Problems, Bugs and Fixes at Afternic - Report Problems Here

I suggest a new thread titled Problems, Bugs and Fixes at Afternic - Report Problems Here. Then we can all list our issues so Afternic have to fix them. These Afternic probs have been repeatedly flagged up across numerous threads on here over a period of time, including the need for 2FA. Godaddy own Afternic and have the resources and motivation to fix it - this risky mess is unacceptable and reflects badly on their brand.

For info, Afternic keep reverting some of my domains to "In Review" status for no reason, and I only know that if I log in there to check on them. Until I then ask support to take them out of Review they are not listed for sale and will not sell at Afternic.

@Joe Styler When can we expect Godaddy to take action on Afternic, including implementing 2FA?

@Joe Styler - via email I can let you know for which domains exactly this has been happening lately in my account.

1) I am having to send in a support ticket every time I set a new price BIN/Floor on a domain, to kickstart the Fast Transfer process. Then within a day or two I get an email from AN that they have "reinitiated opt-in for the domain," followed later by the emails from AN and my registrar DynaDot prompting me to go to my DD account and click to enable the Afternic Fast Transfer. In other words, this process is not happening automatically lately.

2) Another issue is that twice now this year, with domains of mine that have sold at Afternic, I have had to push them manually at DynaDot even though Fast Transfer to AN has already been set and ready.

So the Fast Transfer system, this year so far, is not working at all.

The above two issues I have are making me wonder...are the domains that have been set for AN Fast Transfer even getting listed across all the platforms where they should be listed?

3) Also, lately I am not always getting the Price Requested on your AfternicDLS Domain emails / notifications - I login to my AN account and notice a few day old price request on a domain.

Just sold another fast-transfer enabled name that didn't auto fast transfer upon sale.

I should add one thing though: I get paid WAY faster for domains I manually transfer. So because of that I am not bothered by having to manual transfer sold domains.

However, my concern is that most domains these days effectively seem to function as manual transfer domains, even though they are fast transfer enabled. I suspect that they are also then only distributed through the standard transfer network of registrars, rather than the fast transfer premium network - if that is the case we lose out on a lot of eyeballs/leads/buyers as a result of this glitch.

Yes this is my concern too. I messaged Afternic support about my two domains that were Fast Transfer enabled but did not Fast Transfer upon sale, but they wrote back that - basically - after the fact they could not determine what might have been the issue.

Transfers can take weeks/months to complete. This is normal at Afternic.

Sometimes you transfer a name to their holding account and they are unaware/forget that they are holding the name in their account. Sometimes they forget to transfer a name to buyer. They haven't set up WHOIS email forwarding properly at certain registrars so if they forget to turn off WHOIS before initiating a transfer they don't receive the transfer confirmation email and this tends to delay transfers at certain registrars. They don't seem to have a system for monitoring delayed/failed transfer, and they generally seem to be in no hurry to complete transfers, so if you want them to complete transfers faster you sometimes have to monitor and notify them with transfer guidelines (i.e. remind them to unlock/remove privacy/tell them ways to get around transfer locks/notify them that the domain is not being transferred etc.) along the way in order to get a transfer completed within a reasonable time frame. They often won't respond/act upon it the first time you contact them, but if you contact them several times they usually take action. Personally I rarely bother doing this anymore and just let the weeks/months pass by and let them complete the transfers/payouts at their own pace...

Another common scenario is that a domain may be transfer locked and the buyer prefers to wait for the transfer lock to end and take the name at another registrar.

Keep in mind that even if the domain status changes to transfer complete it does not necessarily mean that you can get paid. Sometimes they will mark the domain as transfer completed once they have taken control of it in a holding account. Other times they won't do this until the domain is in the hands of the buyer. But regardless what the status says, they generally won't trigger the payout until the domain is with the buyer.

It is not uncommon at all for Afternic transfers to face significant delays, and for payouts to be delayed after that. Just be patient and the sale will eventually complete. I have never had a sale fail at Afternic after the payment was secured.

