I think like most speculations it is/can be addictive, and we all, for our own financial and emotional health, need to watch that.

There are definitely a lot of similarities to gambling although the big difference is that if you put in enough research and spend enough time looking for the right names you can beat the house. Gambling outcomes are ultimately out of your control but buying the right domains isn't.

also if you are experienced you more likely not to buy domains which are pretty much just plain bad, so even on your worst day, you will get your lets say registration fees back by selling it here.

to buy a domain for 100$ hoping to sell it for 110$ or even 150$ it is quiet easy and you can do it like any shop or product sellers anywhere .. hard job but little or no risk

but to buy a domain for 100$ hoping to sell it for 50,000$ is a dream and pure gamble

and people are using different strategy to buy lottery tickets and the same apply here in domaining
buying thousands cheap tickets for 100$ each
or buying two or three expensive tickets for 5000$ each

the only difference with gambling is that you can return part or most of the money you used to buy the tickets

the more expensive the domain is , the more gambling risk you are taking but the returns can be of course winning the lottery $$$$$
