So I know this is going to start another heated discussion where people think I'm trying to stifle Free Speech .. so I just ask that you read open mindedly until the end so you'll understand that isn't the case at all. I'm actually a staunch supporter of Free Speech. Anyhow .. to the point ...

Late last night / early this morning as I was going through domains making my daily list of names to watch, I noticed "NudeKids.com" on auction at GoDaddy with one bid. In the past I have reported domains on their platform like GasTheJews.com and KKK.info as well as a few other clearly racist/inappropriate domains. So after getting most of my list done, as I've done in the past, I simply sent an email around 9am informing them of the domain NudeKids.com.

Hello,

Just wanted to let you know that NudeKids.com is on auction on the GoDaddy Platform today .. which means it’s been listed for a week and a half.

https://auctions.godaddy.com/trpItemListing.aspx?miid=247522700

Thanks,

I checked every now and then, but sure enough it was still there .. and it got more bids and finally ended at 1:36pm (10:36am in Arizona) at $134 after a relatively short battle between 2 bidders. The last time I checked there were only a few seconds left in the auction.

Then .. literally within 2 minutes of the auction ending at 10:38am Arizona time I received the following email:

Support Staff Response

Thank you for contacting Aftermarket support. We appreciate your feedback. That listing now closed.

Please reach out to us if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Aftermarket Support

I'd go into details on my thoughts on this .. but I think my response is rather clear on my opinions ...

Hello,

It’s (the auction listing) no longer there because the auction ended literally 2 minutes before you sent me this email. Unless you closed it with literally under 5 seconds to go, the auction was not closed, it completed uninterrupted, with a winning bid of $134.

It doesn’t affect me directly .. and I’m also an extremely strong believer in freedom of speech. However .. I’m also a believer in freedom of choice .. and that your choices determine and show your values ... I do realise it can be difficult to catch all such names, even if in all honesty you should indeed be responsible for everything you sell on your platform. But I did notify you several hours ago, and thus, in my eyes GoDaddy chose to profit on a domain that will likely end up being used for child pornography.

Not much more to say .. you guys have the largest selection of expiring domains so I’m not going to start some big boycott! I just find it a little sad. More importantly I also find it personally distasteful that you sidestepped the issue by telling me it’s closed in a way that if I were not paying attention would leave me to believe that GoDaddy took progressive action to actually remove the auction .. the choice of open ended / deceptive language is a surprise .. as despite the numerous bugs and issues I face using the GD platform on a frightfully regular basis .. I never doubted the good intentions of GD to do the right thing if they could, nor the integrity of individuals working at GD. Today is an unfortunate exception.

That's it .. figured it's something to be shared as I'm sure these sort of issues are important to many of you ... be it the lack of action .. or the ambiguous sidestepping response. Because if I got a reply in 2 days stating that they were sorry they missed it, I probably would only have been half as frustrated and just would have forgotten about it.

Even sadder .. are the actual stats behind the domain ...

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Its a Trap, the FBI is looking to catch some pedophiles! All the bidders will get investigated by the Interpol, so far 15 bidders fall for the trap.
The winner will get the domain plus 100 years in prison as a Bonus! lol :xf.grin::-D:laugh:

I fully agree with you. I think it's shameful that they let a domain like this sell, particularly when they've been notified of its existence.

Some names have gray areas, but I can't see one here. I really can't imagine a possible positive use for this.

I think it shows you where GoDaddy's heart really lies. IMHO. Although I wasn't as offended by it personally. But it has way more chances of it being used for nefarious purposes than being used for any legitimate purposes.

Wow, this is sick. Shame on GoDaddy.

Obviously this is a far out scenerio and I know your heart is in the right place @Ategy.com, and I am in no way in favor of child pornography, but sometimes there are gray areas in circumstances like these. I also remember GoDaddy reps replying here that they can't monitor the millions of domains flowing through their system and have to rely on people like you to inform them about sketchy domain names, but maybe they truly didn't get to your report until the domain auction was closed, especially since sometimes it takes them months to list Domains on Afternic after submission. Not exactly the most nimble of companies!

The thing that nobody has talked about, but who are the two dumb fucks that actually bid on the name. Should be banned for life from gd auctions and thrown in jail. Seriously.

Excellent follow up email! More power to you. Keep doing the right thing man.

GoDaddy values the name at $1769 so it's possible one or both of the bidders were bots, as some bots are set up to bid on domains which GoDaddy indicates have value. Based on what's going on at GD these days I assume HugeDomains was one of the bidders.

We would have taken it down if we had noticed it in time. We do have checks in place to remove listings that are offensive or trademarks. We have about 14 million domains on the auction at any given time and unfortunately sometimes names slip through our various checks.
Looking internally at the timestamps of the auction end and the email reply to @Ategy.com the auction was already ended by time he replied which is what he is saying in that email. The listing ended. You wrote in to us a 7:28:48 am AZ time. He replied at 11:38:18 am and the auction ended at 11:36 am.
Thanks for reaching out to us. We would have removed the listing had we noticed in time as we have with all of the other listings you left on the email thread to us in the past.

