It's quite hilarious to see people pushing domains for lower than reg fee.. sheer waste of time, money and energy...Maybe it's better to play this crap shoot as all or nothing game.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The vast majority of domainers will lose money or break even.

Yes! I invested $1200 about a month back and can sense that it's gone down the drain..still have about 11 months to go ...let's see if the gamble pays off...will not make the mistake of renewing in the hope of a golden ticket.

Good idea to cancel those auto renewals if you haven't already. For what it's worth, no successful domainer hasn't wasted money on hand regs at some point.

Once you know what really sells and is quality, forget hand regs and go for $200-500(?) domains on the drop/ in auction. Your downside is limited if you need to sell back into reseller market in case you don't find the end user (or they don't find you).

Good luck

That's a good way to look at picking up drops vs. doing hand regs. At the same time not all drops will be liquid in a year, not that that is any sort of a revelation. Pokeman, VR, holo, etc. Still have to determine what is worthy and relevant. Some will always be, some won't.

don't forget the most importnat part.. which is a long learning curve. if you expect quick results, it is not for you. and learning curves almost always come at price (your loss). then if you keep at it, and learn a lot, you make up what you lost with yoru new knowledge and sales.. and then it should be upward profits from there.

I think the #1 mistake of newbies is to think domaining is easy and quick money. so its definitely not some random quick all or nothing thing. because there is (usually) a very long and expensive learning curve. like with many things in life. especially domaining imo.

the miracle stage happens when you are at a point where you can look back at your self some years or months back and say.. oh my god.. was that realy me who bought these worthless domains? was it really me who regged these worthless domains? was it really me who posted these lamebutt namepros posts (I am not really talking about yours here).

thats when you know you have evolved into a domainer

mahahhhaah.

cheers
all the best.

Yes, its all or nothing game, but sometime you gotta sell for lower than reg fee the domains you want to liquidate, and its better to recover a few bucks than nothing at all...

I thought the same while I had a dozen of domains. But if you have hundreds of domains about to expire, with no hope to sell them for substantial amount, then several hundred times several dollars means a thousand dollars, doesn't it?

What beats me is that estibot values settlement advance loans.com at $1600 and most importantly Advertisers pay up to $45 per click to advertise under settlement advance loans but still i don't see people lapping it up..what am i missing?

"Domaining - All or Nothing Game"

I am of a different opinion. Its serious work/business for me.

Also, there is always a new boat coming. Just look at recent crypto name sales.

I have a name portfolio which fits to my renewal budget. This is giving me the holding power, the ability to reject offers or counter them. I see domaining as a marathon. This is my philosophy now. The secret is to trust the right names in a long run. Imo...

I love optimists but the hard fact is some things just don't add up..for example i was looking up at this island name skye and see the estibot value at 300k and see the owner holding it since 2001, don't see a real world value at that price..wonder what the reseller price would be for this domain? this would still fall in the quality domain category and he would surely be in plus at any point in time but i just hope most of us are not living in denial ..i believe the vesting period should be no more than 12 months max

Are people actually typing in the browser "settlement advance loans dot com"? Probably not.

Would a company name itself "settlement advance loans dot com"? Probably not.

So why would anyone pay for it?

It depends the name. I follow a specific project. The holding time varies from name to name. But the plan and the goal doesn't change. Many names need 2 or more renewals to get a good offer. The time pressure is on buyer's side. That's my goal.

Asking 300k for Skye.com wouldn't be crazy. Closing anywhere north of 50k would be fine.

I beg to disagree on this..It's a direct type in and the name is a symbol to the business without any ambiguity...lets see how things play out..

Indeed it looks like a waste of time, domainers definitely do not value their time like they should. However there may be other reasons. For example newcomers may want to build a TR (trader rating) and reputation, or simply liquidate names they won't renew in order to get accustomed with transfer procedures. It's just getting one's feet wet. So why not as long as you quickly move up the ladder :)

PS: I hope you are not taking automated appraisals seriously.

Request someone to explain me the missing link...

Hi Anjani,

You're not alone. We all buy domain names that we think are good for one reason or another and sometimes later find out that they have little or no value -- but we're not sure why. I'm going through and dropping domain names like this that I purchased years ago.

And it can be frustrating knowing when to trust an automated valuation tool, when it's valuation is high or low, and -- more importantly -- which underlying data might be off leading to the high or low valuation.

Your question seems simple enough, but it's answer is complex to explain. So I put together a video that shows you exactly why, including which tools I use when evaluating this type of domain name.

I hope it's helpful to you. I wish you the best going forward with your investing.

Best,
Michael