Today's Afternic sale DID Fast Transfer away from my DynaDot automatically.

If you have a name listed at Afternic and have fast transfer enabled and the domain expires, what happens if a person BINs it after it's expired? Does it still transfer automatically or what?

Reason I ask here is because I am not sure if there is still an ongoing bug with the FT part of the deal.

At all registrars where I've used fast-transfer domains are automatically opted out upon expiry.

For a 2nd day in a raw, Godaddys ssl-selling bot is sending me domain verification requests for one particular domain I have @ afternic. I did not purchase ssl cert on GoDaddy for this domain. So it must be a genuine error made by somebody who is trying to purchase ssl for a similar domain but unable to type it in correctly.

GD did nothing wrong here - the system is supposed to verify domain ownership and it is what I see.

The questions are:

- Is GoDaddy system programmed to show an option to purchase this premium afternic-listed domain at the time somebody is trying to obtain ssl cert for it? It is clear that such a config would be illogical, as only real domain owners are supposed to purchase ssl certs, but in this particular case it would be OK. Moreover, due to ssl certs becoming more and more popular, this case must not be isolated one

- Is the support of SSL sales trained to check what happens after they receive a request from the buyer to verify why their purchase did not come through, which should happen earlier or later? In particular, are they supposed to recommend the buyer to purchase this premium afternic-listed domain to begin with, explain the price and the whole process, etc?

No and No. :) If someone is buying one they don't own the domain to they are typing the domain in manually, incorrectly in most cases. There are all different types of ssl certificates with varying amounts of verification which is needed to be done to issue a certificate. We don't really have any fool proof way of knowing if you are associated with the domain at the time you purchase the ssl. It could have privacy on the whois, it may be a web developer buying an ssl for a customer who owns the domain but the buyer/web developer wouldn't match the whois, it may be an employee of a company buying the cert for their domain but they do not own the domain etc etc. Part of the verification process is making sure the domain owner indeed signed up to have this ssl for their domain. That is where we figure out if the buyer should be able to add the ssl or not to the domain. Until then we don't know for certain if they have legitimate reason to buy the ssl or not for that domain, and even many people who do have legitimate ability to approve the ssl do not do so for various reasons. So I don't think this is something we could do differently than we do now. Long story short, if someone buys an ssl for a domain you own we don't know if they should be buying it or not until we ask you via that email or another means.

Just had a domain I sold more than 3 weeks ago, where payment was verified, and domain handed over to Afternic, cancelled (and the domain was transferred back to me). Apparently the payment was verified and then somehow unverified weeks later (how is that possible?). Strange how there are so many Afternic payment issues compared with all other marketplace platforms. I've had a number of payments/sales fail at Afternic. Never had this happen anywhere else.

Also, after Afternic rejects the payment, I've often gone on to sell those domains elsewhere to the same buyer (where they used the same payment method as Afternic rejected). Might be an idea to loosen up a bit on the payment verification to stop rejecting good payments.

Also had a broker sell a domain of mine below BIN without asking me if I agreed to it, and there was no floor giving such permission... (lack of/poor communication continues to be a problem with certain brokers and partner sales staff).

I've also accepted offers only to have them counter offer and try to ask for more from buyer. I think when we say we accept an offer, Afternic should not counter offer, they should accept. I've accepted offers that ended up not closing, seemingly because the broker/sales tried to bring the buyer to a higher price.

Fast transfer opt in emails are extremely delayed or don't show up at all anymore. Fast transfer domains still do not fast transfer all the time. I have reached out to some registrars, and they responded that the problem is fully on Afternic's side.

A buyer who bought a domain from me recently was extremely frustrated with Afternic, and described the process as "painful" and sent me a number of emails to complain about the experience of buying an Afternic listed domain... Buying a domain should not be a painful experience.

Some TA agents still ignore messages/don't reply, event though domains get stuck in the transfer process for no apparent reason. The Transaction Assurance system remains inferior to the old system it replaced, where the escrow agents were efficient and responsive.

