Mycroft recently raised a $1.75 million round that will help the Kansas City-based artificial intelligence startup accelerate hiring plans and corporate partnerships. The seed round exceeded the firm’s goal by more than $1 million, Montgomery said.

Meet Asia’s first accelerator for AI startups, founded by a Techstars London director
ZEROTH.AI
jumpstart-article-raymond-yip.jpg

With the growing number of accelerator programs springing up in Hong Kong and all over the region, startups now have a slew of choices. While the likes of YC, 500 Startups and Techstars that continue to set the gold standard for seed stage accelerators globally, local programs also have much to offer. A few years ago, I had the privilege of going through 500 Startups. Soon after that, I acted as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Swire Properties’ Blueprint Accelerator and most recently, I went through Zeroth.AI, Asia’s first accelerator focused on Artificial Intelligence. The latter of which was with my second startup, Designjar, an end-to-end online advertising platform for Asia.

Snips brings its privacy-focused voice assistant to cars

French startup Snips is announcing two things for its voice assistant SDK. First, the company is showing off an interesting use case in Nuremberg with a Snips-powered voice assistant in a car. Second, you can now build voice assistants in German.

Snips isn’t technically competing with Alexa Voice Service or Google Assistant SDK as they’re not designed the same way. Snips lets you build a voice assistant that runs locally. While many hackers have been playing around with the SDK, Snips eventually wants to convince manufacturers that they should embed a Snips-powered assistant instead of Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Baker McKenzie has advised SAP, the German software giant which specializes in software and services for businesses, in the context of its acquisition of the start-up recast.AI

SAP-Logo.svg.png
This transaction will allow SAP to complete its machine learning service offering and is part of the €2 billion investment plan to promote innovation in France which was launched by the software publisher in January 2018.

Recast.ai is a collaborative development platform for chatbots founded in 2015 by three young graduates from the school “42” (Jasmine Anteunis, Julien Blancher and Paul Renvoisé) and the French entrepreneur Patrick Joubert. Located at the Microsoft incubator “Station F”, the start-up designs all the development steps of an intelligent agent project, from modelling conversational flows to the deployment of the bot, via its integration in instant messaging (Messenger, Skype, Slack). Its chatbot programming activity for large corporates enabled it to triple its annual turnover in 2017 to around €3 million.

TurboPatent aims to improve the patent process with new artificial intelligence products
TurboPatent, which raised $1.4 million in funding earlier this year, focuses on corporations and law firms, automating tasks like formatting or document preparation, for example, freeing up people to work on more complex, high-value work. The service is designed to cut costs, save time and lead to more accurate patent documentation.

The new products are called RoboReview and RapidResponse. RoboReview uses AI and predictive analytics to automatically analyze and review draft patent applications. The company says this will reduce to seconds a process that can normally take several people multiple days to complete. RapidResponse helps speed up office actions, written correspondence between an applicant and patent examiner during the application process.

A Decentralized Data Marketplace
It’s hard to imagine what the future will look like but we can look at the processes we have adopted over the last 10 years to get a picture of what it might hold. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning have become essential tools to make our day to day lives run a little smoother.

The data we give to companies for free without even realising, helps to create a clear picture for machines to calculate a required output. From a simple purchase on Amazon, our data is collected into specific data sets and held as a preference for the next time you visit their page. Or for the next customer that purchases the item, the data collected from previous customers helps Amazon to recommend items which are usually bought along with it.

We are moving into an age in which Artificial Intelligence and machine learning processes help to make our decisions for us. It’s fascinating to think how far AI and Machine learning can take our civilisation but there are two key flaws in the system today. If every piece of data created by Man or Machine was correlated into one place, for all intelligence to use, our processes would become even more efficient and allow our progress as a society to evolve faster. Also the data that is used to ultimately create profit, isn’t producing revenue for the creators of it.

Bloomsbury.AI adds £1.4m from Fly Ventures & IQ Capital Partners
We've started off by building an Artificial Intelligence that reads text documents and answers questions about their contents (called Cape). You can use Cape on your own documents or website, so that users of your knowledge can get immediate answers to their questions. We're going to use what we learn from this version to improve our AI, so that it can answer more questions - even ones that require elements of reasoning and synthesis. Eventually we want to be able to answer any question that requires reading better than a human.

Pony.ai launches a self-driving ride-hailing fleet for public use in China

Autonomous driving technology startup Pony.ai has become the first company to operate an autonomous ride-hailing service on public roads for public users in China. The company, just over a year-old, recently raised $112 million in a Series A round to help it accelerate its efforts, and its fleet is running a nearly two-mile route in Nansha, Guangzhou, where its China HQ is located.

As you might expect, the autonomous ride hailing service currently covers a very specific, relatively small bounded area, but it’s still an impressive rollout for a company that began its testing in the designated area just over three months prior to the public soft. launch. The testing has included inclement weather scenario and unexpected traffic scenarios caused by human drivers, according to Pony.ai and that’s lead to rapid enhancements in the startup’s autonomous driving technology.
