not too familiar with afternic fast transfer... but this smells more than just an accidental error.. more like fraud attempt.

@Joe Styler

I got an email today from gd/afternic saying to click here to authorize fast transfer

problem is.. that domain is not even in my afternic account. but it is mine.

so.. am I to understand anyone out there can go to their afternic accnt.. add my domain to their account.. set bin price for it... and then the real owner gets the authorize transfer email????

if that is true. then it certainly needs fixing.. otherwise.. it creates situation where the person who does this may be trying to fraudulently buy this domain at some low bin price he sets.. say $100.. and I accidentally approve that email and bin price.. then he buys it.. of course, transaction may not complete.. and fraud discovered.. but still it creates many hassles..

and if per chance he won't be able to buy it for $100.. cause its in "his account" then he can always get a friend to do it for him I guess.

thoughts?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I can confirm Afternic allows ANYONE to submit your domains and claim them as their own with zero verification. I've uncovered several users that belong to this forum actively pricing tens of thousands of domains on behalf of other owners, then having them listed on every distribution partner with exorbitant BIN prices hoping someone buys a name for $18,000. Then they approach the actual owner with a $5,000 offer hoping they sell, pocketing the rest of the profit.

This has been brought to their attention, privately at first, and multiple times publicly. The fix is simply removing the domains you can prove are yours and leaving the other thousands of names in that person's account. Any email that comes from Afternic/Godaddy should be analyzed carefully, especially if it's an anonymous offer from Godaddy's buying service.

what a disgrace.

perhps @Joe Styler will be kind enough to comment hwo many private and public reports it will take before these holes are fixed and those who try to fraud are stopped.

one would think one fraud report would be enough... but when 100 same stories are written and no action taken, then what exactly does that say abotu afternic?

It could happen which is why we include the price on the email. We think that will raise some red flags that maybe you don't want to sell your domain for $100 and you will not click it to approve and instead let us know that someone is up to something suspicious. We do have fraud checks in place as you state and also are improving ways to check ownership in the coming months. But I think the smartest thing to do would be to not approve it if you see something suspicious. That is why we ask the owner of the domain if they are trying to sell it at that price with us via email. We don't know if the person listing the domain should be or not because it may be someone like you who knows about domains legitimately helping a friend who doesnt know much about domain sales to sell their domain or your afternic account may not have the same info as your whois. A lot of people do this. Their whois may be some form of - domain admin or this domain for sale and a po box and generic email and your Aftenic account or registrar contact info may be your real name and home address because thats what the bank uses and you need to have your credit card payments clear and they dont know your po box as a billing address or your bank as a payment address or you dont want poeple finding your real home info on the WHOIS or a myriad of other legitimate reasons. So we ask the whois owner via the registrar, Are you really trying to sell this domain at this price? If it's not ok say no.

Sure it comes in the previous email. We send one from Afternic that says youre going to get an opt in from your registrar for this name/names at this price/prices. That email you have shows the Second email that comes from your registrar. They make up the content for that email not us. Sure this is GoDaddy so it "us" but it's not Afternic and your opt in comes from where ever the domain is registered so it could be coming from any number of other companies with emails and systems we have no control over, thus the price comes in the First email that is sent by Afternic saying you listed your domain at this price and you are going to get an opt in email from your registrar.