We can still only display 50 domains at a time on Afternic.com, even though an increase of this limit has been requested ad infinitum in this thread. It's a small thing that would be greatly appreciated by the Afternic user base. I don't understand why its never done.

The account summary is still broken - has been for nearly a year now.

I am still being sent to an error page where I'm told to click on a link in an email to verify my account every single day. There is never any such email in my inbox.

Would be awesome to see some major fixes/updates/improvements to the Afternic platform system.

On the plus side, Afternic's network of registrars is performing really well, bringing in lots of leads and sales. I am thankful for Afternic's great performance in this area (the most important one for a domain sales platform).

ignore it. Not much you can do. Anyone can ask for an ssl on any domain at pretty much any ssl provider. No one knows if you are wanting the ssl or not except you. That is why they ask the WHOIS contact.

Not sure why a payment would be verified and then unverified a couple weeks later unless there was a charge back or something similar. You can ask your account rep to look into it.

The new TA and old system are the exact same people working on it in the back end with the exception of two things. We hired an additional head and we also recently routed some of the emails to the [email protected] team instead as they can answer faster than the TA team.

You can ask service@afternic about the email you are not getting and they can troubleshoot it.

We are probably not going to do much more to the Afternic interface in the coming year. We had some plans to work on it but other priorities have come up so it is unlikely that you will see any changes this year.

We have released a new version (in Beta) for domains registered at GoDaddy. You can manage your Afternic listings there in bulk more than 50 domains. You can also see more info there and more is coming so you can get the things there that people have been asking for usability wise at AN. If it works fine then we will give the other registrars help in using a similar system so you can see the listings and manage them in your preferred registrar.

Why am I not surprised. We were committed (by you) several changes over the course of this thread. I understand priorities change. But critical requests, a lot of which are bug fixes, are again being deprioritized despite constant requests by your users!

Received an email from [email protected]

"A payment to you was processed by Wire Transfer."

I am not sure which company sent this email, but I think it's AfterNic as I am waiting for proceeds of 2 sales at AfterNic. Please assist.

Thanks.

I can't believe a company would actually take such a position.

It's just early 2018, Afternic is absolutely littered with bugs and errors and the whole platform is severely outdated. This thread about problems and bugs at Afternic have nearly 600 posts for a reason! And you've already decided that not improvements whatsoever are going to be made for the rest of the year? It just doesn't make any sense... And it's really disappointing as an Afternic user.

Why can't you give people what they want usability wise at Afternic at Afternic? If you do that at Afternic, EVERYONE benefits immediately.

If you make some changes at GoDaddy, only some users benefit. And those using Dyna Dot, Name, Name Silo, Uniregistry, NameCheap, etc. do not benefit, and need to keep struggling with the Afternic platform. I do not keep my domain portfolio at GoDaddy, and among the domain investors I talk to, the majority do not either.

Besides, I don't want to manage my Afternic listings at separate registrars. I want to manage everything in once centralized functional location.

How hard it is to change the 50 domains per page layout to 500 or 1000 per page?

Domain industry companies with far less $ and manpower manage to stay on top of bugs and issues, and maintain their platforms up to date.

I don't understand how a behemoth like Afternic that is raking in the commissions and is owned by the largest registrar in the world is running like a soon to go bankrupt business where nothing is working smoothly and nobody cares anymore. I just don't see what they stand to gain by ignoring user requests for bug fixes and improvements.

It would require such a small amount relatively to how much they make in commissions to fix up the platform and bring various features up to present (or at least get the them to work properly). Afternic should provide users with a state of the art platform for managing sales, and they are in a position where they can easily accomplish this if they just want to.

I thought with the recent push of the Afternic platform capabilities at NamesCon that we'd actually see some improvements over at Afternic. Really disappointing to learn that a conscious decision has been made to not fix or improve the Afternic platform for the remainder of 2018...
