Hey NP,

Does anyone know why any of the below domains would be worth so much? Why would anyone even register these? Would appreciate any insight...

Essentially the XN-- prefix is a code to the browser to convert to non standard text .. all sorts of international character subsets exist. Including emojis. Do a search of IDN (short for International Domain Names I'm pretty sure).

Be careful of these .. most do not hold any value aside from a few rare exceptions.

Also tricky is that some of the resulting characters can look identical to traditional English/Latin based letters. From time to time you'll see a domain like "Hello.com" for sale for $50 .. obviously sometimes that's because the listing itself is fraudulent .. but on occasion it's because the "o" (or another letter), isn't actually the letter it appears to be, So if someone types in the domain as it appears (with the "o" for example), they would not go to that site, but simply to Hello.com.

It seems like a total nightmare of a mess .. but the reality is that these domains are the way they are because of keyboard limitations in more complex languages (like Chinese I'm thinking .. as well as all the languages with accents and dots over regular letters). They are a necessary evil to have a domain system that works for everyone around the world (pretty much the entire point of the internet).

If you are new to domaining .. then I most definitely recommend staying away from them. You've pulled a few decent sales .. but the truth is that for the colossal number of possible XN-- variations out there, there are very few sales.

Thanks a lot for that explanation. Will take your advice and stay away from those IDNs for now.

On a side note - The sales I posted above are not mine, just a few I came across on namebio and wasn't sure what that was about.

I call it ~~IDNs~~ "scam" domains

To be fair I have sold some IDNs and even asked one of the buyers if he knew what it was and he sure did and still wanted it and paid promptly. And these weren't the IDNs that necessarily look like the real word and indistinguishable.

But on the other side of it if someone is selling them purely to fool people then yeah that's a bad thing in the end.

They all are IDNs & they were got sold because people are to fool.

These are IDNs (International Domain Names) and they do have value if you know about them well and they exist because to enable foreign letters and characters (for non-english speaking people) to be typed in their own languages (like Japanese, Chinese, etc.).
