discuss Which extension if .com isn't available?

another NamePro's member posed this question, and I thought I'd bring it to the domain extension thread for discussion. This was my response, and I'd like to ask other domainers "if" I'm on the right track?

Like the answer to most things in life, "it depends". I've started and owned a lot of businesses over the years, and I've discovered many of the new nTLD's can be a perfect fit for some where the .com isn't available. Take for example, I started a business in the 90's called Contact USA, and I owned the domain ContactUSA.com. At one time the business had a couple hundred employees, but it eventually folded. Sadly I didn't hold on to the name because someone else owns it today? When you attempt to access it, all you get is an American Flag and nothing else on your screen. So learning about nTLD's like I have, the name ContactUSA.today would be a perfect fit. How so you might ask? The extension .today represents the here and now, and .com really doesn't represent anything. I compare some of the nTLD's like putting an emoji at the end of a sentence instead of a period

I've hand registered over 500 nTLD's based on my experience in the business world and in life. It sort of comes naturally to me, but then again my name is Bulloney

.NET / .ORG (if it fits) or relevant country codes.

The reality though is even with a low budget you can still handreg a usable .COM, even if it doesn't have re-sale value.

I use .NET or .ORG. mostly,, but here lately its been .ORG more than others. The current names I have been registering are more catered towards end users with non-profit status and therefore .ORG suits them the best... And at the end of the day, "It all depends"....

The question is to broad. To really determine which is the right extension you would need to know what type of business you are starting. If it's a tech startup you could go with a .co or possibly a .io. If its a mom and pop shop you could use a .net or .us since leaking traffic doesn't matter much. If its a business targeting the younger generation you could use a new gtld since most of them will understand what the hell that dot in between the words actually means. So many variables go into choosing the right extension if you can't get the .com

.com = commercial, community, commerce, company, computer, commons

.net are a great primary domain if your a network provider e.g. ISP, or as a secondary use for nameservers and content delivery (CDN). You would still want the .com too.

.org is better than .com for anything non-commercial

.co is ok as a primary url if you also own the .com.

Country code (cc) tlds are better than .com within many countries like Germany, Australia, UK.

I also like .tv, .io, and I'm warming up to a few others, but ultimately if you can get the .com or .org you should.

Just my opinion obviously.

Without a doubt my first choice would be "relevant country code" unless I was doing business outside of my home country.

A lot of my thought process in registering nTLD's does involve youth. Most youth livefor .today or should that be live4 .today, lol! My overall marketing strategy involves getting nTLD's in front of high school and college students like FreePizza.today With successful reverse engineering, the likes of Dominoes or Papa Johns will be fighting over my domains

The high school and college kids are just as familiar with .COM as everyone else.

First of all you need to convince people to care about domains in general before you can convince them about new extensions. The vast majority of people just don't care about domains.

The .com is $1,218 at Afternic with $675 min offer. You could also negotiate the price down on the longer .com down to half that or less.

So why would I pay $500+ for a .com domain when my real niche is nTLD's and gTLD's, and I'm using it myself to sell domains to end users? Makes absolutely no sense

Plus, I paid a whopping 8.49 for the .co. You don't know me do you

I will say at least I agree with your practice what you preach comment.

I see a lot of people selling new extensions; pushing the benefits of them while using a .COM. That does seem rather counter-intuitive to do that.

Even most of the registries, registrars, etc. that push them use .COM.

Not bad...at least you're thinking outside the box. However, NameMyBiz.co has 33 and 1/3 fewer characters, and I may even start a "name" business. I like "Name My Biz" better than "Naming Startups", not bad though. Thanks for your input.

btw, i just reg'd the name NameBiz.co because it's even shorter, so now I have some options with regards to my businesses name. DomainImaginaton.com via Efty will be my main site where all my domains will be for sale, but NameBiz.co will be my custom naming site for private customers. Thanks again.

It is not a hand reg. I won it at expired name auction. Meaning you can still keep looking and find nice gems.

So If I'm in the business of helping people name businesses and domains, how does RightBrand.com even relate to NameMyBiz?...i don't think it does. It doesn't even have "name" in the name?