Yes I'm fully aware of the timing .. I did include the times (literally +/- 18 seconds) in my original message above. I just found it strange that in under 2 minutes the situation was: 1) Looked into, 2) Addressed, as well as 3) Replied to. AND .. that the entirety of those 2 minutes were exactly the same 2 minutes between the auction ending and my receiving the reply.

I think maybe what might not be clear about part of my concern .. is that the "end time" of the auction isn't even relevant .. which is why I was taken a back by the use of the term "closed" as meaning the "case is closed" so to speak. Because regardless of when the auction ended .. the domain and/or transaction is still in the GD system for days .. and GoDaddy is still selling the domain at profit. It just seemed to me taking care of everything involved in cancelling the transaction plus writing me back would have taken a more than 2 minutes?

If the agent did indeed get my email at exactly the same moment then auction ended and then took care of the situation as well as replied to me all within that exact 2 minute window specifically between 11:36 and 11:38, then please pass on my apologies to him .. possibly recommend that in the future to be a little more detailed in his reply and actually saying the auction was "cancelled", so that there is less room for us as clients to think the issue was simply conveniently sidestepped.

Thanks

N i g g e r Advocate.com .net and .org on auction today (I reported one of them .. just noticed the other two).
[Note: I'm assuming that since the term is being used in a clinical discussion it's ok that I go around the autosensor and state the N word in question is N I G G E R .. kinda ironic that the NP filter caught it, yet the billion dollar giant's didn't]

@Paul Nicks and @Joe Styler .. I fully appreciate the fact catching 100% of names is an extreme challenge .. but how can your filter not contain the word "*****r"?

Does GD have a basic filter of words to mark potential domains to be verified by a human? Because while I understand that having a human go through the entirety of all GD auction domains (error free) would be an extreme challenge .. I'd think 3 versions of the same domain that begins with the word N i g g e r is something that in all honesty should have easily been caught even with the most basic filter+human combo in place.

How is it that you have time to find all these offensive names? Maybe there is something you can share as to how you find them?

Of course they have a filter. It's called the complaint/report filter. When a domain offends someone and someone complains about it and reports it, they will take a look at it. I provided an example above of what a gray area this could be in the way of censorship to block names using an automated filter!

Using the excellent Godaddy search feature saves a lot of time.

Joe .. seriously .. NP filter caught it very easily ... I go through the lists myself .. maybe about 5000 names per day's worth of auctions .. so in theory I find under 10% of such names .. probably even less given my specific searches .. the only time I sometimes specifically search for them is if I find one, then I'll see if alternate extensions are also there before reporting.
[ADDED: There are also many borderline cases I don't report .. and sometimes quite frankly I'm too busy .. but I do try to do my part voluntarily when I can]

GD already does have an adult filter. In all honesty I have no issues with adult names .. I have no issues with swear words .. I have no issues with vulgarity (even if I don't swear much myself .. unless I stub my toe on something or step on one of my dog's bones going to the washroom at night). It's the specifically derogatory terms, child porn and specific calls to action (like GasTheJews.com from a while back) that are the only cases I have issue with.

I know it can be tedious, and it can be a pain in the butt going through the names. But if GD is going to auction them and keep 100% of the profits, then at some point along the process (not sure where exactly legally speaking) GoDaddy does indeed own these domains. As such there should be at least some minimum level of corporate responsibility.

@DNWon .. This isn't a debate over whether the domains should exist or not (a very different debate) see some of my older discussion for more insight on that). This is a discussion on whether a company (I spend 5 figures a year at) profits from domains that have extreme to absolute possibilities of being used for hate speach/crimes. I've talked to many people at various levels at GD .. there is no doubt in my mind that GD don't want such domains there. Nobody there are racists with some sort of hidden secret agenda (or at least the vast majority aren't). It's just that possibly nobody wants to take the time to create/implement a better solution ... particularly since it would likely include adding a few person-hours to the payroll each week. A classic case of one department thinking another department should take care of it and vice versa .. which leads to nobody taking responsibility. It's not just a GoDaddy thing ... this type of thing happens in all big companies and government institutions.

I was wondering how you found them in case it would be helpful for us to use. Using lists is what we have in place and we pull words from filters we set up automatically. Manually checking the names is very time consuming which is why I was wondering your way of finding them.

I beleive an existent gd filter was originally set to filter out well-known trademarks (and other terms like mentioned in this thread may therefore have less coverage, so there is a space to improve filtering). Possibly because selling a trademarked domain on auction might open all sorts of legal cases (gd was profiting from apple - microsoft - etc. tm). The reason of such a finding is that I frequently see tm domains being pre-ordered an subsequently auctioned on DropCatch with >1 bidders, and the domain history shows they were dropped from GD family of registrars. I asked myself why the same bidders did not acquire these questionable domains on GD pre-release auctions, checked appropriate historical lists of what was offered on gd auctions and found that the domains in question were simply not there (never offered). Which means that GD legal team is doing their job correctly...
