The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Basically bumps up the thread to the top to increase viewers

Hello NoBS,

That is a great question!
Lets see if we can clear that up for you.

DM stands for Direct Message which is what the messaging system in XenForo (the software we use here at NamePros) is called.
PM stands for Private Message or Personal Message and that is what the messaging system is called on vBulletin and many other forum software programs.

Because vB (and others) preceded XF many members still use "PM" out of habit.
We prefer (but don't enforce) the members to use the DM abbreviation since that is the name of the system used here.

What they are referencing when they use the abbreviations is that they have sent the OP a message with their submissions instead of posting them in the thread.

Google "xenforo vs vbulletin" and you will find more, interesting information.

I hope that helps.

Peace,
Kenny

I have a feeling NoBS may not have been asking about what the terms mean, and instead was making a commentary about this habit of forum threads getting flooded by duplicates of "pm/dm sent" (when the OP gets a notification either way)?

We allow this to benefit sellers (And buyers). It helps bump/pull the most interesting and sought after Request threads to the top for sellers to check out. It also helps the sellers nudge the buyer to respond to their DM. It even helps the buyer by getting their request thread more exposure. Overall, it's a positive thing.

If you rather see the Requests from newest to older (ignoring bumps), you can sort the section that way using this link:
That link is in the menu bar named "New Requests" underneath "Home News ..."

Hope that helps,

It seems quite dumb a question, but shouldn't we have a criteria for requesting domains? I mean i see buyers with no reviews asking for domains and having the 'courtesy' of not replying and being upfront that ' they don't reply since they are not interested'.

I don't think I have seen a single thread where the buyer said, 'Hey, I bought this domain from this seller in my request thread'. They just say,' bought some, looking for more'. Who is there to verify that they actually bought something?'..

Just some suggestions:
1. Buyer needs to mention what domain he bought and from whom, in his request thread.
2. Buyer should have certain qualified parameters before putting on a request thread. (x amount of trade reviews / registered for minimum xx months etc..)
3. Buyers should reply to PMs/DMs. If a seller is trying to give you options for the domains you want, it's your obligation to at least reply to their messages.

Not sure if everyone is going to agree on this, but I feel we should have some rules in place :glasses:

I don't think buyers would want to do this: it would be more work for them and it would publicize their purchases and the ballpark price of those purchases, which reseller typically don't want when trying to resell domains for multiples more. There wouldn't be enough benefit to this for us to justify enforcing it.

Buyer should have certain qualified parameters before putting on a request thread. (x amount of trade reviews / registered for minimum xx months etc..)
Sellers can decide this on their own, for instance, if they want to ignore threads from new members. We can look into an easier way to filter the results based on criteria if there's enough interest in that.

Buyers should reply to PMs/DMs. If a seller is trying to give you options for the domains you want, it's your obligation to at least reply to their messages.
There have been a lot of threads on this. There are passionate advocates on both sides of the argument. There isn't enough of a consensus one way or another for us to create a rule about it.

Hope that helps,
