discuss Do startups prefer the .io to .com??

Many startups start with a .co or a .io or even a .xyz..... because they are bootstrapping, but will acquire the .com when they either:

a) Become profitable

or

b) Succeed in winning VC investment.

The .com was probably registered at the time, so they picked a .io. They are probably not aware the .com has been released.

yeah. they(.io) started 2015.
while the .com has been around n in use ..

Non serious and many spam 1 year website start with anything but serious and long term website start with .com or cctld. If cctld they will acquire .com later. Example cleartax.in they finally acquired cleartax.com @ $80000

Pendingdelete is bad, Dropcatcher generally catch most domains that are taken in .co or .io. you could have brought while in closeout.

At some point of time, I tried to analyse new tech startups. With some exceptions, many are just this:

1. Develop something that collects and processes private data from endusers (their sales leads, documents, communications etc)

2. Give them something back so endusers will knowingly share their private data

3. Register .io domain - all are doing this

4. Try to start your business in U.S. Silicon Valley assuming that there are a lot of investors waiting for you in that particular location just to give you money

No issues with dot IO, except that, by associating themselves with Indian Ocean Territory, _tech_ startups are showing lack of technical/IT professionalism. They will buy .com earlier or later, and especially if there is/was similar .com on aftermarket - the owner of forsale .com can only appreciate the fact that somebody made their domain more popular by developing the phrase in another extension

Agree! Why on earth wait until the name goes through the whole drop cycle, where if you're lucky you might get it through DropCatch (or others) for a $59 or $69 min bid, when you could scoop from the closeouts at $5?! Or have I missed something here?

I don't believe anyone would rather have a different extension from .com. If they do then they need to go back and study business 101. One does not leave a world famous address for the suburbs.

I think io co and whatever comes up are good subs when the .com is taken.
Maple.com is a good example where a startup paid so much for the domain that they ran out of funding.
That and the fact that they had about one of the worst business models ever conceived!!

If I start a new company of course I'm going to say.... ha ha got an io when I'm really jealous of the fact I did not get the .com.

Sounds like the domain is at GoDaddy. If you added the domain to your cart and were not signed in then the name likely got reserved and will become available again after a set amount of time. If you're shopping for GoDaddy closeouts always make sure you're logged in first so they stay in your actual cart.

I saw a fair amount of startups using .tech. at CES this year. And even CES is now using ces.tech as the main URL (replacing CESshow.com ? )

What are you trying to say?

Oracle owns CES.com. Not sure if it is for sale, or if it has/had an asking price.

I think it makes sense for CES to switch to an LLL, and really don't see why they would need to brand on a .com, given how well known they already are.

And .tech works because of the nature of the conference. CES is already legit, why would they need, what I assume would be an overpriced .com?

CESshow.com >> for sale @ HugeDomains for $2,395.

CES used to use CESweb.org. .Tech is more fitting for their cause than .ORG. (imo)

Something I find interesting, is CES wasn't always using @CES on twitter. Not sure what twitter handle CES was using in 2014, but a photographer (I think) by the name of Ces White used @Ces in early 2014 HERE

I think you are right - they used cesweb.org - and I could never remember that. So I am a data point that a clean non dot com is better than a longer name.

CES probably not for general public and they are trying to hide their company's direct access from general public.

CES stands for Consumer Electronics Show. It is produced by CTA (Consumer Technology Association) which uses CTA.TECH
