I am setting up a new hosting company and am doing some market research, what I want to know is what do you, webmaster want from a hosting package, how much space, bandwidth and add-on domains. this is the sort stuff I want to know. also how much would you pay for a hosting package. Also should I do tailor made hosting packages?

Some idea I had was to offer unlimited everything for $49.99 per month is this right should I put the price up?

Tell me what you think.

You can't offer unlimited everything. That doesn't exist. And I don't even look any host with a such offer...

Sorry but no, you can't provide unlimited space or unlimited bandwith. Or if you can, I need some terabytes diskspace and bandwith to do a webarchive clone ;)

Continue to doing some market research, read webmaster and hosting forums, and you'll see what people think about "unlimiter hosting"..

Thanks,
David.

Good one Dan.

And what people as starter need is :
Space : Reasonable Say: 500mb to 1 Gb
Bw Around 5Gb to 10Gb
Sql and other Stuff Atleast 5 to 10. (subdomain, parked domains and ftp )
A 100mbit Fast Server.
What i think people will offer for this is around 1$ per month without any hesitation

If a Power User exists they would look for :
Space: 2 to 3 Gb
Bw Around 30 to 60 Gb
Sql and other Stuff 20 - 40
A 100mbit fast server

What people can probably pay is around 10$ per month without any hesitation.

For Extreme User:
Space 8 - 12 Gb
Bw 120-160Gb
Sql other Stuff -100
A 100mbit FAst SErver
SSH Access
What people can probably pay is around 20-25$ per month with no hesitation.

And ofcourse most of them need a Toll Free phone line cause some dont like only email and live online support and it degrades the hosting companies image.

And ofcourse the Server needs to be linux for SSH and Have Stable OS choice of which is to be decided by U. Giving MSN and other messenger id doesnt help a lot and most of them refrain from making payments via some address or paypal only so if various means of payment are avialble it makes the hosting company look legitimate . Hope this will help u in ur new company.

Why and how can i suggest such things?
Cause i had been with many free hosting companies and i know what kinda package a person needs and what kinda support a company should offer. I even had a Reseller account for Free but the support of that company sucked .
So support needs to be excellent also.

And ur offering 1 TB of Space for 50$ is not practical and doesnt look and reflect nice on hosting as customers will think ur overselling and would run away with their money. So keep the limits to practical and unlimited just make s the customer think 10 times about making payement.

hope all this crap i wrote helps and if i made lots of spelling and grammer mistakes than dont mind them as its 6 am here and i need to go to bed now. :bah:

Yes u can include a custom package also but u will need to fix prices for each addon that u will give to the user say for extra Disk space of 1gb u will charge 1 $ or 2 $ more per month and for BW and other stuff accordingly.
Custom Plans also help to drive more traffic cause than customers have flexibilty of deciding what to do with their money.

if u have time and resource to handle free hosting stuff than it would be good if around 50mb space and 500mb bw is offered. cause in 10 mb u cannot do much.

And to skip freehosting thing u could just give a 10 day free trial or some other promotion scheme.

Later now i go to bed

If your ideal customer is an experienced webmaster, I would stay away from "unlimited" because we know that doesn't exist :bah:

What I look for in a host is:

1) Reliability
2) Customer Support
3) Non-Overloaded Servers
4) Supports PHP/MySQL/Cgi
5) Value for the Money
6) Price

I would like to point to very important thing which u missed its the GD2 Enabled Cause most of the images and thumbnails rely on it and most people leave the present hosting if GD2 is not enabled so u must make sure Gd2 is on.

Remember to allow sessions usage on your servers or web developers will run from day one. :(

Some people don't just set their server configuration related to php, mysql correctly. You must consider these on top, I'm talking about settings related to using databases, max connections, sessions in php, etc. This really makes me run from 2 hosts straightforward.

Hi,
I think the main thing here is do you own the server? or are you renting or have you got a reseller package?. By what i have read here it seems like a hell of a lot of overselling is gonna take place and that isen't good for your customers what so ever nor your reputation. How much research have you done exactly? because you don't seem to have done much.

Thank you

Sin

That's ultimately your decision. You must find out if you can afford to do this and if you want to do this. Sites with the right traffic might get you a client or two but at the same time how much worth is a banner on a makeup site for instance going to bring in? Probably not much. It comes down here to if you want to help out or not. If someone's trying to make money from their site then personally I think they should have to invest a little. I'd also ask them to post a testimonial after theyve had reasonable experience with your service, but that's just an idea.

I think Sinfully makes some points - I see that you are trying to ask questions here but make sure that you know what you are doing before you jump into this. Being a host is serious business and it can get you into trouble if you don't do things the right way. I'm not trying to scare you or anything - just trying to let you know this isn't something you can jump into with no prior knowledge.

Danielle,

Custom plans are a nice option to offer serious hosting clients, just make sure you can 1) easily put together a package on your servers with their customizations 2) make it easy for them to add items to build a plan. It would be good to have a script that totals their items and gives them a quote. Offering custom plans could be a good way to gather feedback from your users. This type of info will let you know exactly what people want in their hosting plans.

I would recommend offering a range of plans as this makes it easier for potential clients to signup with a plan that fits them best. It should also be very easy for them to upgrade to another plan if they need more space, emails, features, etc.

Don't use "unlimited" in any marketing. A server does have a certain amount of space and you don't want any one client using the entire server and more, so don't promise it. Unless you own the network, there is a bandwidth limit for your server and you don't want any one client using it all, so don't promise it.

Thanks,
Anthony

I dont know about "unlimited" guys, but he gave me 60gb so i doubt that the HDD is 80 gb only, he might have a big hdd and might offer really huge spaces and using wrong term " unlimited" to point out that the hdd space is not a probelm, even so i doubt that anyone can even use 60 gb like he gave me ( so i asked to trim the hdd space to less than half of what he gave me) so , i repeat that "by unlimited he might mean really huge spaces" cause these days u can get really big hdd in the market. But yaa there is no such thing as unlimited and it doesnt look good . So danielle just instead of unlimited put something like 20 to 30 gb for the highest paid plan that is more than enough for anyone. But not for those who host porn and porn videos they need unlimited storage  . :notme: .

And to let u guys know, (i aint advertising), i have done speed test of download and upload they are not slow at all so this guy is on a fast line gettting around 10mbit/s for download and i know from expereince that those with 10mbit line give only 2 mbit/s downloads. So this guys seems really serious about hosting, so serious ideas would be really nice instead of critizing "unlimited" all the time i think he has got the point already. I dont know if he has the PHP with GD2 on it will do that test soon but he seems legit to me and not a "basement type of hosting company" .

And "Reignman" Trust me Unlimited Doesnt Exists if it does, can u than define Inifity for me? I would give u million dollar(if i ever had that much) if u can represent inifity in physical quantity or object. (practical)
