of computer or television monitors with rows and rows of streaming data or live video feeds.

Domaining is full of speculative purchases, either fresh hand-registrations or aftermarket purchases. Call them smart investments or fads, these instincts can be rewarding if you are quick enough to grab it before it becomes a thing. On the flipside, domainers stand to lose hundreds if not thousands of dollars jumping on the Titanic heading towards that iceburg.

How good is your Eye of Speculation? Got a quick trigger-finger? Has it paid off, or is the name still sitting in your library of "could be's" and "what if's"? I've not been quick on the trigger. Then again, I'm not an impulsive buyer. I will generally wait a day on cheap investments, and upwards of a week to a month on more costly ones. Just so I know I have my head on straight. Not the best method for being ahead of the game, though.

Where does one monitor emerging trends and waves of the future for the next Big Keyword in domaining? There's the obvious spots, of course. Your favorite personality on Twitter perhaps, or one of your best reads, a tech or science magazine or online site maybe. Perhaps, like me, you have a couple places that right there in front of everyone, but missed by everyone as well, because they are so obvious.

So the Eye of Speculation is everywhere. If it's not you or me, it'll be someone else, and it'll act quick. Something rarely goes unnoticed for more than a day before it registered. Ultimately, just as trying to hand-register a dropped name before it goes to a drop-catch service, getting yourself that brand-new term before anyone else will prove almost impossible.

Covfefe.com May 31, 2017. Hand-regged the same day it was discovered. Tweeted out by Trump shortly after midnight "Despite the negative press covfefe", the tweet was deleted shortly after, but not quick enough for a domainer to catch wind of it. This isn't even a real word, but it became huge overnight.

InclusionRider.com March 5, 2018. Hand-regged the following day it was discovered. I probably could have taken this one, but sat on it too long. Watching the Academy Awards the previous evening, Best Actress winner Frances McDormand gave her (slightly wacky) speech, and ended with "I have two words for you: inclusion rider." I sat there humming and hawing to check the domain, but decided to wait till the next day. Too late.

Trunkification.com Well, this one's still available to register. So have a go at it, if you like! I won't mention exactly where I saw it, but heres an image, and will say it was during a new commercial just aired this week. Is the name good? Who knows. Would anyone have thought the word "planked" or "selfie" would became a thing a few years back?

I read Trunkification and converted it to Trumpification in my mind. But the .com seems to have been caught by DropCatch on 01-27-2018. So I checked Archive.org, which didn't have any prior record. Not surprisingly.

Agreed- assume you're refering to trunkification.

Funny I thought the same with that word..
Most of these spinoff's from the original keyword will just sit there unused for years until they fade into obscurity.

Funny. I thought of that too. I don't think I was actually going to register it. But I was kinda shocked that it was caught by DropCatch just about 6 weeks ago. Which was why I posted, It means that at least it has had two owners. I wasn't interested in doing any further research on it :)
