Hi folks,

I've been lurking here for a few weeks now and have learned a lot from all of your posts - a sincere thank you to all of you.

My initial investment in domains is going to be small - mid-$xxx - and it seems like bargain/low-stakes flipping is the best way to get a relatively diverse portfolio going early on. I see a lot on here about doing big sales, but not as much about doing smaller flips, e.g buy for $20, sell for $100.

I'm wondering what strategies have worked best for those with experience in this price range. I've read a bit about geo+service with an outbound sales strategy being effective, but am just looking to learn as much as I can about different viable strategies in this price range. I'm open to direct advice and existing resources.

Thank you!

Hi @CL G and welcome to NP!

Yeah, I agree that that's a good way to get your feet wet without investing too much.

You can indeed find names in the deleted lists that could be worth $100-$300 to end users if you're willing to spend a good chunk of time doing outbound marketing. They key is to be somewhat selective, and to do your research to make sure there are a lot of potential end users for your names. If you pick the right ones, even domains with a length of 20+ characters can have value to buyers.

Following past sales of longtime members here like @Federer and @infosec3 can be a good place to start, just to give you an idea of the types of names to look for. Geo service/product names can be good, and I've personally had some decent success in selling exact match product and service domains for low to high $XXX.

One important component of getting started this way will be to have a good outbound marketing routine, which includes getting good at finding the right people to contact within each company you approach. You`ll want to make sure your emails are clear and concise, and it`s a good idea to have each of your domains pointing to professional looking landing pages.

Thanks for the helpful reply. Would you say that the free Sedo landing page is adequate for this purpose, or is there a better service, or would it be most worthwhile to build one myself?

Yeah, Sedo is good. Afternic and Uniregistry have good landing pages as well. Just remember if you set a BIN on one of those, that you should account for their commissions in the price of your domain.

You should check out Undeveloped too

Additional question for the thread:

At this price point, would you say that domain age is an important consideration? Or simply a plus?

Definitely. I'm a beginner too and have my domains on Sedo for 5 months without any action. Have them on undeveloped with landing page for a few weeks and just received my 1st offer ($120 for a $6 .in handreg.. I've rejected tho.)

Personally, I would develop my own site. You may not get the "traffic" at first but if you are patient and put in the effort (finding a good script (or coding yourself or hiring a "coder) and using Social media), you should start getting traffic!

I figured the money that I paid out in the past (commisions especially) would have paid for hosting and advertising (Facebook/Adwords/etc) for my sites ...
Anyway, just my opinion..

Thanks @briguy . In this case would you just build a single site and redirect all of your For Sale domains to it?

Exactly, what I am doing...also using social media also (Google+, Facebook page etc) especially good if you have a few followers!
One more thing, currently, I am targeting a particular niche so that those people interested in that niche are who I am targeting..

That's exactly what I do and it works well. I also use Twitter regularly which is now up to around 400 followers. A large chuck of traffic comes from there daily.

You've got me interested in this, so how profitable is advertising, and is it worth it?

Yeah, I have also thought the same and started to build my own site a month before.

I would have accepted the offer with little bargain, reason is look at percentage profit. There is many good name always available to hand reg if you are good at research. By $120 you would have found and hand reg 10 more good names and also would have saved $20 .
