If a domain is going to expire in 30 days, until when is it possible to initiate the transfer to another registrar?
And can a domain be transfered after it has expired?

Thank you.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I suspect it depends on the registrar, but most allow the name to be transferred during the expiry period. However, some may block this if they have sold the name during it's expiry. I have know names to be removed from your listing in the hope that you don't notice that it has expired.

you need to be more specific about what your concerns are. Transferring away from which Registrar and which TLD?

I do think it is important to mention that the TLD does matter, as some Registries don't have any post expiration grace period or don't allow transfers after expiration. Though for your GTLDs you should be able to transfer up until expiration and for many Registrars, even transfer for some time after expiration.

That's why I asked @Ronny Rubinstein, to be more specific about the TLD and Registrar. Ronny, where are you?

Seems like @Ronny Rubinstein isn't interested in clarifying his original question :( This is way to broad a question to answer clearly without knowing the Registrar and TLD because most Registrars/TLDs have different terms.

Icann rules specify that a registrar cant block the transfer of a name even after its expired. As long as it hasnt entered the pending delete phase

But not all Registrars comply with ICANN's Rules. In fact, I'd say, most don't 100%. Which is why we need to know the Registrar and TLD in order to give any kind of guidance.

all commonly used registrars allow transfers past expiry date.. average being up to 30 days past expiry... whether its dotster ... godaddy.. nmeccheap.. name.. and more.

some do not let you get auth code after expiry manually, in which case you email their support and they do it for you.

it is an icann rule to let you do it... . and if some want to not obey it, you can call icann and they'll intervene on your behalf... if you request code and do not get it within 5 days.

this is for the common extensions.. org/net/com.... ngtlds could have other rules... not sure

And can a domain be transfered after it has expired?
1) you can initiate the transfer to another registrar before the domain has expired, its better like 2 weeks before, because the transfer usually takes 1 week.
2) The answer is no.

I do alot of transfers to enom on a monthly basis and the transfer is usually complete within a couple of hours.

The registrars that take a week are just useless

how can #2 be no when I have transfered 100s of expired domains
from around 10 different registrars :)

I don't really get the reason for this thread. It is so generally worded, that it can apply to any and all Registrars and TLD's in the world. Which is why you see these varying, sometimes clashing, viewpoints. ICANN have set the rules for most Registrars and TLD's under which they should be operating. But the problem is both Registrars and TLD's only take these as guidelines, and/or interpret them as they see fit. Leading up to the point their are multiple answers to these questions. For example

Lets take just .COM domains registered at GoDaddy. This is subject to GoDaddy Domain Name Transfer Agreement, https://godaddy.com/agreements/showdoc.aspxpageid=TRANSFER_SA&isc=dnabb510
There seems to be a lot up to the discretion of the registrar in this agreement. And this was posted in GoDaddy Community Forum https://ph.godaddy.com/help/what-happens-after-domain-names-expire-6700
Which says (between the lines), that you can transfer out a domain up to Day 30 after expiry. (you don't get charged the redemption fee on day 19 because you are not renewing the domain at GoDaddy)

So the short answer to this example is you can transfer out .com domains at GoDaddy up to 30 days after expiry.

That shows the exact answer to the question of a transferring a .COM domain away from GoDaddy. But that is just GoDaddy and several TLD's like .com, .net, .org, and others, most but not all. However most ccTLD's have zero grace period, and cannot be transferred after expiry. Again, most but not all. The list of exceptions are too many to go into detail. ie: some Registrars require you to renew expired domains before allowing transfers. The list of exceptions goes on and on.

Which is why it is impossible to answer such an open ended question with any kind of accuracy. So please take any reply received in the thread with a pinch of salt, @Ronny Rubinstein. It might not apply to any case you might have in mind. And there is no generic answer to this open ended question.

Could someone explain to me how I can transfer out a domain I unlocked from Godaddy? It expired on 3 Feb. I have the transfer code, but Godaddy have taken control of the domain and made the whois private so the transfer fails.

I've tried with support, who say they can only unlock the domain if I pay them $80.

Perhaps @Joe Styler from GoDaddy can answer this question best. I'm a bit foggy about how it works since they changed their ToS that you lose control of the domain on day 31.

Just go to your expired domains list and select the domain and click "email authorization". That will change the whois back to your info so you can transfer it.

Thanks. This resolved it.

I have to say it's really shocking how bad GoDaddy are at holding customers to ransom over things like this.

Despite unlocking the domain, GoDaddy relocked it as soon as they sent out the $80 redemption fee email. Their support claimed it was impossible to unlock the domain again and transfer it out, without paying the $80 fee.

GoDaddy support can give you an answer to any question which is 100% opposite of how something happens. Does it happen all the time? No. But if it happens to you. And you believe what you are being told by support, then how do you get something resolved correctly? This is why NPs support is crucial as a place where you can double check what you are being told by GoDaddy Support.
